I hope that people will consider that more money may need to go towards fundraising when the need and the cause are less well known. When you look at the amazing work this charity does and how impactful they are in rescuing abused donkeys, I believe this charity is very worthy of donations. I am truly grateful that Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue works tirelessly to provide a safe haven for the ever increasing number of donkeys in need.

Who would think donkeys? But when it comes to abandoned and abused animals, no creature should have to live in deplorable conditions. Mar and Amy Myers have taken it upon themselves, traveling throughout the country to rescue these beautiful animals and give them a chance to heal physically as well as emotionally and live out their lives with dignity and without the fear of torture. While on a mission visiting one of their sanctuaries in Florida, Mark and Amy made a special visit to us to show their personal appreciation as donors. It is something we didn't expect, nor was it necessary, but it demonstrates their heartfelt thanks for all the support that they receive. You can be sure that your donations are going to a great cause and Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue is run by truly dedicated people.

I appreciate what this rescue does--donkeys are so smart and not appreciated enough. I do wish that a smaller percentage went to fundraising--I get so many envelopes, complete with postage stamps--but the founders are not taking huge salaries and I like that.

I’ve donated before and I almost did again until I saw that sappy sentence on the envelope: ”I care about donkeys; Please tell Floyd I care.” I hate crap like this. Sappy story on the front of the envelope it was mailed in to.. This is a shame - way too much money coming up with sappy fund raising stuff and not enough on what’s really important. Oh what the heck, I’ll send in $5.

I love donkeys and want to help in any way that I can. I do see that quite a bit is spent on fundraising if you look at the 990 form. I believe it was over $600,000. Also, if one divides the number of donkeys rescued by the total expenses for the year, it comes to about $6,100 per donkey. I am glad to see so many donkeys being helped by this organization although the cost per donkey seems high to me. (Although I admit this is an uneducated observation and may be a completely reasonable cost).

I adore donkeys and donate to many animal charities, but am concerned that PVDR is spending far too much money on fundraising and not enough on the program itself.

I have no personal experience with PVDR other than having sent a contribution a couple of years ago.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Spend more money on the program to achieve a better charity rating. Once the public sees a better charity rating, they are more inclined to donate.
How I initially heard about PVDR, I don't recall. As a manager and as a business owner I was very impressed with what Mark Meyers had achieved in only 3 years. He had to have had a business background. Because I wanted to know more I emailed him, and he responded. He did formerly own his own business. I went to Charity Navigator and found nothing at all , but I was so impressed with his results that I became a donor.
Since that time several years ago, I continue to be amazed at Mark and Amy's passion, zeal, and dedication to donkeys. Even the children are dedicated to the donkeys. I continue to be impressed by Mark's leadership and entrepreneurial skills as he has developed and defined new ways to find homes for adoptable donkeys through his satellite programs and the ways in which he has found to care for donkeys as economically as possible.
The man thinks, and he produces extraordinary results. I have worked with dogs and with horses and understand the level of commitment that he has. Animals are 24/7 physically and emotionally hard work. I wish that I could find PVDR some huge donors, people with a large capacity for charities, to help Mark and Amy financially to endow their work for the future.
While I personally donate to about 5 charities, PVDR is the only one that gets an automatic check every single month. I only wish it could be more. And now I see that PVDR is included in Charity Navigator ratings and is improving its financials each year.
For the Meyers family, PVDR is all about love in the highest sense of the word. I hope that everyone reading my review will dig deep into their pockets and help PVDR reach its goals.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the great expansion of their programs in other states with additional ranches and satellite programs to place adoptable donkeys in forever homes. With the books he's written and through the educational programs offered by PVDR, more and more people are learning the value of donkeys as pets which allows PVDR to keep rescuing more donkeys.

hope that Mark can find larger donors so that more money could go into the programs and less to fundraising. PVDR has very low administrative expenses. PVDR needs to create a foundation that would endow the care of the donkeys. Also, I don't know if Mark and Amy have thought about their successors in this organization for future years. I bet they have thought about it, but I don't know what they've done about it. Sue Flannery, BSN, RN, CFP
