Pegasus is here for the long haul. We began in 1994, starting small, teaching kids and adults about marine sustainability and the beauty of the ocean...now it's 2011...10,000+ kids later, we are still hauling. We do it one kid, one voyage at a time. Like the boat, we have a great deal of directional stability. When we innovate, we search deeply for the best change, then test it until it breaks. Then we know what works, what doesn't, and where the limit is. That way, we keep everyone safe. Not one injury or parental complaint in 17 years. We invest in our volunteers, training, the best equipment, backup, procedures, evaluation, and ability to circumvent the whole command hierarchy to pose a safety issue or to file a grievance. We have loyal donors, the ballast on our keel; and in recent years, we have begun to diversify funding and revenue generation with private charters. We also leverage our capacity by offering long-term reliable volunteer crew the ability to donate voyages to other community groups, thereby raising many thousands of dollars.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing how kids who enter the program at 13, earn their way, give back, and graduate, and then come back to mentor other kids via our partners; and I have learned a great deal about the need for fairness, consistency, and procedure in dealing with all the issues that arise--I have learned a huge amount from being involved with Pegasus Project and everyone involved, what a gift!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

help them scale up to a regional program involving collaboration with three or four other organizations to realize the vision of "No Kid Left Ashore!"
