April 10, 2013

I am a prostate cancer survivor that was fortunate to be diagnosed very early before the disease could metatasize . After surgery, my cancer has been in remission for eleven years. Consequently, I am trying to pay back my community for my good fortune by being a volunteer and speaker at health fairs, or churchs to make men aware of what they can do to be diagnosed early if they are in a high risk group. The NTxPCC's "Let's Talk on Tuesday" is the weekly session to learn about the latested news and where screenings are taking place in all of North Texas. NTxPCC sends me and other volunteers to events where we can educate men about Prostate Cancer so they can be aware of the danger of Prostate Cancer and be daignosed early if they are the one out of every six men to be cursed with disease.

My prostate cancer was diagnosed early and the action taken saved my life. Now, as a volunteer, I can pay back by helping men with this terrible disease understand that it is not a death sentence and to become educated to fight their prostate cancer. No one that has experienced our "Lets talk on Tuesday" sessions has left without expressing appreciation for the information and support they have received.

When I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer I though I had just recieved a death sentence. I knew nothing about PC or where to start to learn about the options available. I ended up having a prostatectomy followed by the bad side effects of incontence and impotence,

As a PC survivor, I am
obligated to share my experience with the newly diagnosed PC victims inorder to help them through the negative reactions so universal. As a NTxPCC volunteer we have access to the newest technology on our internet site and from the member of all the colialition in order to educated newly diagnosed victims of PC. Then they can decide with their doctors on what treatment is best in each man's case.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

In our "Talk on Tuesday" chats with so many newly diagosed PC victims, I have seen positive attitude changes in one or two hours of the meeting. Men leave with information they know will give them a realistic chance to live a normal life span with good quality of life and to survive PC. I also speak to some men's church groups. My access to NTxPCC's latest information improves the audiance experience.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would make the existence of the "Let;s Talk on Tuesday" made known to every newly diagnosed PC victim, by advertising, getting more support from Doctors, and by public support like breast cancer has done with the Susan G. Komen campaign, but NTXPCC just does not have the resources.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

Increase the visibility of NTxPCC so more men could take advantage of the benefits being offered.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Every session as a volunteer is a learning experience. Each individual has a new problem to consider, every day brings new technology relevant to Prostate Cancer, and how every life decision affects our overall health.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Humble because I am so lucky to be an American with access to this health care system we have.

In its 4-th year of existence, North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition (NTxPCC) is looking forward to its 3rd annual prostate cancer symposium on April 20. After having been privileged to listen to Dr. Partin and Dr. Moyad, this year’s keynote speakers are Dave and Jan Dravecky. Dave is a former major league pitcher for the SF Giants who lost his pitching arm to cancer. Dave and his wife Jan are speaking about “Journeying through cancer together”.
One of NTxPCC’s activities is the “Let’s Talk on Tuesday … About Prostate Cancer” survivor chat where newly diagnosed and recurring survivors can talk face to face with long term survivors providing valuable information on their experiences, side effects and related issues.
Other activities last year included volunteer work during 30 special events, concentrating on awareness and education.
NTxPCC’s strength is an all volunteer organization with no funds used for salaries.

This is the third year of our existence. We are proud of the accomplishments in this time period through our participating volunteers.
We have earned the trust of related medical institutions reflected through invitations to their events and through financial assistance.
We earned the
respect of newly diagnosed men who are coming back to our let's Talk on Tuesday program and who are bringing other newly diagnosed. To quote one newly diagnosed: "When I found out that I will be talking to prostate cancer survivors, I knew through my experience with AA, that I am at the right place. They gave me more help than the doctors did". Well, we are not doctors, we provide information, but we do not give medical advice.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

receiving positive feedback from survivors we were able to talk to as well as from the and the general public about our accomplishments and programs.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

concentrate and spreading the word to doctors' offices who are dealing with prostate cancer.

The North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition, (NTXPCC), is founded by survivors , who are constantly working on improving the coalition, who's main aim is prostate cancer awareness and education. Newly diagnosed and survivors find informative answers to their many questions,
get help and support in coping with their personal issues related to prostate cancer, and find, that they, and their loved ones, are not alone.
The NTXPCC volunteers help at screening events, at health fairs, with the establishing of new support groups, and other events. At the Survivor chat meetings, the volunteers talk freely about their own cancer experience, including very personal effects of the cancer, and/or side effects of their treatments, etc. This allows especially the newly diagnosed men, (and their spouses), to talk openly about their concerns. The fact that NTXPCC is a survivor-based organization, gives the men a great feeling of empowerment and allows them to get help, while , at the same time, helping others!
Going to many meetings, as a survivor's spouse, I see how helpful the Coalition is to prostate cancer patients and their spouses, (like myself).
The NTXPCC's web site is very informative and an awesome source of helpful information, well organized!

