This is a non-profit that certainly seems to make the most of every dollar it raises. A dedicated board and staff work closely to identify women with mental illness who can benefit from the supervised living setting they have created especially for this purpose. They've created a warm and friendly home for women who otherwise would be without much if any support or supervision. They provide structure and guidance for women whose lives are turned around by having a stable and safe home to call their own. This is proof that showing respect for and understanding the needs of those with mental illness can go a long way towards addressing the problems of homelessness!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

tours of the facilities and through hearing stories from a board member.

My family has developed a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding homelessness and seen the best efforts carried out effectively through Open Arms Housing. Open Arms Housing demonstrates the effectiveness of partnership between people who are homeless and volunteers, non profit leaders, corporate supporters and government agenicies. Open Arms is a great example of the broader community coming together to improve people's lives and to feel good about the hard work.

I have served on the Board of Open Arms for ten years. Our building, the Dunbar, has provided permanent supported housing for 16 formerly homeless women who suffer from mental illness. I am getting to knowthem as I deliver items to the building. I am proud to have been a part of this project from the beginning when we bought the place in 2000. The place is a beautiful, warm, comfortable and safe home for these fragile women.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

in many ways. I spend lots of time with the staff and the ladies we serve. It is truly a magical place. The ladies love their apartments and feel totally safe and welcome.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would buy, renovate and provide permanent supportive housing for many more women just like the Dunbar.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the joy of seeing the purchase, renovation, decoration and use of a small apartment building for a vitally important result.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The best! We hired an executive director and program manager who are great - they Get the purpose of Housing First.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build more projects like the Dunbar. We have the expertise to do more buildings like this one. I am very interested in raising 10 million dollars to do more.

Ways to make it better...

we could have finished sooner! Raising the money was tricky at first until our donors realized that Housing First works! Providing low-barrier shelter works.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

raising money to begin a second project.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This project has been the most wonderful thing in my life!

Open Arms is our immediate neighbor to our main facilities in the District of Columbia. It operates a lovely building serving homeless women that provides intensive supportive services as well as housing. They do good work for a good cause. It's Executive Director has also become very involved in a Supportive Housing Working Group that I co-chair. Ken Ellison, Senior Housing Director, SOME, Inc. (So Others Might Eat)
