Our organization’s commitment to enhance the quality of life and raise breast health awareness for the people we serve is made possible with the generous support of the National Breast Cancer Foundation! Since our partnership, more than 4,000 uninsured and underserved women in Oakland County have received free mammogram screenings. In the last year, we provided 1,400 free mammograms and 18 women were diagnosed with cancer. Each of these women received successful follow-up treatment and 18 beautiful lives were saved. Thank you, NBCF!

Early detection is critical in the prevention of breast cancer; however, many women in our community are uninsured and unable to afford screening mammograms. Volunteer physicians at Good News Clinics provide free primary care to those in need in our community. When we lost access to screening mammograms for our patients, we contacted the National Breast Cancer Foundation and shared the need of uninsured residents in our community. NBCF immediately responded with a desire to help and a generous donation to provide screening mammograms for those we serve. A story about Martha best illustrates the impact the National Mammography Program has on the patients served in our community. Martha came to Good News Clinics as a new patient; she had not had a breast exam or mammogram in over ten years. After a breast exam, a diagnostic mammogram was ordered by the volunteer internist and immediately further diagnostic tests were ordered. Good News Clinics was able to refer Martha to volunteer specialists to develop a treatment plan for her. A Stage III malignancy was detected in a biopsy that was scheduled shortly after the ultrasound signified an area of concern. Currently Martha is under the care of a breast surgeon, a radiation oncologist and a medical oncologist. She also has a patient navigator who speaks Spanish working with her. Martha has completed radiation and chemotherapy. Without the National Breast Cancer Foundation grant to Good News Clinics for screening mammograms, Martha may not have been able to have her breast cancer diagnosed and treated. Access to screening mammograms is an essential diagnostic test that every woman should have regardless of income level, ethnicity, or insurance status. Thanks to the generosity and caring support provided by the National Mammography Program, patients served by GNC’s volunteer physicians have access to this essential health care service.

Through the generosity of a grant from NBCF, United Hospital Center now has a Clinical Navigator for breast health. This position has allowed UHC to help improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients throughout north central West Virginia.
Previously, physicians in our service area were unaware of the resources available to them. Now with the navigator position, doctors can send breast patients to the navigator when a patient may have special needs or concerns.
The patient no longer needs to travel out of the region. They can now receive the all-inclusive care they need close to home.
The navigator's job is to follow the patient from abnormal mammograms to diagnosis to treatment to survivorship. In addition, a navigator will go to biopsies with the breast patient as well as providing education on the processes to follow. It is important for the navigator to track patients so they do not get lost in the process.
The navigator's position has helped us to uncover high levels of stress to be common among cancer patients; therefore, she has applied for a grant to introduce a complimentary therapy for stress reduction.
The grant from NBCF has permitted the navigator at UHC to identify and eliminate barriers that prevent individuals from getting the right care, at the right time and by the right person for cancer prevention, early detection or cancer treatment.

“This helps out a lot. I spent two weeks in the ER/hospital and received a large bill. I am grateful that I can get a mammogram. It’s a great help for me because I’m only working part-time at a school. Everyone here at the breast center has been very helpful and attending.”

Patient Quotes (served by public county hospital system):
“This is such a great service for patients. I am currently on unemployment and searching for a job daily. I always used to get my screening mammograms. I came to get a mammogram on June 4, hoping that I could get a mammogram and I did and was told that I was an out of county patient, but there was some grants available for me. I was so thankful for that news. I am so pleased with what you are doing at the mammography center. Please continue to help women that are in need."

"Thank you for all you do. If it wasn't for Breast Cancer Connections' Gabriella Patser Program supported by a grant from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, I don't know where I would be today. I am only 24 years old and found out 6 months ago that I have a tumor the size of two baseballs in my breast. With no medical insurance and no current job, I did not know where to turn. This program is my guardian angel. I will be forever grateful for the unlimited emotional, mental, and financial support this program provided. This program helped me get my happy back, and for that I thank you. I feel blessed, humbled and strengthened by this whole experience, I could not have done it without your support. I am extremely grateful and appreciative for this wonderful program. Continue to do amazing work and touch people's lives.

M.S.’s daughter-in-law states: “She remembers the navigators’ time shared and was not sure at the time of her pathology results what her new medical situation would bring. This situation certainly caught all of us (family, friends) unaware. My family and I felt very good about the team approach and that of the breast surgeon.”
M.S. says: “Several years ago, one of our children had surgery where she lived in Orlando. I was the primary caregiver; and I was completely caught unaware of the post-op items and care that would be needed. Not being familiar with the Cincinnati area, we have found the navigators and team at your breast center to be very helpful with references, and resources to better prepare us for my surgery, so that my family could provide me with the best care. So, thank you all for being there for us and sharing all the wonderful resources and information available to me and other patients at a time when we critically needed it. You all have made a big difference in those first few days, and weeks of my diagnosis. We just wanted to let the navigators and staff know how grateful we are for the quick responses, and precise diagnosis and recommendations for my surgery and oncology needs. Thanks again for all the answers to all those questions. You all helped to calm the nerves, and anxiety….couldn’t have done it without you all.”

NBCF has worked with the Breast and Cervical Health Check Program in the State of Alaska since 2010. During this time, they have assisted us with making mammography available to women throughout the state. We have received many reports from women that they would not have been able to have their screenings done without this help and felt like it gave them peace of mind. NBCF has been an excellent partner to work with and making funding available during a time when this is greatly needed for many woman, has been a true statement of their commitment to serve the community.

During 2010 and 2011, there were two women in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire who had their breast cancer discovered at an early stage, thanks to the “National Breast Cancer Foundation.” Mammography screening and diagnostic studies lead to early intervention which may have saved their lives. Through collaboration with the Healthcare team, they will have access to the greatest chances for survival and quality of life. What an amazing gift to be able to offer to someone!
