My experience with Newark Public Radio, Inc. began in November 1984 when I began doing fundraisers on a regular basis; the first person I met was Rhonda Hamilton. As always, WBGO had been going through constant reorganization and my participation with them was an outgrowth of a hobby of mine--collecting jazz memorabilia; I grew up in a musical family in Brooklyn. Besides jazz, I really love the news and public affairs programming and it has been an augment to my formal education. The many people and positive experiences that I have still remain with me to this day. Anthony Brown

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

not only live concerts and events, but as an outreach to the community at large. It has transcended many communities as a bridge to peoples' lifestyles and has created a healthy exchange of experiences in many public forums and civil milieu.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would like to see more participation from museums, educational and cultural institutions and to make it more of an intergenerational milieu. There should be more of a hands-on approach to public broadcasting and to have more internships available.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

It gave me a new passion in life--understanding the invaluable role of public media (NPR) in American society and how this is an example of a participatory democracy where everyone has a role in it; becoming more of a lifelong learner and a citizen.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

People who were well rounded and had lives outside of public media. Being passionate about the contribution of jazz not only in American society but throughout the world.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

form a stronger alliance with organizations such as The Jazz Foundation of America and Jazz at Lincoln Center. To enlighten more young people about the NEA Jazz Masters program and the IAJE; to provide support for musicians in an educative environment.

Ways to make it better...

I would have known about the innovations in new media such as mobile, interactive and digital and as a complement to my university education. Being more active in the global village of communications and social media. Anthony Brown

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Maintaining the high quality of programming without sacrificing or compromising its standards and to remain true to the mission statement at all times. Also, finding new sources of revenue on a consistent basis in addition to new audiences.

One thing I'd also say is that...

WBGO will always be relevant in society, no matter what the changes in media landscape reflect. The sincerity, candor and honesty of the people who make their living performing and disseminating the organid artform known as jazz.

I had been a sometime listener to WBGO for many years and participated in occasional benefits that were sponsored by the station; but once CD 101.9 was eliminated I became an AVID listener. I am pleasantly amazed and proud to state that this station has provided culture, sophistication and CLASS to a sometimes to often; Bleak Outlook on Newark.

Newark Publick Radio (WBGO) has devoted itself to keeping the link between jazz and the community strong. Their dynamic programming is always entertaining and their on air hosts are tremendously knowledgeable. I am both entertained and educated by what they have to offer. It's a great, great station that I intend to support as a volunteer and a member.
