The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education provides teachers with real and effective strategies to reach each every student in their classroom. The focus is on building student competence and confidence through strategies that give students voice in their learning and cognition. They have helped us make gains in closing the achievement gap.

The NUA team and all they have to offer has had a significant impact on our work with students. The NUA has helped us have the tools to effectively support all children grow academically and deepen their connections and engagement with others and school. The NUA helps us understand the
process of learning while focusing on students strengths. They have helped us shift from a deficit model to a growth model. In the past 5 years of partnering with the NUA our districts academic scores have continued to rise as we attempt to eliminate achievement gaps. The NUA is one of the primary reasons that we have had ongoing success. The NUA has helped us begin to achieve our goal to ensure the learning for all children.

The National Urban Alliance for Effective Education’s fundamental belief is that all children can learn. This alliance uses research-based methods to unlock the potential in all children by focusing on the their strengths. Through hands-on professional learning with teachers and students, NUA mentors teach and model the Pedagogy of Confidence by applying effective instructional strategies that promote high intellectual performances. In addition to promoting high intellectual performances, the professional learning incorporates social and cultural aspects as well. Teachers and students begin to utilize culturally responsive teaching as a way to master the course content and ultimately empower students and teachers to become lifelong learners. This dynamic alliance understands how to apply theories and weave them seamlessly into the mandated curriculum. Not only do the strategies work in the K-12 system, but they also work well in teacher preparation programs. The National Urban Alliance is needed throughout the country in order to eradicate the proverbial gap that has long plagued our educational system.

I would not make any changes to the organization. I wish that more school systems and teacher preparation programs would implement NUA's foundational beliefs.

National Urban Alliance provided effective instructional strategies for teachers. The teachers were given tools such as community builders, thinking maps and culturally relevant pedagogy. The work with NUA inspired teachers and students. We loved our coach. NUA helped to deepen the teaching and learning for those teachers involved. The leadership component for the administrators also helped to guide the strategies throughout the school

We have been in partnership with the National Urban Alliance at our school for seven years, and the benefits have been tremendous. I can't think of a partnership that has been more fruitful for our students and staff. The professional development offered through NUA has resulted in long-lasting and fundamental changes in teachers' practice at our school, which is not the case with all professional development experiences. Our work with NUA has been so meaningful not only because of its content but because of the commitment they've made toward high-quality, ongoing, in-depth coaching. I highly recommend the National Urban Alliance as a top-flight non-profit organization.

NUA provides outstanding professional development for educators. They understand student needs for engagement, higher order thinking skills, pedogogy that is research based, and all teaching strategies that improve student learning. In addition, the instructors and mentors are able to deliver those best practices to educators for immediate use in classrooms for the students.

National Urban Alliance for Effective Education is a fantastic organization that truly believes all students can reach their maximum potential on each of the following levels: academic, personal/social, and career. The organization promotes the use of effective instructional delivery and classroom practices that enable teachers to meet the needs of students across various cultures. Through a hands-on, continuous, research-based approach, National Urban Alliance spends time in the schools working collaboratively with classroom educators, students, and administrators to unlock the high intellectual performance all students have within them. I have seen students labeled as emotional disturbed and learning disabled go from a constant classroom disruption to being able to tell you which of the Thinking Maps should be used to explain the cause and effect of substances combined that produce a chemical reaction. Students have even led classroom instruction after collaborating with their teachers to develop a lesson. The keys to the success National Urban Alliance has experienced in the districts that have worked with the organization are the on-going, adult learning theory based support provided within the schools and district, the relevant, research-based professional development provided to staff and students, which is based on the unique characteristics of the students within each school, and the high level of commitment among the mentors with expertise in the field of education that deliver these services. National Urban Alliance for Effective Education has a proven record of success in several school districts throughout the United States.

As the grants director for a large urban school district, I was tasked with finding resources to assist students and teachers. When the opportunity came from the U. S. Department of Education to submit a grant to improve adolescent literacy, my district applied and won, becoming one of eight successful applicants for the first Striving Readers program competition on 2006. More than 300 districts applied for these funds and our identifying the National Urban Allicance for Effective Education (NUA) as a partner contributed to this major grant award. I was working on a tight timeline and was skeptical that we could identify a partner who could support our needs, have substance (not hype) and could help a non-educator understand their approach. I met with Dr. Ahmes Askia for only a few hours; she provided the NUA's approach and plan that was clear, concise and fully school and teacher friendly. NUA promised consultants who would plan with the district and provide ongoing professional development activities. They delivered. NUA promised that the consultants would be scholar practitioners who would incorporate the latest research on brain-based learning, cognition, and reasoning. They delivered. Even with changes in school leaders and teachers, the NUA was consistent in the quality of service delivery. Thus, a plan that could be understood by a non-educator, could be incorporated into a major grant, and the services received could be implemented well by educators. NUA delivered in all aspects and is an excellent organization that does what it promises.

The Striving Readers grant was funded for five-years bringing nearly $14 million to the school district. As a partner in the grant, the outcomes of the NUA's work was independently evaluated and contributed to the grant's continuation.

I've personally experienced the results of NUA in the implementation of the NUA Greene County Partnership initiative where teachers were guided by the strategies NUA provided and students were excited about ways of instruction that aligned to their needs and were motivated to learn.

I first became acquainted with the NUA when they provided professional development to teachers in my school. When I saw some of the educational strategies and heard about the educational practices from other teachers, I knew I wanted to learn more. I started professional development with NUA the next year and was able to put what I learned into practice. I saw first hand how the strategies helped all students learn and saw an increase in writing test scores after using rhyme, rhythm, and repetition to help my students learn how to write a 5 paragraph essay. The mentors and other professionals of NUA are committed to helping all students achieve to their highest potential. They provide research based strategies and support to help teachers achieve the goal of high student achievement. It is a strength based philosophy that works and everyone in the organization is professional, committed, and constantly working to improve educational opportunities for all children.
