I have been involved with NPIHN for virtually all of its years of existence as at various times a Congregational Coordinator and a board member. I have seen many, many families grow and blossom as a result of their experience with the Network and the volunteers and staff that make up the Network. The Network has grown greatly so that it not only hosts families but also seeks to help the guests after they have moved on into the community. It's been great to observe the development of the organization and the expansion to meet families in many different ways, all while doing so in a very cost-effective manner. I also feel that the volunteers benefit greatly by their involvement with the guests who "put a face" on the societal problem of homelessness. The Network is a blessing to many, and I continue to support it through my time and money.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Talking with guests after they have "graduated from the program" and observe and hear feedback from congregation members who have volunteered

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Obtain more funding so that the staff could be paid better and the services could be expanded further

I chose to be a Board Member after watching, supporting and seeing my friends enthusiasm as she serves on this board. My initial feeling was this is a very caring and empowering organization. The leadership of the Executive Director is outstanding. The services provided is useful, helpful and definitely wonderful effort to help those in need. I am proud to be part of this team.

As a former board president, I have first-hand experience with NPIHN's organization's leadership. Rachel is an amazing executive director and advocate. This city is lucky to have her.

I chose to be on the Board of the Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network after spending some time mentoring a young woman and her three year old son who were temporarily housed at our synagogue. I found what the Network was doing to change and improve the lives of people who did not want to be homeless and were striving to put their lives back in order to be compelling. I decided that this was so important that I could not just look to others to do the work, but had to carry my share of the load by becoming an active participant.

The Great!

NPIHN is the best shelter i have ever had the experince of being a volunteer at and the only shelter that i have been a participant of. When i came into the program I didnt know what to expect. I had heard so many horror stories about how people had to share familes with 4 & 5 other familes...stories of beint talked down to and or turning a blind eye to what was going wrong in the program. there wasnt any issue of that sort at NPHIHN. I truly apreciate everything that was done for me and my daughters and that is why I have no problems returning the favor.

If i had to make a change it would be, more money for the staff workers. And to be able to hire more staff so they would be able to serve more families.

I have volunteered for NPIHN numerous times and in various roles. Not only have I had great experiences with the families in the program and the dedicated staff as well. I have also gained new insights on poverty and life in general. Homelessness could happen to all of us. It doesn't discriminate.

Our church has long supported NPIHN and helped by providing housing for families in need. NPIHN really deserves to have a grant so it can help even more people.

I am a forner volunteer, board member and board president. NPIHN is a truly amazing organization due to its dedicated staff and volunteers. It helps families get back on their feet by providing a myriad of services, including housing and counseling. It has a remarkable success rate with over 90% of its families never returning to homelessness.

As a volunteer since the beginning of the program (almost 20 years) I spend one or two overnights during the twice yearly periods when they stay at my church in Germantown. At these times you get to meet the guests and learn about their history, what they are now doing to alter their conditions, and their aspirations for the future. It is very inspiring to see, in spite of all their challenges, how they rise each day to meet these obligations in a very positive and inspirational manner.
Five years ago, after retirement, I was asked to represent my church on the board. During this time I have been able to be involved with many other aspects of the program, particularly focused on ways to provide transformational housing and financial matters.
The real joy of NPIHN is the involvement of so many volunteers who give to others their time, talents, energy, and finances because they see, first hand, the help that is provided to these good people who have had some tough times.

The Great!
