When I was a little girl in Louisiana, my mother showed me that those who had more had to take care of those who had less. One day we were downtown when she saw a man who obviously didn't have enough to eat. She stooped over to talk to him, then went into the nearby diner, and came back to the car. I asked "Mama, what did you say to that man? Why did you go to the restaurant?"She fixed her cat-eyed glasses on me and said, "That man told me he was hungry. So I told him I would give the owner of the diner $20 and he could go there until it was all gone." I know that she would like what the Clinic does for people.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

There is a mistaken perception that the only population served is Latino. My friend's daughter is 26 and needed a precancerous lesion removed. No health insurance but PHC helped her.

I don't see any changes needed. This clinic was started from nothing and has grown into a vibrant facility that serves the under insured and non insured of the tri-county area.

Why did you make your donation at this time?

Instead of donating to a wide range of charities, my husband and I decided to pick 4 local charities to support with larger donations. We wanted to see our donations make a difference to our community. We also wanted a charity that had low overhead, needed funding and used those funds wisely towards causes we cared about personally. Taking care of those who have less is a privilege given to those who have more.

In 2008 I was looking to volunteer some of my time to a community based organization that focused on caring for fellow community members. I was told about the PHC and after my consistent pestering of the people involved, I was finally asked to participate as a member of one of the PHC’s various committees. After being involved with the PHC for a number of months I realized what an honor it was to be involved with an organization like the PHC. I began to see the mission of the clinic clearly and realized it was closely related to many things that are very important to me personally, good health, caring for others, keeping families safe, and the making of a better community. I am so grateful to be involved with an organization that truly cares about people. I am honored to be on the board of the PHC and see that in tough times, our mission is even more critical to our community, and that the community is stepping up to help each other.

I have seen the organization not only fulfill its mission, but improve overall cost of patient visits, provide care to patients with chronic diseases, and diagnose serious illness all while keeping patients out of the emergency rooms. The clinic has also successfully brought lots of healthy babies into the world.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Continue to create awareness of and for the organizationa and work closely with other medical-type providers to round out healthcare for the uninsured.

There are many places I could practice my phlebotomy skills, but here I help people who really need it. It's often through lab tests that people learn why they have been feeling bad, and can receive the care to feel better again.

I love being in the lab when the Clinic is packed. In
between drawing blood I get pulled in to interpret for the doctors. The good days are the busiest days, so there are lots of good days at PHC.

I have seen the faces of the people that come into this clinic. Many of them are there due to misfortune. They come in seeking help knowing they will be taken care of regardless of their ability to pay. The relief they experience as a result of our work at the clinic and the knowledge that they are being helper shows through on their faces as they leave.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase the patient base by expanding its marketing and advertisement ability.

I am a legal american living in PC . It's very expensive, and I can't afford rent much less insurance. I am a mature single seasonal worker I am very grateful to you for donating your your time, financial assistance and for helping me to have hope.......that maybe things are going to be alright. When you are sick and you have no insurance, and no money, there are not alot of choices. But through the Peoples clinic, I am able to seek the help that I need and not feel ashamed that i can't afford it. Thank you all for everything I really appreciate it! L.R.
