Northern California Youth Leadership Seminar (NCYLS)

I've been involved as a volunteer and advocate since the beginning of NCYLS--and that in itself is a commendation. It's so easy for volunteers to become exhausted, used up, disenchanted, for their attention and interest to wander. But for me, as for so many other volunteers, the enchantment has grown. I am continually amazed at the changes the group facilitates within the students who attend, heartened to note how many volunteers return year after year to support the students. As an inevitable continuation, it is a continual delight to see how many of the students become team leaders, leaders and board members, and how many of them go on with lives strengthened and transformed by the work of NCYLS.

As a sophomore in high school, I attended NCYLS simply because I figured it would look good on college applications. I was ready to play leadership games and untangle the human knot a bunch of times. By the end of the first keynote speaker, I was already making promises to myself and brainstorming how I could be a catalyst at my rural, struggling high school. The three days I spent there honestly changed my perspective. I was no longer satisfied and was motivated to work for change. I created four leadership workshops for junior high students and volunteered for youth outdoor education camps. I was able to transfer the positive energy NCYLS instilled within me to many adolescents in my community. I returned to NCYLS the next year as a Junior Crew member and helped guide and support a group of sophomores through the seminar. I grew closer with my fellow J-Crew members and they helped motivate me to complete college applications and reminded me to stay positive and encourage those around me. NCYLS continues to change lives and inspire students unlike any other workshop or leadership activity I have seen.

I first came to NCYLS as a volunteer four years ago, and I was blown away! NCYLS is a leadership conference for high school kids that are recommended by their schools for a weekend together with other children their same age. Over this weekend the kids are exposed to extatic individuals who stead them through numerous leadership activities and seminars that help mold them into the future leaders of tomorrow. One might not think one weekend could change a child's attitude about being a leader at their school so much, but everyone leaves the seminar with a bursting ambition not only to better themselves, but to better their communities at home. I myself have continued to volunteer three out of the last four years because the amazing attitude and lessons learned every year apply not only to the kids but to adults like myself as well.

As a sophomore in high school, I attended this seminar in the midst of my school election to becoming ASB Vice President. I expected the typical leadership conference: a cheesy keynote speaker, ice breakers, name games, etc. I had no idea that my life and perspective as a young yet influential member of my community would be changed forever. At NCYLS, I met people who were passionate, enthusiastic, and inspirational, and left with the motivated to make a change in my community back home. Although I lost my election that year, I took on my junior year with more fire and passion than I had ever seen in myself, and ended up being elected by my peers to be ASB president as a result of the positive attitude that cultivated within me in the months following NCYLS. I felt a need to return to NCYLS and pay forward all the gifts and lessons that the seminar had given me. Not only was I inspired and motivated to impact my community and peers in large ways, but I was just a happier and more appreciative person in general. I applied and was selected to return as a j-crew leader at NCYLS, and had the single most rewarding experience of my life this far. The sophomores that I guided through the seminar had transformed before my eyes from shy and self conscious high school students to enthusiastic, confident, and caring leaders. They inspired me even further and helped me discover my passion for igniting passion in other peoples' lives. NCYLS has touched thousands of lives, by cultivating leadership potential and inspiring high school students and their families to be the change they wish to see in the world. I will go back to help NCYLS in any way they need me to for as many years as they will have me. I thank NCYLS for helping me become the confident and happy person that I am today, and I would absolutely encourage any person to contribute to their cause of changing the world one sophomore at a time.

I became involved with NCYLS in 2010 when two very committed NCYLS members recruited me to be a team lead for the 2010 seminar, then was asked to be the Senior Program Director for the 2011 seminar, then recruited to be co-Executive Director. I was hooked with the first “Outstanding.” NCYLS is directly involved in growing confidence leaders and changing the lives of others, including mine! I enjoy every person associated with this organization and very proud to be a part of this movement!!!

I attended NCYLS as a sophomore in 2010 and it proved to be one of the most indescribable experiences. I enjoyed every single moment-- from listening to key note speeches to meeting tons of students all over Northern California. NCYLS taught me to be more than just a leader; it taught me how to be an individual who can actually make a difference. This seminar made such an impact on my life that I returned as a member of the Planning Committee and a J-Crew.
Experiencing this seminar from a staff perspective was even more outstanding as I witnessed the change in all of the sophomores. I thoroughly enjoyed being that energetic role-model that the sophomores looked to throughout the weekend. It was an amazing experience for myself and as a result of the sophomores' personal growth, I grew as well. Being a staff member for the first time this past year has inspired me to contribute more to this seminar in the following years. I'm excited for what the future holds for NCYLS and the future sophomores that have yet to experience the impact of this seminar.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the way I treat my community, those around me, and myself. NCYLS has truly made a huge difference in my personality as I am more optimistic, enthusiastic, and willing to make a difference. I learn more and more about myself as I work with others to help this seminar happen.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
reach out to even more schools in order to expand the NCYLS family. In addition to that, reach out to all of those NCYLS alumni scattered all over California and remind them of the effects of this seminar.
I began NCYLS as a student. It has taught me life serving and changing attitudes. Everything I have gained from this seminar I have applied to my life. I became a staff member the following year after. I have had the pleasure to meeting my role model, best friend, and some of the most respected people I know. The tools this seminar explains how it allowed me to become and advocating leader of my fraternity and community. It also gave me the right abilities to be an elected official of a Government Affairs Council, also a $30 million dollar Corporation. I have accomplished this and so much more at the age of 19. I owe my life to NCYLS.

I attended NCYLS as a sophomore participant in 2004, and have remained involved with the organization ever since! As a participant, I learned vital communication and leadership skills as well as the importance of giving back to my community. My self-esteem and communication skills increased greatly, and I met so many amazing people who have since become a second family. As a volunteer in every role from Team Leader to Operations Director to my current role, NCYLS has taught me organization and management skills that I apply every day to my "real" job.

NCYLS is a three day seminar that invites one sophomore student from every school in Northern California to attend. During the seminar the students do team building exercises, hear inspiring stories form community leaders, they work on public speaking, and do many activities aimed at making them become better leaders.
