Mission: The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s mission is to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.
Results: NBCF has provided over 937,000 patient services since 2001 through their network of hospitals. With rising healthcare costs, many uninsured or underinsured women cannot afford the cost of screening and diagnostic tests. By providing free mammograms and breast care services to underserved women, NBCF will increase the early detection of breast cancer which will lead to higher survival rates.
Facilities within the screening and diagnostics program continue to report that because of grant funding from NBCF, they are able to help women in their areas that did not qualify for state or local funds to access mammography services. Any life that is saved is an example of the success of the program.
Target demographics: Underserved and uninsured women
Geographic areas served: Throughout the United States
Programs: Screening and Diagnostics/Patient Navigation Services:
Through its screening and diagnostics program, NBCF partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to underserved women. In addition, this program requires that medical facilities within its network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer. The program’s network includes 84 medical facilities in all 50 states.
While NBCF provides free breast care services through its screening and diagnostic program, sometimes those in need are unaware that the program exists. Through patient navigation programs at medical facilities within their network, NBCF is able to promote early detection procedures to those that need it most. NBCF’s Patient Navigator Program is a proactive approach to helping patients overcome the barriers of cost, fear, and misinformation about a disease and its prevention. By helping underserved women to navigate the healthcare system, navigators help ensure timely diagnosis and treatment and provide the vision that gives women hope.
Early Detection/Awareness Education:
NBCF’s Early Detection Plan is an interactive tool and iPhone and Android app that promotes breast health education by creating a plan to help detect the disease in its early stages. It enables women to be proactive about their health by reminding them to schedule appropriate doctor appointments.
Beyond the Shock® is a step-by-step guide to understanding the diagnosis of breast cancer presented in an interactive online website and mobile app. It allows those affected by breast cancer to learn about breast cancer, ask and answer questions in a safe and supportive online community, and hear inspirational stories from breast cancer survivors.
The Breast Health Education Program provides breast cancer education and early detection services to women at community outreaches across the country. NBCF educates women about the importance of early detection and informs them about resources that are available in their community. Women are given the opportunity to receive free clinical breast exams from nurse practitioners.
Breast Cancer Research:
NBCF strives to help find the cure for breast cancer by working with some of the finest scientists in the world. Funding is provided to MD Anderson Cancer Center as they apply comprehensive team science to improve treatment and clinical outcomes for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC). This dual focus stems from recent studies that point to remarkable similarities in the underlying molecular events that cause these two rare, aggressive cancers.
It was very easy to work with The National Breast Cancer Foundation to set up a fundraising campaign. They were prompt in responses to questions and even provided digital and tangible marketing material we could hand out to promote the fundraiser. This is our second year working with the NBCF and we plan to continue working with them in the future. Mahalo, Condominium Rentals Hawaii
The NBCF is an amazing group of people. United Hospital Center in Bridgeport WV has been honored to work with this fine organization since 2012. Though a generous grant we have been able to have a navigation program and help a large amount of uninsured and under insured breast patients. I cannot thank them enough for their support and without the NBCF we would not be able to reach so many. Thank you for all you do!

Through the generosity of a grant from NBCF, United Hospital Center now has a Clinical Navigator for breast health. This position has allowed UHC to help improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients throughout north central West Virginia.
Previously, physicians in our service area were unaware of the resources available to them. Now with the navigator position, doctors can send breast patients to the navigator when a patient may have special needs or concerns.
The patient no longer needs to travel out of the region. They can now receive the all-inclusive care they need close to home.
The navigator's job is to follow the patient from abnormal mammograms to diagnosis to treatment to survivorship. In addition, a navigator will go to biopsies with the breast patient as well as providing education on the processes to follow. It is important for the navigator to track patients so they do not get lost in the process.
The navigator's position has helped us to uncover high levels of stress to be common among cancer patients; therefore, she has applied for a grant to introduce a complimentary therapy for stress reduction.
The grant from NBCF has permitted the navigator at UHC to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent individuals from getting the right care, at the right time and by the right person for cancer prevention, early detection or cancer treatment.
We have been working with NBCF for several years now. We are a large company, and we work with NBCF leading up to every October on a company-wide campaign. They have been a complete pleasure to work with, and are quick to send us any information that we may need to make the campaign a success.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has been an outstanding partner with Sibley Memorial Hospital, Johns Hopkins Medicine for many years. Our alliance allows both organizations to extend beyond their own boundaries to ensure that women in the community get the best breast healthcare possible. With NBCF’s support, Sibley Memorial Hospital has been able to expand our navigation services to patients for screening, at point of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond into survivorship. NBCF is a compassionate and accountable organization. As grant recipient we are regularly given the opportunity to report to NBCF on our navigation program achievements, and we are honored to collaborate with this exceptional organization.
The American-Italian Cancer Foundation is honored to work with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Since 2001, NBCF has provided essential support to our No-Cost Breast Cancer Screening Program, allowing un-insured or under-insured New York City to receive their yearly mammograms and clinical breast exams. They have also allowed us to provide outreach and follow up services through our Patient Navigator Program. AICF and the women we serve are so thankful to work with NBCF!
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is proud to call the National Breast Cancer Foundation a partner in the fight against cancer. As a result of NBCF's fantastic, steadfast support over the last two years, Dana-Farber's Mammography Van has been able to provide life-saving breast health education and screening to underserved women throughout the Boston area. In addition, NBCF staff are extremely helpful and responsive to any and all questions. We are honored to partner with such a committed and mission-driven organization.
