Great opportunity to provide health care and a needed supply to people in need.
It is not recognized for its value to the community as it provides working poor shoes and medical care.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the last 5 years. Seeing people leave better off in physical and psychological ways

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find a way to get more companies to give shoes; too much difficulty in US companies giving shoes to US citizens

It has been my honor to coordinate the Minnesota division of Our Hearts to Your Soles. Once a year we bring together health care providers, shoe fitters and their respective friends and families to provide free foot exams, basic foot care and a new pair of shoes and socks. During the last 3 years we have examined and shoed more than 1100 homeless men, women and children. It is heart-warming and incredibly rewarding as a participant. The MN branch, like our parent organization, has essentially no administrative costs. Nearly everyone who works at the event donates their time and St. Stephen’s Shelter provides the gymnasium at no cost.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the appreciation expressed by so many we have helped

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Spend some money on a serious PR campaign to encourage awareness of this wonderful cause

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

How obviously rewarding the event is to the volunteers. While the homeless get the medical care, socks and shoes; the people who donate express such great joy being there to help.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Giving families (children as young as 9 to retired shoe fitters in their 80's)

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand the difference beyond one time a year and in one citty. One cannot get work without healthy feet and shoes

Ways to make it better...

we could have better attention from news organizations to encourage more donation

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of recognition and lack of funding

One thing I'd also say is that...

Red Wing's donations of thousands of shoes and the selfless efforts by the Contis to coordinate 42 states need to be acknowledged.

Over the past four years, Our Hearts to Your Soles' partnership with Helping Up Mission has been beneficial to hundreds of men in their recovery from chemical addiction. Helping Up Mission (located in Baltimore, Maryland) provides a unique twelve month residential Spiritual Recovery Program set in a Twelve Step Therapeutic Community. All of the men the enter The Mission are unemployed. Our clients are unable to afford either the shoes provided by our Hearts to Your Soles or the outstanding podiatric care provided by Dr. John Campbell and his colleagues. The impact of the shoes and the podiatric care always lifts the spirits and the self-esteem of our clients. Our Hearts to Your Soles, which functions with less than one percent of adminstrative costs, is truly appreciated by Helping Up Mission Staff and Clients.

This is an astounding accomplishment--keeping all administrative costs low, Dr. Silverman and his team have given their time and expertise for the good of a growing population of the homeless. Expanding their good work in Minneapolis this year they included people from St. Paul--Their care and concern is extraordinary!

Our Hearts to your Soles came to our homeless shelter in the Cass Corridor, midtown Detroit, the epicenter of unemployment and despair and provided over 140 pairs of shoes and 280 pairs of socks. The orthopedic surgeons, orthotists, nurse practitioners and others fitted the shoes to each client. They got a standing ovation when it was over. Time.com covered the event: http://detroit.blogs.time.com/2009/11/26/giving-detroiters-a-foot-up/

Our Hearts to Your Soles is a great organizaion. Because of its leadership we were able to provide a wonderful service to the homeless in the Sioux Falls SD area. It also provided the staff and their families at Orthopaedic Consultants the opportunity to meet and help some very special people. It all went very well. The coordination of the organizaion is "top notch"

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the joy of seeing the faces of the homeless as they realize someone cares about them. Our doctors give them a breif exam and then fit them with a beautiful new pair of shoes and we provide them with warm socks as well. It is priceless.

Our Hearts to Your Soles was conceived by a teenager and has grown to this year include 42 sites nationwide and over 7000 pairs of new shoes. More then shoes, the medical evaluation of the homeless men at the shelters and treatment of nails and calluses is important. At our shelter, our presence and the fact we were willing to even look at their feet was met with disbelief. The men were absolutely blown away to be receiving new shoes that were fit to them by medical professionals. The overhead for Our Hearts to Your Soles is very low. The community volunteerism that is generated by their network of surgeons is huge. This is truely a great from the ground up organization that has not yet reached its capacity. Locally, working with Our Hearts to Your Soles, has inspired several other local groups to donate to the shelter and my office to make the shelter it's Christmas giving recipient. Hats off to the Conti's. They are truly making the world a better place! In addition, they have helped locate a size 16 pair of shoes for one of the men which are on the way to the shelter.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the faces of the men receiving the shoes and the shelter workers who stated it was very difficult to find new shoes for the men.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand as much as I could..and try and get women's shoes too!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

their hearts are in the right place. Their organization is super and their administrative costs very low.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

AWESOME

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

really make a difference for the homeless both men and women. They could expand from a once a year effort to multiple times a year. They would have the funds to hire a coordinator and really kick this into overdrive.

Ways to make it better...

I had more shoes and more time

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

time. Dr. Conti is a busy practicing foot and ankle surgeon as are all of the local site volunteers. But if everyone in the AOFAS volunteered...incredible

One thing I'd also say is that...

the vision of a teenager and the drive that he had with the support of his father is just testimony to how wonderful they are. I am humbled to be a part of this. Please support them.

I have helped the Minneapolis, MN effort for a few years. Admin costs are verty low, and the work directly, immediately benefits homeless citizens who need shows. Additionally, the medical staff present during events helps ensure a good combination of medical oversight and useful help.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have participated in a few Minnesota events and seen firsthand how the program benefits those it is designed to help.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Marshal greater resources and expand the reach of the organization.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Provision of shoes is exactly what the attendees need.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Competent, helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Make an impact felt more substantially, since we know, clinically, foot problems are very common among the general population and with even greater incidence among the homeless.

Ways to make it better...

Some beneficiaries were more flexible in their acceptance of the type of shoes they received.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The planning requirements for each event are significant, since there is only one local event annually.

One thing I'd also say is that...

There is joy in helping when the benefit is so immediate and significant.

We did an event with Our Hearts to your Soles event in Las Vegas, NV and were able to screen and give shoes to over 150 homeless men. Less than 1% administrative costs and all the money they collect goes to providing the homeless with services.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

people's smiles on their face when they receive free shoes, socks and a medical screening on their feet.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to get more shoes and educate the media on it's importance and those who work on this issue.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They give something that is so essential that gives comfort and help with their employment so that they may be independent one day.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Wonderful people that give of their time and expect nothing in return--everyone from doctors, to your students.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

shoe all homeless and allow more people to be employed and independent.

Ways to make it better...

we had more shoes.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

getting more shoes.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the homeless in our country often get forgotten and the key to helping them is not just feeding and sheltering them but giving them tools to help them support themselves and "Our Hearts to your Soles" does with their donation of shoes.
