Working with OYE showed me that in a short time you can help change lives and that there are people in the world who are "paying it forward" and working to connect our global community. The staff was great, the mission was clear, and the experience was unlike any other. Every teen, every college student around the world should take the time out to empower these exceptional teens working through inconveniences in the name of progress!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching the first class of OYE grow up to be the current staff members, and watching my own students connect to the experiences of children living in the "third world" take opportunities/ and nurture relationships that they take for granted,

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand its reach to other Latin American nations.

I had the pleasure of volunteering with OYE about 5 years ago when the organization was still in its beginning stages. It has been amazing for me to see how this grassroots organization has grown over the years. It is incredible how the ideals of just a couple of young people, transformed into action, has created such positive change for the lives of the children they reach and the community as a whole. It has truly been inspirational for me to have been involved with OYE.

OYE puts all the money raised directly into programs and direct aid to the youth the organization serves. It has one of the lowest overheads and you can be assured whether you volunteer, donate or become involved, your time and money will not be wasted. Kids who have so little are doing so much with their lives.

Link graduates up as mentors to new youth receiving services. Spread the word so it can take off on a national level in other cities in Honduras. It is a great organization.

The Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE) is a youth-led organization located in El Progreso, Honduras which works to create a new generation of leaders.

Founded in 2005, OYE was built on the belief that if presented with the necessary tools and training, youth hold the potential to
transform their society. In a region where the talents and aspirations of youth are ignored by communities and governments alike, OYE's vision is to infuse youth with the training and experience necessary to BE the change in their communities. Built on the approach of youth leading youth, OYE works to create a society where young people have a voice and become the primary actors in determining their futures. By involving youth in every step of OYE's youth development programs (magazine, radio, sports, art) young people become empowered by assuming leadership roles at a relatively young age. The results have been astounding as youth, who would otherwise be considered marginalized, are leading community wide efforts to address everything from environmental protection to advocating for the importance of education among their peers. It is through these efforts that OYE helps youth become active, responsible leaders who are committed to inspiring positive change for themselves and their country.

OYE's core value has always revolved around education, which it supports by providing academic scholarships (high school and college) to promising students who would otherwise be denied an education and most likely be forced into some sort of child labor in efforts to help support their families. The tools students gain from their experiences in OYE's integrated youth leadership training programs are imeasurable and go far beyond what is provided by a formal education.

Having been fortunate enough to work with OYE over the past six years, it has been a humbling experience to watch timid and passive youth blossom into young people who believe in themselves and believe in the change they can bring to their country. OYE knows that change must come from within. The future is now in Honduras and OYE's youth leaders are seizing the day. As an OYE youth group slogan reads, "Mi Voz es Poder."
My Voice Is Power. Now, more than ever before, Honduran youth are speaking up and leading the way.

COPA OYE - Growth of OYE's youth sports program

OYE has always used sports and the arts as a tool to teach life skills and leadership to youth. During OYE's early years of youth outreach, we sponsored a girls youth group (Las Panchas) and helped them create their own soccer team. We held local fundraisers and led workshops teaching them about life skills, teamwork, leadership and self-confidence. Before long, those young women became a force within their communities, leading their peers by example and helping guide similar OYE youth outreach programs.

Increase fundraising opportunities and awareness of our work in Honduras. OYE's model of youth leadership training and scholarship programs can easily be expanded throughout the country and Central America, however limitations on resources and funds pose a serious obstacle.

OYE provided me with one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! Their organization and strong outreach into all segments of El Progresso's population allowed them to have a strong and positive impact on the community around them. Their willingness to tackle a variety of problems and give responsibility to the students themselves allows participants to gain life and career skills that are useful and critical for their individual futures. OYE's capacity to work globally with American students like myself ensures that it will maintain a strong presence in the long run. Whether it is a trip to a local orphanage or skill or doing its multi-faceted radio program, OYE is a testament to the future solutions for the El Progresso community and beyond. I look forward to being witness to its ever growing progress in the future.

OYE, MI Voz Es Poder! What an incredible organization and unparalleled experience. Nowhere else in the world have I come across an organization with such a clear and positive mission--empower youth to create socially conscious agents of change--that permeates all the work it does. Oye was created by youth, is run by youth, and directly benefits youth. Its goals are achieved everyday by its existence, but its programs and projects fortify and deepen its impact. OYE equips 90 students with scholarships and capacity/life building skill classes. These students learn about topics ranging from sexual education to project management. After learning they begin teaching, OYE's youth participate in projects that they manage amplifying the voice and positive impact of OYE.
Beyond all its other great attributes, OYE's highest quality in its love. Once you come to OYE as a students, volunteer, employee, or donor you are part of this community. The office becomes a second home, and you know that no matter what happens there is always a place for you within OYE's 4 walls.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The first time I volunteered at OYE I met a child who would hardly look at me let alone speak to me. Six months later that same child was quickly becoming a leader in his radio project. After another four months I returned again, and now I would be working directly with this boy who before could hardly look at me. Now the shy timid youth was the coordinator of his own art program and leading 15 other youth. All because OYE believed in him and gave him the responsibility.

Its har to say what I would like to change about the organization. The greatest thing I'd like to see happen is that all of the people supporting these project and these kids have the chance to visit Honduras and experience them first hand. Working as the volunteer coordinator I believe that there is something incredibly powerful about visiting an organization like OYE, and it doesn't matter how old you are or how much experience you have there is always something new to learn.

OYE agreed to work with Mary Baldwin College two years ago providing an international social work internship opportunity for our seniors in the field. The partnership has been an unbelievable, life changing experience for our students. OYE has provided them a culturally diverse experience to work alongside Honduran youth. The staff is proud of the difference OYE makes in Progreso and contributes a progressive approach to working with youth.

meeting the youth and the difference the OYE has made in their lives. Children who were destined to a life of poverty are instead given a chance to receive an education and grow up to be a future leader in their own communities.

give them more resources so that more scholarships could be given to deserving youth.

Thank you very much for this opportunity to inform you about the Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE), an independent, sustainable youth organization in El Progreso, Honduras.

OYE began in 2005 with a vision of a society where young people have a powerful voice and the knowledge and
resources to effectively use it to create change in their lives. We believed that by fully participating in their own development, young Hondurans would be empowered to become active, responsible leaders in their community. We are proud to say that today OYE is a dynamic, fast-growing, and inspiring organization run by Honduran youth who are creating positive change for themselves and their country.

OYE is, at its core, a youth education organization. We provide academic scholarships to students who would otherwise be denied an education due to economic barriers. However, OYE views access to formal education as merely the first step toward youth empowerment and our integrated development approach goes far beyond traditional academic learning. We train young leaders by providing them access to capacity building, leadership training and community engagement opportunities- all of which inspire and equip them with the awareness and skills they need to take control of their own lives.

OYE is an innovative, dynamic, and inspirational youth-led organization that puts the power to make positive change directly into the hands of young people themselves. I consider myself lucky to be involved with OYE for over six years and OYE forever holds a special and important place in my heart.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have personally followed the lives of hundreds of youth as they passed in and out of OYE's doors in El Progreso and I have watched them grow from shy, quiet children into confident, mature, and powerful young adults with a will and the tools to change their lives and the future of their country.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase fundraising and funding to better able to provide for the larger youth constituency in Honduras and be able to grow to a country-wide youth development organization.
