They are growing from an individual run organisation to a professional organisation by hiring good staff. NDS is now doing professional fundraising and trying to scale. The passion is there with Ruma. She needs to improve her organisational skills or bring in a new CEO or COO. It will help to pay staff better and start charging the beneficiaries for the services provided. Overall NDS is a good NGO and I will recommend donating to NDS.

I met Ruma when we wanted to expand our disability programme in East Delhi and UP. The first thing that woud strike any one and so it was for me too, her energy!! Beginning really small with her 'call for action'she has expanded her organisation to reach out to the a number of deaf people whose faces shine when they 'talk' to her.

i met ruma nearly 3 years back & then one day i went ot see her training centre in noida. what amazed me was the complete silence in the training centre, but bustling with life with the hearing and speech students .the other noticeble aspect of this centre was that the space was optimally used and the students were learning computing skills and i saw the outcome of the campaign that they had developed for NIIT. ITC Welcomgroup has sourced many of her trainees and they are performing well inspite of the odds that they face , thanks to her excellant inputs. i wish noida deaf society all the best

I have personally been engaged with Noida Deaf Society for last 3 years and have seen them grow. Phenomenal growth to say the least. I started with a simple idea of how IT can help the deaf leverage their inherent skills. Since their visual sense is hightened - we introduced the graphics/desktop plublishing training. NDS is unique in the way they take care of the volunteers, ensure learning transfer to its own students. Over the last three years three batches of the DTP course have run (one year course). In the process many deaf youth have been gainfully employed, trainers have been created and most importantly engagement with corporate world has opened up a new world for the deaf. Parallely, other IT courses got formalized and strength of students grew from a mere 30 to now 300 -- fastest I have seen for an NGO that is almost being run single-handedly. Amazing part is that the existing resources are being leveraged to the maximum, technology is being used at all areas from administration to training delivery, and students are coming by word of mouth -- there is no explicit marketing done.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

We have hired 6 of the deaf students trained by NDS. They have now been working with us successfully in our international e-learning business. They have demonstrated high professionalism (NDS continues mentoring and support to the deaf employed with us)

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Constant innovation with courses and methods of teaching even under very difficult situations. NDS' untiring efforts to place the students is heartwarming to see.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Be a true lighthouse for deaf training in India. They need to have space for runnning their courses for more students and resources for courseware creation. They already have the know-how to build capacity amongst the deaf.

Ways to make it better...

All soft-skills training were documented and available for use by others.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

1. Insufficient space for training and development 2. Funding for sustainable organization development and wide impact - like creating courseware.

One thing I'd also say is that...

This is one of a kind not-for-profit -- a role model for spirit and passion with which the organization is driven.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the times when the two members had just joined in and the cooperation that we had got from the Deaf society to train these agents was commendable.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase the manpower there.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I really enjoy working with these agents as the observation and learning abilities of these agents in very very strong.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

excellent...

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

financially help these agents.

Ways to make it better...

I was able to go the society and learn the language to communicate to these agents easily.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

financial limitations.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The families of these agents do not accept them earlier but as they start earning these families go behind them for money. The organization must also take care and help these agents for financial understanding and investments for therer future growth.

I have had the opportunity of visiting the NDS school and interacting with the students. What was noteworthy was that while I was there, a few students had come to be enrolled from as far away as Meerut. I was amazed to see the ready response of the staff and the eagerness of all students to show me all that they could do with computers. I could see the great joy in all the students, even though there was a space constraint;there was an eagerness to learn. NDS needs more staff and space tp realise its goals of education and recruitment to all those that come to them.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The dedication and faith of the staff and Director.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Selfless in their mission.

Ways to make it better...

I could in some way be associated on a regular basis.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Space constraint. NDS is at present working out of 2 premises that are not enough for the large and growing number of students.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The dedication of the Director is inspiring. She dons many hats and doubles up as office assistance, staff member, event organiser....

