Finding Reba
It had been over six months since our little dog Shyanne passed away due to complications of a brain tumor. After witnessing the little champ soldier on, caring for her daily needs and the struggle that we all went through, it was
difficult to imagine considering another addition to our family. Shyanne was permanently in our hearts and it just didn't feel right to move on.
Until we saw the Beneful commercial on television. I watched it online at http://www.beneful.com/commercials/default.aspx over and over again. It is so adorable, with the little terrier and the man lying on the floor looking up at the bag of Beneful, "Have you ever seen anything like it?" the man asks the dog as they both turn over at the same time and then run through the house together.
Unbeknownst to me my husband had launched a full scale crusade to find us a Beneful dog. There were none to be found until one night my husband was searching online at Petfinder.com and called me over to take a look at something. As soon as I saw Reba, I exclaimed, she's the one! That's her. That is absolutely her. And look, she's even got her own web site!
Reba was at a rescue center called Mutt Matchers in Kingman Arizona. So I emailed Mutt Matchers and got an immediate response from Judy Torgerson. We had many questions about Reba. Because Reba was estimated to be about 2 ½ years old, we wondered if we would still be able to bond with her. Oh, Reba bonds with everybody Judy assured us. This turned out to be the understatement of the year. What an amazing experience we were about to undergo.
Judy answered all of our questions quickly and encouraged us to submit our application if we were interested so that we could secure a spot for Reba. Since we were out of state, we had to agree to a yard investigation to make sure that we could provide a secure fenced environment for Reba to thrive in. We were fortunate that our local Humane Society was nice enough to accommodate us all and provide the on site inspection.
After we were approved, it was off to Kingman, Arizona to meet Reba. We had to take Riley, our 13 year old cocker mix, which was a challenge due to his age and since he isn't accustomed to traveling. But apparently you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and Riley was triumphant and proudly made the trip to meet his prospective new sister.
What an experience! The drive from Salt Lake City to Kingman, Arizona was long, but we were so excited to meet Reba we almost broke into Mutt Matchers the night before our appointment (I made that last part up) But we did drive by. When we arrived the next morning we were immediately greeted by the Mutt
Matchers gang. It happened to be the day that the monthly board of directors meeting was held so we got to meet everyone on the board, which made it that much more special. We felt such a kinship with the Mutt Matchers gang, Judy, Sandy, Karen, Mary, Charlene, Teresa, Tina , Andraya, and Pam.
I had not mentioned anything about the Beneful dog to Judy, but when we walked in to meet Reba they shouted, "get ready to meet the Beneful dog!" It was a sloppy kisses party for everyone. We spent about 2 ½ hours getting acquainted with Reba and she and Riley even had an Alpha Dog moment when he set her straight about who the top dog was. It happened again when we got home . and then he went back to sleep.
We were so touched by the dedication, commitment and charity demonstrated by everyone at Mutt Matchers. Their love for the dogs runs so deep and it is returned by these canine companions who clearly feel loved and enjoy being there. Mutt Matchers is truly a family atmosphere and everyone adores these dogs and it shows in what they do. What a generous way to give back to an unfortunate group that can not speak for themselves. Mutt Matchers gives these fantastic devoted animals a voice that they otherwise would not have. In speaking for the dogs, they are given another chance at life and end up giving back much more than they receive. You are either part of the solution or you are part of the problem. Mutt Matchers gets it. They are truly "dog people" and as we continued to express during our visit, they have so much to be proud of, all that they have accomplished and will accomplish and their wonderful acts of kindness. Giving another chance to these loving animals actually gives people like us another chance at happiness.
We were able to tour the Mutt Matchers facility and see how the entire process takes place. It is indeed a well oiled machine, from the heated and air conditioned sleeping kennels to the outdoor play area that is covered with a shade in the summer heat. Thanks to donations, Mutt Matchers supports their community by offering programs such as Stop Pet Overpopulation Together (SPOT), a service to spay and neuter dogs of people who could not otherwise afford to have this procedure performed, and the Care 'N'Share program that allows Mutt Matchers to donate dog and cat food (which has been donated to them by the public and local merchants) to pet owners that have fallen upon hard times. These well behaved dogs also get to give back to their communities by participating in a program called Pound Pals visiting nursing homes and schools. This truly gives them a sense of purpose. And as an added bonus, Mutt Matchers will also assist dog owners by providing information and guidance on dog care, behavior problems, etc. They also administer some of their own vaccinations. This is truly an amazing place.
I couldn't stop myself from crying as we prepared to leave. I could see how much Reba adored everyone there and the feeling was mutual. But the gang assured us that these were happy tears because they had found Reba her "forever" home and that is what they do. So we promised to send photos and keep in touch with the Mutt Matchers gang.
As far as we are concerned, we can't help but feel that Reba was meant to be ours. She fits right in like she's been here for years. We are completely smitten with her and her constant antics keep us entertained. She's always got something going on. She adds a new purpose to life and keeps us grounded in the real world with what is truly important to appreciate. Who needs cable with Reba! And to think what we might have missed out on if Mutt Matchers had not been there to rescue her and we hadn't found her.
Reba is a cartoon dog for sure. Looney Tunes we think. She keeps telling people that her parents got her "online"! She makes us laugh constantly and has brought so much joy to our lives.
- and as it turned out, she is exactly what we needed.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Touring the facility when we adopted our "forever" family member. Witnessed first hand the devotion of these fantastic life saving angels and how they our their heart and soul into this enterprise that gives down-on-their-luck canines a voice and another chance at life and happiness. But the real winners are the folks who adopt them since these dogs give way more than they take.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

. . . nothing, other than I would live closer to them so that I could work there and be a part of the "team that makes a difference in this world." Get the word out = More donations=More lives saved.

