An Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed.
We engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with K-3 children who need literacy support. Participating children also receive new books each month to keep and read with their families.
Programs: SMART is a book and reading program for K-3 children who are at risk of low literacy and its associated negative outcomes. Every week during the school year, a SMART volunteer reads with two children for a half-hour each for a total of one hour per week. SMART also gives participating students two new books each month to take home, keep and read with their families. The SMART premise is that every child can learn to read, and the job of educating Oregon's children belongs to all of us.

It was so much fun being a reading mentor with the Oregon SMART program. It was great to see how excited students would be for their reading time! I only wish I had known about the program sooner. I volunteered during my last two quarters at the U of O and would have loved to help more kids discover the joy of reading.
