Mission: The vision of the opera company is to establish a center where children, teens and adults can experience and be part of a classical arts organization dedicated to education and appreciation of the fine art of Opera and classical music. Martinez Opera Contra Costa is dedicated to providing the community with numerous programs that engage all socioeconomic levels , age groups, and ethnticities.  Martinez Opera Contra Costa is committed to the realization of the Contra Costa County Cultural Plan, prepared by the Arts and Culture commission of Contra Costa County, which emphisies the importance of arts education, outreach , advocacy and communication. Martinez Opera Contra Costa also recognizes the arts as an emerging potent force in the ecomomic life of cities and rural areas and embracess the restoration and revitalization of communities through the arts, by bringing about a cultural renaissance in the County which will unite communities and create economic opportunity. It is important for non-profit arts organizations to take a role in the lives of youth. The concept of getting ?children off the streets? is a reality and shared by law enforcement officials, California Lawyers for the Arts, Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County and Martinez Opera Contra Costa. Preventing delinquency is a real problem when youth have no outlets. This problem can be addressed with in a positive, progressive and enriching environment. Martinez Opera Contra Costa believes that our program Pro-Production can impact students by exposing them to a theatrical experience from the ground up thus acting as a mentor and cultivator of positive interaction rather than the latter, negative behavior. Teach a child to paint or write poetry and it could help cut down on childhood delinquency and catch ?at risk? youth before their behavior turns into a public problem.  ?California Arts and Healthy Communities? a symposium of art advocates. Lawyers and law enforcement officials concluded that organizations with the capacity to help ?at risk youth? should increase their programs. Martinez Opera Contra Costa aims to build with this alliance already in motion for involving youth in arts. ?It has been shown that the arts reduce crimes and recidivism, if you can get involved in those activities, any kid, no matter what socioeconomic strata, will benefit. The more positives you can put in front of them, the more they will not be involved in anti-social behavior.? Alma Robinson California Lawyers for the Arts.

I have attended both productions put on by Martinez Opera. The high quality of artists and musicians make it a true opera experience. To have this quality of performing in downtown Martinez, is something that I never expected and I am so pleased that it is happening. Being a professional opera singer, I am thrilled to see that the Martinez community can have this art form brought right to their doorstep. I only hope that more people will support the company and keep it going.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Enjoying the opera productions

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

nothing

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

To have a high quality performing group so close to home.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Very kind and helpful

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Perform in a larger venue

Ways to make it better...

Not to charge for programs

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Do not know.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I wish for continued success.

Hubby and I went to a fund raiser for the MTZO recently for its "Dine with a Diva" dinner. What a fabulous time we had. The diva of the day was a young beautiful woman who had the voice of an angel. We need to keep the MTZO in Martinez because it is a jewel. The folks behind the MTZO (Maria Billingsly and friends) work very hard to raise funds for the opera to have a permanent home. We are so lucky to have them. Go MTZO!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

fund raising efforts.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Try to get the City Council to help them out like they help the Willows Theatre

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They genuinely want to be in Martinez

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Kind and enthusiastic

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a permanent home and be able to put on great shows

Ways to make it better...

More people contributed.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the Economy and all that entails

One thing I'd also say is that...

Even if you don't like opera, the talent and music is wonderful.

The Martinez Opera Company is wonderful. I have gone to several of their productions both small and large scale and have been delighfully entertained. The quality of talent is superb. Costume and set designs have been spectacular given their small budget. I would reccommned anyone to see one of their productions. Your money is well invested on a ticket!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

In my experience I cannot come up with any changes that need to take place. May be in the future one will present itself.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Is the professionalism and obvious hardworl gone into the productions

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Kind and professional

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

take the opera world by storm!

Ways to make it better...

As of this writing my experience has been more than satisfactory. Go MTZO!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

The biggest challenge I have heard is coming up with enough funding to make these fabulous productions possible. Maybe creative ways of fundraising would be a help.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I have been enjoyed Opera for many years. I have not missed any of the Martinez Opera performances and I am really impressed for the quality of them, Martinez Opera is always very careful in bringing the best to the public, not only in regards to the singers which is the most important thing but also in the way everything is set up on the stage. I am aware of the extra activities that Martinez Opera does with children which help to educate them about what good music means. I want to point that I have seen Madame Butterfly in several occasions including one performance done at the New York Metropolitan House which was run by PBS, but in my opinion the one done by Martinez Opera has been the best. Good way to go MTZO! I hope we can enjoy another good performace pretty soon. Elizabeth Hernandez Concord, CA.

MTZO is a gem in Contra Costa County. To have this caliber of performing arts in this community is nothing less than a treasure. I have seen a number of shows and have participated as a volunteer for both shows and events, and in either case I'm always impressed by performers, stage, and sound. They are like the little train that could, with so many obstacles, they continue to persevere and meet their goals each time. I look forward to their next shows!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

quit, and give all responsibilities back to the person(s) who run it now.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being exposed to opera, what it takes to put one together, and appreciation for everyone that makes it happen.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

retain a real performing arts center, allowing them room to practice and perform, without them having to sacrifice their first child and 12 pints of blood

Ways to make it better...

I was able to see the orchestra in 'the pit' as opposed to in a back room because the auditorium was not designed for such.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

money

The last performance was one of the best I have seen produced by a local group. Some of the operas I have seen at the big opera houses were not as good.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

two different operas.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The enthusiasm, energy and the great voices.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

very dedicated and energetic.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

beat the very best opera houses.
