Address:

1527 Wyoming St Missoula MT 59801 USA

Mission:

Provide a model of urban sustainable living through education, demonstration, and celebration in the missoula community. Our most significant programs are the missoula tool library, truck share, and sustainability living workshop series and its related residency project.

Programs:

Tool lending library served over 400 households this year, with close to 700 people borrowing tools for home improvement, lawn and garden care, food preservation, and more. Our library has over 2,000 tools available for our members to borrow.

educating the greater missoula community through demonstrating sustainable urban living methods with the backyard sustainability workshop series, resources library and website, and youth focused programs to expand our impact in future, urban decision makers.

residency program allows our residents to live in our community as part of aplanned living environment. M. U. D. Residents care for the community gardens, help run other programs, and contribute time as volunteers leading tours of demonstration projects on our sites. In exchange, m. U. D. Residents receive low rents for their efforts. This program allows city residents to explore using sustainable living techniques so they can live with less impact throughout their lives, especially when they move on in the future.

truck share program reduces large vehicle trips on our community by allowing our members to borrow a truck for large hauling tasks, like moving, gardening, waste removal, and other projects. M. U. D. Members can then purchase smaller vehicles, or use sustainable transportation methods for everyday use, and reserve the trucks for a few times a year they need a larger vehicle.

MUD is a wonderful resource in Missoula. Their friendly staff helped me find the right tools and the information I needed.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping me build compost

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

nothing

While I'm not part of the Missoula community, I am intrigued by the ideas and methods of sustainability put forth by this group. I feel as though many of the community services that this group offers, such as the tool library and the truck share programs are great ways to encourage not only sustainability but also a sense of community camaraderie. I think these organizations should be more widespread, especially in agricultural areas.

Encourage the spread of organizations like this across the country.

I have been aware and used the services of MUD since it's inception. This nonprofit has been an invaluable source in our community, from sponsoring and organizing activities to educating the general public on sustainable living. I have used tools from their Tool Library, gone to workshops from on raising chickens, pruning trees and building coldframes. I am the advisor for a local high schools recycling/sustainabliity club and MUD has been there to answer questions and help students get involved. I could not have done half of what I do to live sustainablity without the support of MUD.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my lifestyle. I currently have been able learn how to and accomplished a more stustainable lifestyle.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have it be open for longer periods of time. I am sure the reason it isn't is due to costs.

I love MUD! The tool library is my favorite and such an amazing asset to the community. MUD is one of the best non-profits around and is an amazing model for a healthy community!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Being able to access tools at the tool library that are shared amongst the community rather than having to purchase them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increasing the number of hours per week the tool library is open.

MUD is a fantastic organization. Frugal, grass-roots, sustainable, and making a big impact in the community, there isn't much more one can expect from a social benefit organization. And unlike so many other orgs, MUD has stayed true to its mission and hasn't expanded just because it has been so successful. It has been devoted to its core principles for years, and offers huge value-added service to the community.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

...services offered. I have been a member in the past, but have continued to support MUD even after I moved outside their immediate community reach.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would add a satellite tool library, especially for general yard tools and possibly just a locked shed, in other parts of town.
