This is a phenomenal organization that seeks to meet the needs of people in crisis in very caring, thoughtful, and creative ways. The staff and volunteers are concerned only with helping people through a crisis in a way that is beneficial and preserves their dignity. The Community Auto program that takes donated cars, fixes them up and sells them at minimal cost to people/families who need a source of transportation is an example of how the NHCO understands the basics for helping people achieve independence and add quality to their lives--a car may allow someone to take a better job, and allow children to participate in extracurricular activities.

It is truly amazing to see the passion and dedication of the volunteers who work so hard to help their neighbors. The staff is professional, knowledgable and focused in the effort and the combination of staff & volunteers make for an amazingly effective organization. I am pround to be associated with NHCO and fully support the mission.

I have been involved with NHCO for over 20 years. When I started there were only three employees working for the cause, Diane, current Director of Operations, being one of them. Now we have thirty and they all do such a great job. At each board meeting we learn of a new project to help those in need. All of the thirty employees and the many volunteers should be praised for all they do for those who have been helped by their efforts.

NHCO is a gem of an organization and I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to serve on various committees and as a Board Member over the past 5+ years. I'm truly amazed at the devotion and effectiveness of the Exectutive Director and staff as they work towards their mission. We are very fortunate to have such an organization in our community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
get them more money as they are extremely efficient with stretching the dollar with little overhead, and more effective then government entities.
At the time that I joined the Board of NHCO, I was on many Boards and involved in lots of community activities. I sought out NHCO (versus the reverse) because of their grass roots approach and neighbor to neighbor assistance. I live within the geographic footprint of NHCO and very much like the idea that the organization is helping my neighbors. While my family supports non-profits serving non-US folks with food and medical care, I also like supporting an organization that is helping other Pittsburghers with day to day issues like food, utilities, housing, jobs, transportation, etc.
It is a great organization that uses all donations-- money and in-kind-- to the maximum extent. Which means that if you donate to NHCO, you know every dollar is being stretched to the most. In 30 years in the business and non-profits communities, I have never seen an organization "work" in-kind donations the way NHCO does. It is a great tribute to the executive director and staff but means maximum help to people in our community.
I am proud to be on the NHCO Board.

Increase its funding to increase the programs it can offer to the community.
NHCO is a wonderful organization of "people helping People" and a blessing to the community that it serves! The executive Director, staff and volunteers all work so hard to make sure that our neighbors in crisis and hardship are provided for and cared for with such dignity that many who are helped find a way to give back when things get better for them. NHCO provides Food Pantries, Free Rides to Seniors, utility and housing assistance, holiday sharing projects, back-to-school supplies for children, just to name a few servies. I feel honored to be associated with NHCO over the past 10 years as volunteer, board member and donor.

working on the board and seeing first hand how NHCO's services have helped flood victims during the 2 major floods in 2004 and 2006. I've also read some of the "thank you" letters and feedback from the clients that have been helped.

work harder to spread the word about this wonderful organization and the many services NHCO provides. I would increase the appeal to individuals and businesses to please support NHCO.
I have been involved with NHCO for over 5 years, first on a committee to raise capital funds for a satellite office in Millvale, PA, then as a board member. NHCO is a well-run organization with dedicated & caring staff as well as generous volunteers. The Executive Director and staff are good stewards of the resources (funds, in-kind gifts, volunteer hours, etc.) that are given to the organization to help our neighbors in crisis and need.

These range from food pantry, utility and housing assistance, flood recover assistance, free rides for seniors, school supplies, holiday toys and winter coats, to a program called "Community Auto" that provides low cost cars to individuals in need.

Increase its visibility within the area of northern Allegheny County where NHCO provides help and services. Also, NHCO needs additional support from the business community within the area.

NHCO is a terrific organization. To put it crisply...the organization takes care of people! The staff and volunteers help in so many ways, transportation, food, clothing, support, advice, utilities, housing, etc. etc. It is amazing. Another important aspect is that the organization helps people feel good and get back on their feet. I am proud to be a supporter and Board Member for NHCO

Look to see more publicity about the great works of NHCO...so others in need unsure of where to go can find NHCO
NHCO is a local grass roots organization helping people in crisis in many important ways to the communities north of the Allegheny River. The staff provides resources for families in need through various programs such as food pantries, utility and rent assistance, job search and interviewing skills, and low cost auto purchases among other things to help clients to become self sufficient. The staff is extremely dedicated and compassionate in their efforts to provide these services. Through the vision of the Executive employees and Board members, NHCO has increased it's funding sources and therefore aid to the local community over the past several years. I could not be prouder to be a member of this amazing team in helping the communities in my local area.

I've personally witnessed the life changing effect that NHCO's services have made in clients lives through hearing a single mom's testimony of how a college grant changed her families life and another client's story of how receiving a low cost car had changed their life by allowing one of the parents to retain a full time job. There are countless letters that have been written by clients thanking NHCO for their compassionate services in helping to make a positive change in their lives.

There is very little that I would change about NHCO due to the amazing dedication, vision, and compassion that the staff and board members have used to transform and aid the local community. As treasurer, I would like to see the organization make a commitment to raising an endowment to aid in securing a reliable funding source for the future.