We adopted a MiPin dog from mutt matchers. They are very careful who they let adopt there dogs so they are sure the animals will be loved and well cared for. The staff really cares about the safety and well being of their dogs. They check on them after they are adopted to be sure everthing is okay. They kept a lot of very fine pets from being utheniszed. This organization deserves all the support they can get for their work.

I am Dr. Kristen Andrews and am the primary veterinarian for Mutt Matchers and Friends. We work exclusively with this rescue organization. They are have a very clear vision and they do not deviate from their vision. They go through a very detailed process of hand selecting each dog that they adopt to ensure that this is a dog that can be placed into a new home. They also thoroughly screen those who are interested in adopting a pet to make sure it is a good fit. The dogs are kept in a beautiful facility, have plenty of room to live in, have a great exercise area, and have very dedicated volunteers to take care of their pets. These dogs are their family! This is a group that I wholeheartedly support, stand behind, and believe in.

The Great!

We love Mutt Matchers!!! We lost our doggie and were heart broken, She past away and it was so hard on us. We dicided "not to get a dog for a while"... But then we went on the hunt. After a not so successful adoption and having to return the dog to the adoption agency, someone told us about Mutt Matchers. They totally live up to their name. We went in wanting a certain kind of dog, and walked out with a totally opposite kind. BUT, they knew what they were doing matching us with "Cajun our King"! They have kept in touch with us and have been such great friends. They take such good care of their dogs, train them very well and hence have such a great success rate! We tell everyone we know to see them if they are looking for a doggie. Judy and the staff truly love what they are doing and it shows. Hats off to Mutt Matchers!!!! They also have a few programs to help lower income people help spay and nueter their pets... this is an awesome thing to do. We so appreciatte all their hard work and all the volunteers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Mutt Matchers was founded on saving good dogs from euthanasia. The size of the adoption center limits the number of animals they can save and still properly provide for their physical and mental welfare. The dogs are hand picked, vaccinated,spayed/neutered, microchipped and mannered. They get lots of human interaction and every effort is made to screen adopters and match them with the right dog while ensuring the dog gets a loving, secure home.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The shear quality of dogs saved and re-homed and the wonderful home they have while housed at Mutt Matchers & Friends

We found out about Mutt Matchers and Friends from a neighbor. We were initially looking for a black lab pup. But, when we heard about Duchess from Mutt Matchers we knew she was our new baby. She was 2 years old and they had rescued her from the pound, where she was to be destroyed. They sent her out to the prison and the inmates with the guidance of a dog trainer, trained her. She is completely housebroken with NO accidents ever. Mutt Matchers had us fill out an application and they inspected our home to make sure it was dog friendly and safe. As we inspected their facility and found it to be clean, well run and organized. We were a match (no pun intended). We picked up Duchess and promptly took her to our Vet to make sure she was healthy. The Vet examined her and gave her the necessary shots to make sure she was innoculated properly and said that Duchess was in excellent health. Mutt Matchers checked in with us time to time to make sure all was going well. Judy Torgeson even came out to help me understand how to work with Duchess to make sure she remembered her training. I highly recommend Mutt Matchers to all of our friends and would encourage any responsible owner looking for a great dog to adopt from Mutt Matchers and Friends. Karen and Stephen Strain

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Their understanding of the dog and their intense drive to find the right placement for both the owner and the pet.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very well trained and extremely caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Save all the strays and find good homes for each dog.

Ways to make it better...

It could not have been better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding, there is a great need for this organization in our community ... but like any other business they need help to feed the animals and spay and neuter the animals. That takes money.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Mutt Matchers and Friends are very professional and needs funding to stay in business. They are needed for our pet community to continue to stay protected.

We found out about Mutt Matchers and Friends when we needed to fill a void in our lives when a beloved pet had to be relieved of his suffering. By searching the internet for "rescue" pets that matched our desires for an animal, we were able to bring home a dog that fits into our family and extended family, perfectly. We still cannot believe that this precious boy was given up and lived in a shelter from September until March, when we brought him home. Mutt Matchers runs their organization with love and care and it shows. I hated to see some of the workers/volunteers with tears in their eyes when we took him with us, but it also let me know just what an unselfish group of people they are!

I adopted Ziva in June and was very happy with the process. They keep the kennel very clean and the dogs have their own space that is not like the pound. My other dog Sandy is very happy with Ziva. They treat their dogs with a lot of love and it shows when you adopt one.

Mutt Matchers & Friends is a non-profit dog shelter in Kingman, AZ. It is one of the best animal shelters I have ever come in contact with because it is unbelievably clean, the dogs are happy, well-socialized creatures, and the people who volunteer and work there are educated about each dog in their care as well as dog ownership. The volunteers and employees care deeply about each dog and want to ensure that it goes to the best possible home. This means that each dog is treated like a "special favorite". I can't say enough positive things about Mutt Matchers & Friends. It's just a great organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've helped to socialize the dogs as well as looking over applications and going on yard checks. I've also helped pick dogs from the animal control which consists of evaluating the dogs for proper socialization. Finally, I've help take dogs to the vet.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I really love working with the dogs. They are all so unique and fun to be around.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Everyone puts the health and well-being of the dogs at the top of their priority list, and it is apparent when you see the facility. Everyone is also very well-educated about each dog and about dog ownership.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Buy/build a huge facility so they could rescue tons of dogs. They'd have a vet on staff as well as dog trainers and other people to ensure the organization is properly run. They would also be able to expand their spay/neuter program in the area.
