I was walking in the park when an intern from NMRWA noticed me taking photos and realized I had been emailing my photos for them to do with as they wished. About 5 years later I find myself on their Board and actively participating in furthering their mission of educating and advocating for the local stream and wetland ecosystem. What a great asset to the city of Pittsburgh!

NMRWA has been so generous with my children's school, Pittsburgh Urban Christian School, in Wilkinsburg. They spent a lot of time consulting with us about the possibility of installing a rain garden in our backyard. Then, when we decided to move forward, but had not received the needed grant money, they donated time, plants, and the use of their tools to assist us with the rain garden install. At every juncture, the staff working for NMRWA has been professional, helpful, and informative. A special thank you to Sarah and Paul!

NMRWA is an amazing little nonprofit. I am continually impressed and grateful for the talented staff, volunteers, and board members whom they attract. They have done incredible work monitoring the quality of the stream water and the success of the NMR watershed ecosystem restoration, but beyond that, they are engaging the community to take real ownership of this incredibly precious urban green space. I am excited by their goals for the coming years and confident that they will meet challenges with the same creativity and dedication that has brought them to where they are over the past 10 years. Stormwater management and the development of green infrastructure are absolutely critical for our region--NMRWA is well-positioned to become a regional leader through evidence-based advocacy and proven demonstration projects. As Pittsburgh continues to rediscover the ground under our feet and learns to appreciate the natural beauty of our region, NMRWA is a model for how to heal what our industrial past damaged.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

regular visits to the restoration area. In a few short years a stinking creek and sewage-strewn fields has become a growing landscape of wetlands and meadows of native trees and plants.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

learning about the landscape under my nose, and getting connected with other people who really care about where we live and healing it for future generations.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, kind, fun, motivated, knowledgeable, engaged, thoughtful, and just generally fabulous.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

complete the Regent Square Gateway Project, create an endowment for the organization, get started as a provider/coordinator of Stormwater Management Services.

I have been an enthusiastic supporter of the restoration and maintainence of the stream and wetland aquatic ecosystem known as Nine Mile Run for the past 5 years and became a Board member because I wanted to increase my level of involvement for a place that I care about deeply. This organization works hard to educate the public about their connection to the environment and that their actions matter and that we all can make a difference.
