I'm one of the newest volunteers, but in a long-term position, and while I jumped in the middle of several long-term plans and suddenly had a lot to help with, I was presented with a lot of support from everyone, including being introduced to others who could help me. In fact, the thing I was impressed by within hours of starting to volunteer was the professionalism, spirit, energy, and skill that dominates the staff. It's a small organization, but with big plans, and a rapidly developing program in India to support those plans.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

individual lives of children who are now getting options they wouldn't otherwise.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

my my job lets me daily read and share with others the experiences and aspirations of our teachers and students in India

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

enthusiastic, intelligent, perceptive, and skilled

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

achieve the amazing success it is now, but on a larger scale (more schools, more children!). It's not the money (ok, it sometimes is), it's how you use it.

Ways to make it better...

I occasionally feel too busy (in a good way, if you know what I mean).

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

not enough people yet for the grand scheme

One thing I'd also say is that...

Nanubhai has already changed my life. Seriously.

I joined Nanubhai as a volunteer in 2007 and have worked in a number of different capacities, including event-planning, grant applications, fund-raising, and communications. I came onboard because I was deeply inspired by the organization's mission to help kids in rural Indian communities and by the enthusiasm and dedication of the other volunteers I spoke with. What makes Nanubhai especially compelling is that it works at the grassroots level, within existing public schools, and that it targets very specific educational initiatives relevant to India's growing role in the world economy: IT skills, English language, and girls' empowerment. Since I first connected with Nanubhai, I have been rewarded over and over again by seeing the results of our efforts in the improved school facilities and learning opportunities for the kids. I've also been impressed by the talent and passion of all the volunteers and fellows I've had the opportunity to work with. This is an organization I am proud to be part of and would recommend to anyone.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

increased graduation rates at our pilot school and the incredibly warm reception of our efforts from the school, community, and local media.

The Nanubhai Education Foundation is an amazing organization that seeks to advance education in rural India by promoting English and technology education at the grassroots level. India is changing so rapidly, but a large portion of the population does not participate in the new economy. Through NEF, highly qualified and committed American teachers are sent to public high schools. I have been impressed by the teachers in India, and have had the privilege to talk to several about their experiences. I am also excited to meet and talk to new volunteers willing to donate their time to help us on fundraising and outreach. It is incredibly rewarding to be part of an organization that has already done so much to give underprivileged children in India an opportunity to climb out of poverty and committed to building on that momentum one student, one classroom and one high school at a time. We are always looking for committed volunteers to help us here and in India, and encourage anyone interested to visit our website at www.nanubhai.org or e-mail me at kandarp@nanubhai.org.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the increase in the graduation rate at Kadod High School from 25 percent to 75 percent in such a short time.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

focus on increasing awareness of the great work Nanubhai has already done and would be able to do with additional resources and support.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the incredible individuals that keep the organization running, from Founder Raj Shah to the dedicated teachers in India to the volunteers in the United States.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

intelligent, dedicated and entrepreneurial. Everyone is focused on advancing education in rural India without a personal agenda or ego.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach more underprivileged children and give them the opportunity to pull themselves and their families out of poverty.

Ways to make it better...

I had only started earlier.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

expanding the program to more high schools and more states in India. I am confident that the current team in place will be able to meet this challenge and reach even more underprivileged children across India.

One thing I'd also say is that...

nonprofit work, and working at Nanubhai in particular, is a rewarding, challenging and humbling experience. I wish I had realized earlier in life the benefits of volunteering.

I worked for Nanubhai Education Foundation as one of their fellows in the 2008-2009 school year. Cat, another Nanubhai fellow, and I taught academic school English classes as well as before and after school Computer Classes and Spoken English Classes. Everyday I had the chance to work with motivated, hard-working students who were eager to try the challenges that Cat and I, the presented in our classes. We challenged students with interactive classes that required students to demonstrate their mastery of English and IT skills through completion of various projects as well as to increase their flexibility and fluency with Spoken English through Spoken English games and plays written and performed by students. At the same time, the students taught us about their lives, their town, their school, and their languages. It was an incredibly rewarding experiences and I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to do this work through Nanubhai.

I worked with the Nanubhai Education Foundation on their New York City fundraiser March 2009. The event was a success and a blast to produce. The core team really makes you feel like one of the family. I will work with them again in the future and would recommend anyone volunteering for them who wants to be part of a warm, organized and productive team.
