NEADS, then the Hearing Ear Dog Program, was founded in 1976 to test the principle that like Guide Dogs for the blind, Hearing Dogs could be trained to assist people who are deaf or hard of hearing. In 1986, we expanded our services to train Service Dogs to assist people who are physically disabled and children living with autism. NEADS has trained nearly 1,000 Assistance Dog partners (person and dog) now living and working together in 31 states throughout the country.
NEADS is the oldest continuing Hearing Dog program in the country and the first program on the East Coast to train a Service Dog.
