to the side and let life take over. Life took over, indeed. Unemployed and disgruntled, I soon began walking the streets going door-to-door trying to advertise and repair for residential customers. Still trying to figure out how to get some credentials under my belt. As fate would have it, I ended up advertising to someone who referred me to an old classmate of Director Joe McKinley. This classmate told me that Joe might help me get into the market. No truer words had been spoken. Soon, I was signing up for Street Tec

I've had the opportunity of working with Jewish World Watch through my high school. I have been educated about injustice all over the world, and have done hands-on work to try to help stop these things from happening. I have learned how to advocate for refugee relief in Darfur, and have contributed to various projects that JWW has started to raise funds. JWW has helped me learn to be a better speaker, advocate, fundraiser and activist.

  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... its ability to empower young people to make a difference.

I think Jewish World Watch is the most amazing Jewish organization that I have ever had the privelege of working with. Jewish World Watch has mobilized thousands of Jews and non-Jews on a grass roots basis to take responsibility to fight against genocide and other egregious violatoins of human rights, no matter who the victims are. Since the holocaust, Jews have asked how the world could have been so silent while 6 million of our people were murdered. Given our disappointment with the world's response to Hitler's evil, we now must set the example and the standard of how decent, caring human beings should respond to evil in the world. We have raised the awareness of tens of thousands of people to the genocide in Darfur, and we have mobilized the Jewish community of Southern California to build political will against genocide. We have also provided millions of dollars of relief to the refugees in the camps. Now we are beginning to mobilize about the horrors that are taking place in Congo. This organization brings the lessons of the Torah to life. I am proud to have co-founded Jewish World Watch with the great Rabbi Harold Schulweis, and am proud every day of my life to be engaged in this holy work and to motivate others to engage with us!!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... visiting the Darfuri reguee camps and seeing the difference that our JWW projects made in the daily life of Darfuri refugees. From vegetable gardens, to solar cooking to medical clinics and beyond, we have made a huge impact and I saw it with my own eyes
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... mobilizing the southern California Jewish community and beyond to fight the genocide in Darfur. Before our formation, no one in LA had any awareness of this tragedy, and now the entire community is mobilized. That is extremely gratifying.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... completely amazing. WIth almsot all of the synagogues in LA, Orange and Ventura counties being members of JWW, I have met a wide array of rabbis and lay leaders--orth,conserv. and reform. They are amazing people and I am enriched by these relationships.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... organize other communities the way we have organized the greater LA area, thereby enlarging the Jewish commitment to the anti-genocide movement in this country. And, we could provide relief to many more thousands of genocide survivors.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... ensuring that our public can sustain its interest in the cause of global genocide--i.e. the fight against compassion fatigue.

I first became aware of JWW when Janice Kamenir-Reznik spoke about her trip to the refugee camps in Chad back in 2007. I was so moved by her efforts, her raw emotion and her spirit that I knew I had to be involved. I worked with my community to get them involved in the work of JWW. We have joined the Walk for Darfur 2 years in a row, plus some of their other events. They range from academic to thought-provoking to just plain fun. Plus, the pieces they put out for Pesach and Rosh Hashanah are beautiful and interesting. I look forward to getting more involved in the future.

The Great!
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... they cover all aspects of stopping atrocities around the world. They work with the community and government locally as well as the refugees on the ground in Africa and Israel.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… open up other offices around the country. I don't know how they do all that they do from a small office in Encino, but I think it is time for them to expand to NY, SF, etc.
