Issues: Health, Human Services, Breast Cancer

Location: 2600 Network Blvd STE 300 Frisco TX 75034 USA

Mission: The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to save lives through early detection and to provide mammograms for those in need. Our mission includes increasing awareness through education, providing diagnostic breast care services for those in need, and providing nurturing support services.
Results: NBCF has provided over 340,000 patient services since 2005 through their network of hospitals. With rising healthcare costs, many uninsured or underinsured women cannot afford the cost of diagnostic tests. By providing free mammograms and breast care services to underserved women, NBCF will increase the early detection of breast cancer which will lead to higher survival rates. Facilities within the NMP continue to report that because of grant funding from NBCF, they are able to help women in their areas that did not qualify for state or local funds to access mammography services. Any life that is saved is an example of the success of the program. Based on findings about how breast cancer initiation cells can resist drug treatment, researchers are now developing clinical trials to suppress breast cancer initiation cells. Researchers have found that gene therapy delivered directly to a particularly stubborn type of breast cancer cell caused the cell to self-destruct, lowered the chance of recurrence, and helped increase the effectiveness of some types of chemotherapy.
Target demographics: Underserved and uninsured women
Geographic areas served: Throughout the United States
Programs: National Mammography Program/Patient Services Through the National Mammography Program (NMP), NBCF partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women. The NMP network includes 88 medical facilities in all 50 states. Through patient navigation programs at medical facilities within their network, NBCF is able to promote early detection procedures to those that need it most. Patient navigation is a proactive approach to helping patients overcome the barriers of cost, fear, and misinformation surrounding a disease and its prevention. Early Detection/Awareness Education NBCF’s Early Detection Plan is an interactive tool available both online and as an iPhone App. The Early Detection Plan reminds women to schedule routine breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms. MyNBCF (www.MyNBCF.org) is an online support community that has been described by its members as “an avenue to share, vent, cry and laugh.” The community provides breast cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones a safe place to discuss breast cancer. Beyond the Shock® is a step-by-step guide to understanding the diagnosis of breast cancer presented in an interactive online website. It allows those affected by breast cancer to learn about breast cancer, ask and answer questions, and hear inspirational stories from breast cancer survivors. The Breast Health Education Program is a new program launched in 2012 that provides breast cancer education and early detection services to women at community outreaches across the country. NBCF educates women about the importance of early detection and informs them about resources that are available in their community. Women are given the opportunity to receive free clinical breast exams from nurse practitioners. Breast Cancer Research NBCF strives to help find the cure for breast cancer by working with some of the finest scientists in the world. Funding is provided to MD Anderson Cancer Center, Cleveland Clinic, and Worldwide Innovative Networking for research efforts focused on targeted therapy for breast cancer initiating cells, therapeutic and preventative drugs for breast cancer, and the first clinical trial offering a choice of therapy guided by the biology to the majority of patients included in the study. Their goals are to identify and personalize cancer treatment to offer hope and healing to the countless women diagnosed each year.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has supported and funded the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program for years. NBCF’s contribution has provided mammograms for uninsured low income women in the Greater New Orleans area. NBCF funds have removed the financial barrier that prevents women from getting screened. The National Breast Cancer Foundation is a wonderful and pleasant organization to work with. Their application and reporting process is straightforward.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has been a wonderful blessing to our Hospital! They stepped forward to help us provide free sceenings to underserved women in our community--a growing and needly population! In addition, they've stepped forward to help fund other intiiatives that support that mission in tangible ways. Their staff is amazing and so personable. They are completely dedicated to the cause of breast cancer both professinally and personally and it shows! They are in themselves inspiring!

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is proud to call the National Breast Cancer Foundation a partner in the fight against cancer. The foundation’s dedicated staff are strategic and incredibly supportive, and as a result of their commitment to our mobile mammography program, we have been able to provide life-saving breast health education and screening to underserved women throughout the Boston area. It is a privilege to work with NBCF.

NBCF has been a client of Gannett's for 5+ years. They do amazing work to empower women to participate in early detection programs and offer important guidance through their after the shock programs. But what really captured my heart was how they provide to the underserved and underinsured women with special programs linked to hospitals in every state across the US. We are proud to have NBCF as our client and friend.

National Breast Cancer Foundation has supported mammography services for hundreds of breast imaging patients at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. The generosity removes financial barrier for women by covering the cost of screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms and ultrasound procedures.

NBCF funds also have allowed Parkland to add a highly qualified bilingual patient navigator to our patient services team. She helps provide a more seamless continuum of care for Parkland Breast Center patients. Her presence is helping reduce wait times for patients and significantly reduces the anxiety sometimes associated with medical procedures.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance have been fortunate to receive grant funding from the National Breast Cancer Foundation since 2007. In 2012 we were able to provide breast cancer screening services to over 800 women who didn't have insurance. The majority of patients are screened through SCCA's Mobile Mammography Van which works with community organizations and churchs to provide screening mammograms. Early detection has been proven to be a game changer in breast cancer survivorship. NBCF's funding has allowed us to make these life-saving exams avaialble to women in need throughout western Washington!

“Without the support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the SCCA would not be able to meet the screening needs of women regardless of their ability to pay. We know that early detection thorough screening saves lives. Last year we were able to expand our services to include much of the Puget Sound. We were able to provide mammography screening at many partner clinics, for many of the women screened; this was their first mammogram as adult woman.”
--Madeline Buelt MSN, RN, Vice President, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance

“Without the generous funding from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, many women in our region would not have access to life-saving mammograms. As a physician, I know that screening works but that access remains a key issue. We are so grateful to the NBCF for their support to eliminate barriers to healthcare.”

Professor & Vice Chair of Radiology, Section Head of Breast Imaging; University of Washington

Our organization’s commitment to enhance the quality of life and raise breast health awareness for the people we serve is made possible with the generous support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation! Since our partnership, more than 4,000 uninsured and underserved women in Oakland County have received free mammogram screenings. In the last year, we provided 1,400 free mammograms and 18 women were diagnosed with cancer. Each of these women received successful follow-up treatment and 18 beautiful lives were saved. Thank you, NBCF!