As the wife of a prostate cancer survivor, I go to many of their meetings and programs. The men work tirelessly to improve prostate cancer awareness and education. They reach out to the newly diagnosed, giving them support by sharing their experiences. and by letting them know they are not alone! Another survivor's wife mentioned, that her husband's attitude toward his prostate cancer changed greatly, after they started coming to the survivor chat meetings. The fact, that the men talk freely about their cancer experience, including very personal effects of the cancer and/or side effects of their treatments, allows especially the newly diagnosed men, to talk openly about their concerns. The NTXPCC's web site is very informative and a great source of helpful information. The fact that NTXPCC is a survivor-based organization, gives the men a great feeling of empowerment and allows them to get help, while , at the same time, helping others!

observing survivor's contributions to others.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

expand the awareness not only to the general public but also to the medical professionals. Also, more volunteers are needed for this idea.

The North Texas Prostate Coalition is a very important Organization. W ether it is a person who wants to be screened, a newly diagnosed patient who longs for more information, or one with recurring disease, this coalition is an important source of information, and help for all. When helping as volunteers at the screenings, or attending meetings, as well as speaker events, (topics being prostate cancer and related topics"), it is rewarding to have people mention how good the work is that the Prostate Coalition is doing. It spreads the need for prostate cancer awareness, and information assistance. It has a great web site filled with up-to-date-information, and much more.

The North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition provides an important resource for men in the north Texas area who are diagnosed with prostate cancer. The coalition is mostly volunteers and most are men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. They have medical experts who guide their programming and web content. We are thankful for what this organization provides to our community.

The North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition is a group of individuals and organizations who are passionate about educating the community about prostate cancer, diagnosing it early and providing support to men and their families. Most of the leaders in the coalition are prostate cancer survivors or spouses of prostate cancer survivors. The organization members are health care providers and representatives of health care organizations who provide health care to prostate cancer patients in their community. The coalition strives to combine efforts to coordinate prostate cancer screenings, health fairs and educational events with the idea that combining efforts will achieve better outcomes.

The North Texas Prostate Cancer Coalition is an organization constructed from the ground roots by patients with a passion towards addressing the challenges of prostate cancer. The Coalition is independent of any organization and provides education and a forum for newly diagnosed patients as well as survivors. They are a very fair minded group basing their information on science. I would highly recommend this group to any men (or their family) seeking information on the evolving topic of prostate cancer especially in this time of conflicting reports.

I hope they continue to grow with a broad base of medical advisers and can become a voice in the community in a time that funding and screening for prostate cancer and research is in jeopardy.

I am very thankful that I found this organization after my recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. They have a warm and caring staff that helped me to understand a lot about my diagnosis as well as the different treatment options that were available to me. Their resource center provided an encouraging and knowledgeable setting for me to explore my options and to ultimately make an informed decision for my treatment. I have continued to attend weekly "Let's Talk" group sessions to discuss various issues and concerns that I have had. My wife and I have been greatly encouraged by attending the "Man to Man" support meetings each month. As a member, we are encouraged to share our personal experience with others and to reach out and welcome newly diagnosed men with prostate cancer. It has been very rewarding to know that I don't have to go through this journey alone. Lastly, I feel that the support and encouragement I have found at NTPCC has been a vital part of my healing and recovery process.

The NTPCC is an excellent resource of information that includes listings of the current status of multiple procedures available and those on the horizon. Also included is information regarding the multiple prostate support groups in the DFW area. I have found it helpful for educational purposes and as a means of obtaining speakers for my PC support group. Considerable time is spent in keeping this web site available and up to date. I recommend this as a must read site.

As a PCa survivor, I have been using this website for several years now. The ntxpcacoalition.org is a great resource for men who are trying to find local support groups and solid information and education about PCa. The articles featured about PCa are chosen largely because they reflect new information or insights that may be missed by the " general media informed " survivor. Many thanks should go out to this website manager for the great job he is doing. A lot of men's lives are made better due to the information and even encouragement they receive as a result of this website. My personal thanks as well. Way to go !
