This group is trying to pioneer a perspective and policies that will preserve low income neighborhoods and empower residents. It is brave, vocal and willing to alienate politicians, depending on its members to press for changes.
Yet it seems to do more on injustice analysis and noting problems with the system than producing promised or tangible results. Several of its promised programs or initiatives were dropped or have been on hold. Can they sustain and grow programs?
No organizing of tenants now. No housing coops program. The City will not agree to ONE DC's major position to redefine low income affordable housing eligibility. The fight over a City land parcel in the end produced little that was tangible. Residents have yet to get promised new hotel jobs. And now a major study questions the effectiveness of first source job training and hiring programs for the unemployed in DC. The focus on the Shaw neighborhood has been dropped for a more city wide focus. The Barry Farms project has been dropped. Where is the focus now? Core leadership does not appear to be expanding.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
In attending their events, reading their materials, meeting their staff.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Pose to them just what have they accomplished in the past year in housing or land work. What will they achieve in 2011? Where are their 1000 members? Why don't more turn out, participate, agitate?
