In a time of financial distress many States turn to gambling and percieve it as a win/win situation, revenue for the state and entertainment for the citizens. That analysis does not take into account the effects of gambling on problem gamblers and pathological gamblers and in turn the effects on the community. The National Council on Problem Gambling advocates for the problem and pathological gambler while maintaining a neutral stand on gambling. It is the voice that calls for more research, public awareness, prevention and treatment for those plagued by gambling problems.. My involvement with The National Council has convinced me that our cause is important and not fulfilled by others. There needs to be a national voice speaking on behalf of pathological problem gamblers and their families. As an individual in long term recovery from a gambling problem I believe it is vital to have a national voice.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

chairing the National Problem Gambling Awarenmess Week campaign the last four years. This is an effort to raise awareness about problem gambling and to disseminate information about same. The support I recieve through the National Council and its membership is vital in calling attention to the ramifications of problem gambling on the individual, the family and the community.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to stress the need for a federal oversight of gambling. Right now this is done on a state by state basis and location should not determine the ability to get treatment for the gambling problem.

Most of what we hear about problem gambling is sensational, judgmental, and wrong. In reality, it is not evidence of moral weakness nor is it confined to those who are somehow different from us. It is a medical condition that is potentially devastating but very treatable.

The National
Council on Problem Gambling provides an accurate, unbiased view of this disorder that is not bound by anyone's moral or economic agenda. It advocates for those affected by problem gambling, trains the dedicated professionals working in the field, serves as a reliable source of information for the media, public officials, and others who seek to learn more, and provides a message of hope for those attempting to cope with this condition.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

more aggressively seek opportunities to tell the real story of problem gambling and those affected by it.

The National Council on Problem Gambling is the primary portal for issues related to problem and pathological gambling. As the primary advocate for individuals and families affected by gambling, the NCPG provides hope and help. With at least 35 state affiliates the NCPG is a network of concerned individuals and organizations that is neither for nor against gambling but who are concerned about the negative personal and social consequences of gambling.

NCPG is the only national organization with the primary focus of assisting individuals and families effected by problem and pathological gambling. NCPG works to raise the awareness of the public about problems related to gambling , advocate for legislation and policy that assists individuals with gambling problems and provides referrals for help for those who have a problem.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

working as a former board member, attending their annual clinical conference, and receiving referrals for treatment from them.
