New Hope For Neighborhood Renewal

2710 Shadeland Avenue Pittsburgh PA 15212 USA

The vision of New Hope for Neighborhood Renewal is to “renew the Marshall-Shadeland neighborhood where the laughter of youth and families echoes the hope they experience every day. The renewal focuses on three areas: education, training and employment for youth, housing for economically challenged families and neighborhood development through social enterprise.

The S.T.E.P. program  (Students Trained Equipped and Prepared) is for high school juniors and seniors who complete an application and interview process and commit to the attendance requirements of this valuable program.  It was created in response to the findings of Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu's book entitled Reducing the Black Male Drop Out Rate that 55-65% of African American students leave college within their first year due to cultural challenges unrelated to academic ability.   Time management and study skills, intercultural communication, diversity and reconciliation and servant leadership in community development are a few of the subjects that the students cover. They also visit various universities and trade schools as they investigate their own plans for the future.  The goal is to prepare these urban students to meet the challenges of higher education and equip them to  thrive in the college environment.

Rating: 4 stars

New Hope for Neighborhood Renewal makes a difference in the Marshall Shadeland neighborhood by providing mentoring for students, providing a community garden space and by purchasing a nuisance bar and transforming it into the Cafe 'n Creamery where families can relax and enjoy ice cream and gourmet coffee in a safe and welcoming atmosphere. Check it out!
