I met Gretchen when she bought Black Raven Stables with the intentions of starting a great horse rescue program and dreams of therapeutic riding for kids. I managed the stables some years before she bought it, so was able to help from the beginning. I have been at almost every schooling show put on, helping in the office, meeting each and every exhibitor that has signed up over the years. I have helped unload new horses off the trailer that are seriously in need of help, TLC, good food and basic care every horse should have every day. I too have seen wonderful transformations of very sick and starved horses to become beautiful, healthy and happy once again. People Helping Horses does a wonderful job in not only the rehabilitation of the horses physically, but mentally through careful handling and the training program. Keep up the good work!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Again, I have seen the wonderful results in rehabilitating horses from sick, starving, skinny or injured into healthy and happy horses.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I like how this rescue program is run, I don't think I would change anything as it is now.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the great bunch of dedicated volunteers in the program.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very friendly, helpful, always willing to pitch in with what needed done.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

buy more land, build another nice barn, and have plenty in the bank for the care and feeding of horses in need, and to keep the therapeutic riding program alive for all of the kids out there that so benefit from the horses physically and mentally.

Ways to make it better...

only if I had more free time to give to help at the barn.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

finding donations right now. Money is hard to come by for us all, especially when you rely on people's generous contributions.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Gretchen, great work over the years, fellow volunteers Thank You for your help with the program.

An organized, and well-run organization with a great schedule of events and multiple ways to contribute. Annual "Celebrate the Horse" and bi-monthly schooling shows involve the entire region in their program. Great way to spend a Saturday!

I've watched as the horses arrive in dire straights, and leave fit, happy, and well trained, ready to enjoy an amazing life.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Let more people know about them, so others may help expand on what they already do. This is a classy operation, with top caliber leaders who plan all year long to make the program work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They have a positive attitude, and they keep in touch through modern media, sharing this attitude with their group.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Well educated, fun, talented, good horse people from all walks of life.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the horse world.

Ways to make it better...

If there were 50 hours to each day.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

More horses need them all the time.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Gretchen is a terrific leader, who inspires and motivates everyone around her.

I began helping with the Therapeutic Riding program, where you are able to get the horses ready for classes and assist the disabled riders. Then I began to help in the Rescue barn. I tended to the horses in the stalls to ensure they had clean water. I also was able to groom some of the horses and take them for short walks. I helped in the office with data entry and maintaining the facilities.

I started volunteering at People Helping Horses in 2007 and have been hooked ever since. PHH is an organization that truly cares for the horses they take in. Every decision that PHH makes (in business, finances, events etc.) is first and foremost based on what is best for the horses. The staff at PHH has dedicated thousands of hours to organizing its volunteer programs and training its volunteers (Barn and Therapeutic Riding), making this a wonderful place to volunteer. Each volunteer that goes through their horsemanship training program learns how to safely and effectively handle the horses as well as how to help the organization in many other aspects. This makes for a very rewarding experience and sets a wonderful standard for volunteer programs. I am so grateful for the experiences I've had, knowledge I've gained, and relationships I've built in my time at People Helping Horses.
