I was looking for an intensive volunteer experience 6 months ago, and I am so glad I happened upon PVMOW! I began as a volunteer driver, and discovered the joy of visiting, befriending and assisting local elderly people. It was only a 1 hour commitment each month, so I called their Director, and started assisting her in the office too. I found a hugely effective base of local volunteers (450 of them) and a dedicated board, and real longevity in people's commitments to this little chapter of the huge National MOW organization. Some people here have volunteered close 25-30 years! Their current Director wants to do so much more than just maintain the status quo of feeding 250 or so elderly a week; she has a huge vision of providing more services for her elderly clients, moving her organization into the 21rst century, and collaborating with other charities. This is a real grassroots, hardworking place that manages to do so much good with only a small budget and 1fulltime and 1 part time staff. They are tried, trusted and true. If you are looking for a place that will wring the most bang out of your donation, consider this local little engine that could!
