I came across One Heart Source when looking for an opportunity to undertake meaningful teaching work that would have a real and lasting impact. The organisation's model of homestays, coupled with school and community engagement was particuarly appealing in this regard. I was also given the opportunity to engage in significant pre-field training before arriving in country which was especially useful as this was my first time volunteering. Whist on my programme I spent a month living and teaching in the Arusha area of Tanzania and was afforded more of a cultural insight that I had ever hoped possible. Not only was I teaching in a local school, but also leading community health education efforts and tutoring the children in my homestay. Overall an incredible experience.

My recent experience volunteering with One Heart Source is something that I will never forget. After living in Tanzania for a month, a little piece of the village and the organization will remain forever in my mind and heart. The organization stays true to it's description as grassroots, and is organized and led by young, motivated, and passionate, individuals, unlike many NGO's. I would highly recommend this organization to anyone who is looking to expand their knowledge of other people, cultures, education, health, and most importantly, to expand their heart.

This organization is a joke. It's almost non-existent. Students will do all of the work during the application process without any guidance. I would never recommend this organization to anyone, instead meet with an advisor that has experience working with other volunteer organizations. Do not risk it. The feeling is unexplainable and you will feel cheated.

I volunteered with One Heart Source this summer and had an amazing experience. Considering it is a young organization, they are highly ambitious and have a lot going on. My coordinator was amazing at helping us jump into work quickly. One of my favorite aspects of the program was the opportunity to live with a homestay family and really dive into the culture. I also enjoyed meeting other volunteers from other states and countries.

My parents were concern about safety, but I assured them that I felt safe the entire 2 months there. They have a large security staff that works through out the night, securing around the homestays.

starting to teach in a school that has not been reached by any other organization.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would have liked to establish more consistent community teaching times and maybe started this early on.

This organization spams universities all over the country with fliers trying to lure students into "volunteering". It is really a scam to separate college students from $2500. Yes, the volunteers are expected to pay for their trip. It is not so much a non-profit as a money-sponging charity. A large portion of the student's money goes to keep the administrators in chardonnay and goat's cheese from Whole Foods. The organization refuses to release statistics about how much of every dollar actually goes to Africa. Don't let them pull your heart strings with advertisements showing sad-faced little children. It's not about the children it's about making the people running the non-profit fatter.
