Mission: Our mission: To protect wildlife and our environment and to build future conservation leaders by engaging youth in environmental stewardship projects worldwide. Our vision: We envision that all young people will take personal responsibility and action toward protecting wildlife and the environment in their communities through NWP projects, and that these inspired youth volunteers will become the next generation of conservation leaders worldwide. Our values :  * Youth volunteers become leaders when they are given the freedom to identify and solve environmental problems on their own.  * Wildlife and the environment benefit from litter cleanups, native tree plantings, nonnative plant removal, and community recycling programs.  * Young people develop leadership skills and confidence, which helps them become responsible citizens, when they are empowered to make a difference.  * Stewardship of the environment, for the benefit of wildlife and communities, requires long-term commitment from concerned citizens.
Results: As of April 2010, * NWP Youth Volunteers = 17,781 * Total Hours Volunteered = 119,213 * Number of Countries Represented = 133 * Trash Removed/Recycled (kg) = 127,192 * Native Trees Planted = 83,648 * Area Restored for Wildlife (hectares) = 11,616
Target demographics: Kids, teens, and college-age students with an emphasis on youth from 13 to 21 years old.  We also have special programs for at-risk and disadvantaged youth.
Direct beneficiaries per year: About 5,000
Geographic areas served: United States and International
Programs: The Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™ (officially recognized by the U.S. EPA) has engaged thousands of young people (kids, teens, and college-age youth) from around the world in environmental cleanup and conservation projects since 1999. The goals of the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™ are to: * Elevate youth into leadership roles by engaging them in environmental cleanup and conservation projects, * Empower young volunteers to rebuild the environmental and social well-being of our communities, * Improve local living conditions for both citizens and wildlife through education, activism, and action.

I appreciate the actions that this organization takes towards motivating and empowering young persons to make an difference in their environment - through education and promotion of action. I am happy to have come across this organization, and to be a part of it. I came across this organization due to a scholarship that this organization made available to young persons who lead a project of their own. It inspired me to take further action in assisting the environmental conditions of my community. I was grateful for the opportunity granted by this organization.

The Nicodemus Wilderness Project is a wonderful way to become more aware of the environment and involved in conservation! This organization builds awareness, advocates conservation, teaches people how to live greener lives and do their part to keep the environment green, and more. Some examples of promoting conservation by this organization include selling environmentally friendly socks and Ecologist Apprentice projects. I became an Ecologist Apprentice, which was a great experience for me, as I learned much about the environment while working to keep it clean. Another reason this is an excellent organization is because it demonstrates how anyone can make a difference and it encourages people to get involved. The Nicodemus Wilderness Project truly makes a positive difference to the environment.

my experience is always great. i feel like a new person every time i leave piedra lisa open space. Nicodemus does a wonderful job at making sure all of its volunteers are up to date, fed and hydrated, and have the proper supervision during the work.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

several ways. first of all, there always seems to be good participation amongst the community and the world to make a difference. second of all, everyone always seems to be happy and renewed after helping out the environment and doing it for a good cause.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

their great communication and amazing motivation to get kids involved

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful, kind people that enjoy life and volunteerism that is noticeably contagious to all that get together for a project.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

not make a difference. volunteerism is priceless and doesn't need money to succeed.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every six months

After meeting project directors Rob and Yih-Ming, I have continued to donate to this project and to share it with others through the classes I teach. Each year I receive incredible progress reports of the amount of inner city students the Project is now bringing in to the Sandia Mts to clean up and to learn about nature. I am a professor in Maryland and someday hope to hike those same trails with my granddaughters, dragging out own bags of collected debris. WHAT A MARVELOUS CONCEPT...THE NEXT GENERATION AND CITY KIDS EMBRACING WILDLIFE AND RIVERS.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

a visit I made in 2003 to see the trails and to see the progress in the area that had been de-trashed and hiked.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Following its growth in the monthly reports, colorful, detailed, and growing!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

in love with their work and living their own ecological friendly lives.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Organize and transport thousands of inner-city students and train leaders to run summer camps in this marvelous and vast area; to learn of water management, of wildlife and nature values...to educate for the future of the planet.

Ways to make it better...

I had been able to travel there in person and participate with the camp kids. It is my hope to do so in the future.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

One thing I'd also say is that...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About once a year

At the end of your day you know you made a difference and NWP (Nicodemus Wilderness Project) organizes and brings everything together to make it a positive experience.
