After more than 25 years of business success in banking, commercial real estate, computer development, and operation of a 20-store convenience store chain, they have devoted themselves to New York City Relief since its inception in 1989.
NYCR was officially launched on January 17, 1990. NYCR now has eight full-time staff members who each raise a large portion of their own financial support.
NYCR"s vision is simple: to help people. NYCR seeks to achieve the following goals:
7 To bring hope and help to the homeless and disadvantaged of New York City and Elizabeth, New Jersey
7 To partner with and serve other organizations serving those in need
7 To train and release the faith community into volunteer service in our region"s most desperate neighborhoods
Programs: NYCR serves disadvantaged communities in Metro New York and New Jersey through two programs.
7 The Street Connection Mobile Resource Center A converted school bus that contains a food service unit and counseling/referral office to serve locations in New York City.
7 The Hope Center - A new program which operates as a fixed location, community resource center to serve the City of Elizabeth and Union County, New Jersey.
The heart of what NYCR's programs do is provide individualized case management and service coordination that offers the homeless and disadvantaged emergency food as well as access to a continuum of resources. Our team interacts with persons in need, assesses their situation, and makes an appropriate referral to a community resource that will offer additional assistance.
In each community we serve, NYCR partners with programs that are established and effective in the neighborhood/community. Working together, we are able to provide community-based services to our clients.
The population that we serve is mostly men, although there is a growing population of women and children facing homelessness. The ages span from teens to the elderly.
We exist to help people in immediate need of food, but, more importantly, to help connect them to resources and programs that will bring real change in their lives. We also serve the working poor, substance abusers, and anyone in need of assistance on the streets.