One woman with a generous heart and strong determination changed the lives of so many deaf and hard of hearing youth. Not through pity or simpathy but through empowerment and re-education. Noida Deaf Society is a place so inspiring and the a model of how to let deaf and hard of hearing people participate and contribute to Indian society by treating them equally. I wish every city in India and the world have a place like Noida Deaf Society.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Students from Gallaudet University worked as interns at Noida.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

none at this time for Noida but wish the Indian government can assist by changing the education system for all deaf and hard of hearing students. All deaf students need visual language and must have teachers who are educated and train to teach using visu

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The empowerment and positive energy exude by the leader and students

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Professional, generous and believe that "the only thing deaf people cannot do is hear..".

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Provide opportunities for all deaf and hard of hearing youth in India to receive equal access to education, higher education and quality jobs. All deaf people in India will be fluent trilingual, native language, English and Indian Sign Language.

Ways to make it better...

was perfect. Noida made the best with the limited resources they had

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

There are more demands than supply. Noida are bombarded with high demand for it's service and need to have more agencies like Noida helping the deaf and hard of hearing youth who left schools without proper education and training.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Thank God for Noida and I hope their work continues

In my experience of being associated with the development sector for close to 9 years now, I have come across organizations, with a heart, with a vision& teams that work hard to realize their dreams. While Noida Deaf Society has all of this, it has another unique gift, which I have hardly come across in any other organization- & that is a soul! It is gifted with a zeal, a spirit that makes it a go- getter& is blessed with a team (including the Head of the organization) that has its core values intact! A rare combination of grit& compassion& that is what Noida Deaf Society is!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the changes in the youth associated with them- the quality of training& efforts of the team have helped many deaf youth find employment opportunities

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Mobilize resources so that they can hire more people& reach out to many more deaf youth, who need them

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the positive energy level of everybody associated with them

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Self motivated, with a single focus of supporting deaf youth, so that they can avail opportunities in life

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

diversify the number of courses/training options, hire quality trainers, to many more, thus building bridges for many more dreams of youth. Provide sponsorships, build a bigger centre, which will be a hub for many more opportunities

Ways to make it better...

I would be a full- time team member

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial constraints& thereby unable to do more, for the benefit of more youth

One thing I'd also say is that...

Noida Deaf Society is a dream come true for many young minds

I have worked with Ruma Roka for several years and have seen how her positive energy and unselfish efforts have resulted in educational and training opportunities for thousands of deaf people in Noida an Delhi neighborhoods. NDS has done more in a short time with less than most big organizations do not achieve. I hope its efforts are recognized by your organization resulting in NDS growing more and, thus, helping more deaf people. Madan Vasishta Associate Professor Gallaudet Universty Washington, DC 20002

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Involvement of deaf people in decision making. Respect for their language and culture. Personal level involvement by the CEO with everyone involved. Getting employment for deaf people.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have everyone, including business manager, learn sign language and communicate with deaf people in NDS

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Friendly and supportive environment.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Friendly, encouraging and open to input as well as criticism.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Train a million deaf people and place them in appropriate jobs with their hearing peers.

Ways to make it better...

Addition of a service delivery outlet ( like Kinkos) that can help training deaf people in real life setting and helping them move on to mainstream jobs.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of space. The increasing number of students and trainees requires larger and appropriate space. The present crowded classroom in a converted flat are inadequate.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The growing pains leading to some unrest within the organization needs to be addressed quickly.

I was fortunate enough to be involved in the great activity of enabling deaf and dump human beings to stand on their on feet and earn fame and respect as any other person does. The two members of this society were employed in my office and frankly speaking I was a bit apprehensive as to how we will co ordinate with them on daily activities and that work would suffer. But I was wrong and surprised to see that the two kids were very well trained to over come their short comings and were well groomed by the society to work efficiently like any one of us. They at times surpressed the bench marks set for any one of us and I feel delighted and congratulate the Noida Deaf Society on ensuring that all its members are well trained and groomed to be part of this world like any one of us is.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the way its members are trained and groomed to take on the responsibility put on thier shoulder. They were excellent in their conduct and extremely disciplined about the their area of functioning. They were very capable human beings and worked very hard
