I have worked with NatureServe, and its network of natural heritage experts in positions I have held in three separate states, in university research, private sector and state government roles. In all cases, I turned to NS to get the highest quality, most current, data and information on whatever species or natural community I was working to protect. They always had it, in one place, available via smart on-line map- and database-driven tools. NatureServe will undoubtedly continue to gain recognition as the most comprehensive source for the highest quality data on all rare species and habitats in the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

-threatened and endangered species-related field research -drafting various NEPA documents -conducting GIS-based research to conserve rare species/habitats -various needs for general data and information sharing via direct communication or the web

Want answers -- get data. And get data based on actual evidence. From human health care to health of the environment, quality information is vital for sound decision making. The better the data, the better the outcome. NatureServe is the nation's leading conservation data support non-profit. Full stop. They provide some of the best diagnostics to the conservation community --- from the non-profit community to government managers to the general public.

There is no finer group of scientists and data managers out there. NatureServe provides many services and professional expertise to the scientific community. The history of standard and methods for 35+ years makes this the best there is.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping our agency prioritize conservation, reasearch, and also in providing data to federal partners and others needing multi-jurisdictional data for projects.

The work done by NatureServe is important. In particular, global ranking is a valuable metric when choosing where to spend scarce conservation dollars. Also, the push toward a standardized methodology facilitates the synthesis of information from multiple states and provinces and makes analysis of multi-jurisdicational projects more feasible.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

dissimination of information through NatureServe Explorer.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

provide more funding for technology updates and more staff.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the willingness of NatureServe staff to provide support to and facilitate communication between heritage programs from all across North America.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic and dedicated to the protection of biodiversity.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

upgrade to more modern software tools, develop new tools and methods for scientific data collection, and improve the way biodiversity concerns shape public policy.

Ways to make it better...

the database management tools necessary for maintaining the data were modernized.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding and the difficulties inherent in working with many different programs across numerous jurisdictions.

Naturserve's rankings of species and ecosystems form the backbone of our rankings for the BC Conservation Framework, which provides direction and priorities for conservation activities in British Columbia. Without the dedication and commitment of this ENGO to this hightly credible and continuingly improved system, the basic core of our program would not be credible. Kudos to the entire program!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

by working with the outputs of thier program on a nearly daily basis.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to find the resources to maintain their programs and expand it to include the marine environment, and allow them to update their assessments more frequently. In an era of climate change frequent risk assessments would be a valuable monitoring tool.

NatureServe provides an invaluable service to the biological diversity conservation community. There is no other entity that can provide the data and expertise on rare and declining flora and fauna. Without NatureServe's leadership, conservation of many at-risk species would be further jeopardized.

NatureServe is an invaluable resource for conservation biologist in North America. It is a central clearinghouse for data, but it also provides expertise, works to standardize methodology so data can be easily comparded, and is an important driver in determining the directions of continuing research.

I think NatureServe is an excellent organization, and has been a leader in science-based conservation in North America. The organization's combination of science-based methodology development with excellent technology tools makes it one of the true innovators in the environmental movement - they are the high tech organization for conservation in North America and perhaps beyond.

NatureServe is an invaluable coordinator for biodiversity data. With strict data standards, member programs from all U.S. state, Canandian provinces, and several countries around the world can share data to evaluate local, regional, national, and global biodiversity needs. But they also allow for certain flexibility for individual member programs to work within their own financial, political, and prioritization structures. The spatial database and onging technological advances and projects (handheld data collection software, observational database, sharepoint, climate change vulnerability index tool, etc.) keeps this organization at the forefront of conservation.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Coordinating with adjacent states for an evaluation of regional biodiversity needs; attending conferences and trainings which provide opportunities for cross-pollination of conservation ideas; use of climate change vulnerability index tool.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

It's willingness to work with us even with certain constraints we imposed to their normal data sharing structure.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Outgoing, dedicated, optimistic, helpful

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Do amazing scientific research, develop state-of-the-art technological advances for the people on the ground working for environmental conservation
