In 2007, I became Education Director for this company. Previously, I was offered a role with the company but due to personal problems, I had to drop out of the play and get my life together. Most other companies would have blacklisted me, but when I told the artistic director about my problems, she embraced me, gave me another chance and hired me to be the Education Director. No one else believed in me at this time in my life, but this company helped me get back on my feet. As a disabled person and artist I have grown immensely because of my involvement in Nicu Spoon. Since then I have built an education program where we do a kids show every year. Currently, we are embarking on our fourth show, which servesall people and kids with disabilities. Our program utlizes people of all abilities, but serves playwrights, actors and audience members who are disabled. We mix the disabled and abled world, thereby eradicatibng booundaries that often separate disabled people. This company has helped many of us find the abilty in disability and has pushed me ton become better as a person, administrator, and artist

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

get us a paid staff which would increase our ability to reach a larger audience and make a bigger impact

Nicu's Spoon is a wonderful company. It is umbelievable how they offer so much opportunities to actors to work, and plays that deals with disability as well. Twice I was part of 2 plays that had actors working as ASL interpreters and when they are not onstage they are signing for deaf audience. A theater company that cast disable actors, they heard our voices, they give us opportunities to work and show our work to other people, they don't judge and never cast what is easy, they take chances, they give voices to the unheard. I could not be happier to write about them. Hope people find out what this company do for people that society sometimes judges and don't give chances. Because they are unique and special and deserve to get recognizable.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would help them get recognizable, because they struggle to keep their space and money issues.

I am always amazed at how they treat the audience like family- accomidating every need and greeting you with your name and hugs- they remember everyone! They find the spark of joy in each person they meet and that is due to their director Stephanie Barton-Farcas

The Great!

Like my wife I am astounded that nobody in NYC serves the populations this theater serves. They search out the neglected, ignored and underserved and help them to create art!

I started as a Board Member at the very beginning and have stayed one mainly because of the creativness and the fun this group seems to have not only with the plays. but for each other. There are all kinds of actors, actresses (handicapped and non-handicapped), volunteers, electricians, musicians and any body else you can think of in this bunch. Only see one play, any play)this company does and you'll be hooked at the versatility and the joy they have among them!

The Great!

all the plays they've ever done.

I never wanted to be too active in much after my children graduated from college. Then I was introduced to NICU'S SPOON THEATER GROUP. I am think they are a wonderful group of young/old/disabled/funny/able bodied/talented people I have come across in a long, long while. Go to just one of their plays and you'll see what I mean!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

watching the diversity of the group

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fun, funny, hard working, dedicated and very, very talented

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

pay utility bills and buy props and costumes

Ways to make it better...

I could have given them money

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

not enough time for them to do all they want to do and not enough money to do it

One thing I'd also say is that...

just go see one of their plays, it'll say it all......such talented people!

Stephanie Barton-Farcas has had a long-standing commitment to inclusion with the productions she oversees as Nicu's Spoon's Artistic Director. * Shows are chosen, actors are cast, and performances are directed based on acting ability, not on any personal disability (real or perceived) that someone (an actor and/or his/her role) might have. * Nicu's Spoon also regularly provides American Sign Language (ASL)-interpreted performances of the shows they produce. ...and none of this would happen without Stephanie's vision and commitment.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

interacting with Deaf actors and patrons while they participate or attend Nicu's Spoon shows.
