As a Board Member/Volunteer of Assistance League of Charlotte, and a very active volunteer within the Charlotte community all my adult life, I can honestly say this is a group of dedicated volunteers unlike any group or organization I have encountered. before. They work hard, they are frugal with their funds and their hearts are in the right place. Does Assistance League of Charlotte change lives? You bet we do. We clothe children in uniforms and warm winter coats so they can fit into their school classes, We fill hungry bellies with nutritious snacks so they can concentrate on their studies. We turn lives around by giving a teen a second chance to right a wrong. We give scholarships to deserving students so college becomes a reality. We waste nothing as we reach out to other organizations in our Outreach program. I tell each and every person who will slow down long enough to listen about Assistance League of Charlotte, what we do, why we do it and how they can help.

Assistance League of Charlotte volunteers are a group of hard-working people with the biggest hearts in the city. I was first drawn to them through a newspaper article about their program, Operation Check Hunger. In this day and age, children shouldn't go hungry, and here was this organization making sure they didn't. Daily during the school year, Assistance League of Charlotte provides snacks to send home with thousands of children so they can attend to their studies without an empty tummy. WOW! I wanted to be a part of that group. While that is the program that drew me to Assistance League, I met with them and was taken aback with their other programs. Many, many hours go into support of Operation School Bell, Operation Check Hunger, Mecklenburg County Teen Court, Scholarships, Outreach and into running the Thrift Store which is the primary source of funding for the programs. While working hard, volunteers have fun yet never lose focus of the goals of feeding, clothing, mentoring and educating at risk children and their families in the community.

Assistance League of Charlotte - Mecklenburg County Teen Court - My son was involved in an incident at school - an incident involving significant peer pressure. This program was absolutely invaluable to my son, Andy. Not only was this program an alternative to the formal court system, the program gave my son an opportunity to participate and understand our court system and contribute to the community in several ways. He received a sentence for his participation in the incident, and through the process, he more fully understood the ramifications of this behavior and more importantly, learned alternative ways of responding to similar situations now and in the future. He also had the opportunity to serve as a juror, and understand the 'other side of the courtroom'. I cannot say enough good things about this program - it saved my child, and I am truly grateful. A Thankful Parent.

The Assistance League of Charlotte is an important, and well-run,asset to our community. These volunteers provide clothing in the form of school uniforms and coats, shoes, underwear, and tolietries to thousands of our community's most needy students. These ladies order, sort and deliver daily snacks to dozens of schools and serve thousands of economically challenged in this small way to help them get through their school day without an empty stomach. The Thrift Shop that the Assistance League runs is not only beautiful but so efficent. It serves as their primary source of funds - but through their well priced items, repair and press job on clothing, and complete inspection and repair on household items, and furniture offerings - the Assistance League Thrift Shop is an important shopping haven for many of our city's residents to make ends meet. The Teen Court program is unique both to our County and the only one of it's kind for an Assistance League in the US. This program has made a difference in changing the lifes of teens - not just a way to get them out of the court experience. In addition it had saved the court system so much time and money! The Assistance League of Charlotte NC is a true gem in our community for the one of a kind work they do!

The Assistance League is an amazing consortium of women who have taken the time to gather and empower women and children who are less fortunate. Growing up, I was a latch-key kid in Harlem, NYC. My mom became a single mom through divorce and struggled to raise my brother and I. I remember my grandmother borrowing a cup of milk from the neighbors one day so that I could have something in my stomach for school. It may not have been the Assistance league that helped me and my family in NYC, but it was through the efforts of people like them that I was able to become what I have become. I was mentored, clothed and fed by folks like these and their work is changing lives at the speed of which i am sure they have no idea. If they could see into the future they would be able to see what a difference they are making. this is an amazing group and its why I sit on the board of advisors.

I have seen the work that this organization does by the enthousiasm that its volunteers show and the time that they put in to their work. I am delighted to be part of an organization that gives so much to children and families in our community. Operation School Bell does a wonderful of giving clothing to school children. The AL thrift shop provides another opportunity for families to find items that they may need. I am a new board member but I joined the board because I want to be able to help this wonderful organization continue its fine work in this community.

Fantastic orgnization that changes lives. My favorite program is their Operation School Bell. It provides new school clothes for students who do not have appropriate clothing. Keep up the great work AL!

The Charlotte chapter is a group of hardworking, fun loving volunteers whose work has a huge impact on local students with new clothing (School Bell), peer counseling (Teen Court) and school snacks. Members and guests attend philanthropic programs together such as the Empty Bowl Luncheon and sponsor the splendid annual fundraising fashion show. And the Thrift Shop!It is decorated and managed like a small, high quality department store with donations from the public. The stock is fresh and items seasonal, and they do not waste anything, by donating those items that do not sell to other organizations. It has been a privilege to meet so many women dedicated to making a difference in the lives of young people.

I work as a news anchor at WBTV and I'm involved in lots of efforts to help Charlotte at risk youth. One of my favorite organizations is Assistance League of Charlotte. The work these volunteers do-- changes lives. I am always moved when it's time for operation school bell. The joy and pride you see on these youngster's faces stays with you year round. Through their school bell efforts you children who otherwise wouldn't have the proper uniforms are able to go to school with new clothing, a warm coat and the grooming supplies that will make them feel confident and ready to learn. I have never met a volunteer who didn't have those young kids at the center of her heart. The AL thrift shop is one of my favorite second hand s hops in town. I am always so impressed with the volunteers who work in the shop. They are always enthusiatic, attentive and engergized. It makes the experience of shopping there fun! I wish I could spend more time with the AL of Charlotte. It's the kind of organization that makes me feel good and know I'm making a difference!!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the bright happy faces of the children we've helped.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

compassionate and kind, giving of themselve, and sympathetic to the needs of the children.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

expand and help more kids with their love and kindness.

I was really just dropping some stuff off, or at least that is how it started... But the problem is, the people who volunteer at Assistance League of Charlotte are just so nice, they sort of suck you into a conversation. They're excited about what they do, and that rubs off on the people they talk to. So when I realized that I might be of some assistance, it didn't take long for me to want to help... That was almost a year ago. And in that time, I've come to realize that even making a little difference, can mean a lot to the right person. That time volunteered, doesn't mean that the work is unrewarding. And being part of something good, can actually be something great.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the faces of people, who for the first time, are getting the chance to step into a world that most of us take for granted - the world of technology.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have to have a much better understanding of the organization as a whole, before I started to make recommendations.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people... They are what got me interested, and they are what keep me coming back.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

friendly, excited, pleasant, accepting, helpful... basically - the best.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

... it would.... help more people. They've got the basics down.. They help. They help a lot of people. So more money will allow them to expand the programs they already have, and maybe a few more that just aren't possible right now.

Ways to make it better...

... nothing... It's been a great experience.. Any complaints I might come up with are petty little things that really don't matter.. (it's cold in winter - so what. it's hot in summer - same response. And this is the best I can come up with).

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

finding enough room to get all the donated materials into view of potential customers.

One thing I'd also say is that...

.. I have nothing to put here...

I have worked with the Assisstance League of Charlotte for nearly three years and the services they provide the community is beyond comparison. They have helped improve the lives of so many families in the area which in turn impacts the entire Charlotte community in such a positive way. I feel honored to have helped in such a small way to this dedicated organization!
