Mission: Thanks to you, we have reached a 97% success rate in fiscal year 2015-16. Now at 98% Our Mission is to help all in need to the best of our ability. We follow the parable of the Good Samaritan, as there are no requirements for our services. We constantly reinvent the wheel, and adapt quickly to make it work in any situation. The faces of homelessness can change as well as each individual's circumstances. Our founder became homeless himself, and found that traditional shelters were not working, and did not address the needs of the homeless, especially Veterans. This in and of itself was discouraging, as our Veterans fought for the rights of all, not just themselves. The Founder feels that no one should lose those rights by becoming homeless. Many fought and also died for freedom in America. The Mission in Citrus operates on love and a family atmosphere. Veterans, and many others who are homeless are helped regardless of their beliefs or unique situations. Many of the homeless Veterans have given up trusting our society, and have little access to shelter and services in rural settings. Based out of Citrus County, Florida, our program is designed for those who are less than perfect and know it, but want and need health, outreach, spiritual, and social services. We seek to empower homeless Veterans of all ages to meet their own needs. Recognizing the uniqueness, dignity, and value of each person, we accept individuals as they are, in an affirming and compassionate manner, and call upon the larger community to the same mission. The Mission provides basic and self-care supplies, free health care, housing and supportive services for the homeless Veterans that are the hardest to reach, including those who refuse to go into a shelter and live out in the rural wooded areas of our county. The Mission also provides referrals to other community agencies, such as child care providers and legal aid. The Mission in Citrus Inc operates three shelters located in Crystal River, and Inverness, Florida. The Mission In Citrus strives to help all in need - regardless of their faith or lack of. While we encourage, teach, and preach the Gospel, we force it upon no one. It is not a requirement for any of our services. As Founder and Executive Director , I have worked for seven years to improve the help we give to others. That is between God and I. But there are several projects that need to be completed before God takes me home. Most of them concern Veterans, as they are becoming the new face of homelessness each day. In the past two weeks, we have taken in six new Veterans. Not good. I am asking for help in getting them help with disabilities, contacting Congressman, and funding to offer more services. Anyone can visit the shelter at 306 south Park Ave in Inverness at anytime and meet our homeless Veterans. One is a three combat tour Veteran who only gets 30% disability after being shot in the head. It appals me.. Please help. Every little bit counts.God bless

My name is Robert Brown. I moved back to Florida after a loss in My Family in 2009. After a couple months of being home I found myself down on my luck and homeless. I was at a appointment at the VA where I explained to the secretary my situation. She gave me information on a homeless shelter. I called the Mission In Citrus and talked to Jim Sleighter. After talking to him and said he would have someone come and get me and I could stay at the shelter. There I was able to make contacts with VA reps about Disability as well as Veteran Housing in Gainesville. I stayed at the Mission from June until October of 2009. Because of respect and dignity I was given and a warm family-atmosphere I was able to get to Gainesville and finish my disability case with the VA. With in 7 months I was back on my feet receiving my VA disability and moving back to Citrus County to live with My Future Wife and be closer to My Youngest Son. Because of the Love Shown I recently Joined on The Board and help out the Veteran's Shelter in Inverness,FL. Thanks Again Mission In Citrus and Mr Jim Sleighter!

This is a moment that changed me and my life completely. Having hit rock bottom was a very hard thing in my life. I was lucky that out of the kindness of my heart I kept my head up and had a good attitude about all of that was happening in my life. I also had a good attitude with people around me. When I became homeless it was around 8 pm I remember because I had a cup of coffee. I couldn't think straight, and I wasn't from around here either. I had come from South Carolina and did not know that I was going to face something like this I mean I was feeling a mix of shame and sadness also confusion. I pray to God every day that I was homeless praying to God that something good will come I did not know anyone lucky. I was a pretty smart dude and knew how to survive out there it wasn't easy I was homeless for about two weeks sleeping out on the streets. The first thing I got was a job then went to a shelter bless that there was one. Live at the shelter for a few months and still there. All I want is to have a safe small place to live and I be happy. I been wanting to get out of the shelter, but it is hard. I am blessed that Jim is willing to help me. I pray for everyone in the shelter.

I came to the mission after my mom told me to leave, they helped me get back on my feet and to be my own person It's a very welcoming place here and I'm glad we were able to get in. It's a really great thing they have here, helping people who have nowhere else to go.

I moved here a few years ago with my mother from Alaska. We moved to my grandmothers house to live with her so that we could take care of her as she had recently got metal plates in her knee. Everything was going fine until she got cancer and then suddenly everything was our fault. It really started to go downhill when I had to go get school supplies and the car was still half full of gas, it was a long day of shopping for both of us so mother forgot to put gas in the car, in which later she promised to fill it the following day. My grandmother flipped out. After yelling at mother she started ignoring us both. Skip forward a month or two. We had quite a few cats and a dog and we recently got a few additions to our family in the form of kittens. We came home to find the ac unit pulled out of the wall and a window ac in my grandmothers room. Seeing as we had animals, my mother had to spend 200$ on a window ac so our animals and newborn kittens didn't die of heat stroke. Skip forward a few weeks. My mother had offered to pay the electric bill but my grandmother said he had already gotten it paid. We later found out she did not by coming home to no electricity. Thats when we had to give up our animals and move out, one of our newborn kittens died along the way. We moved to The Mission, who has greatly helped us. Mother now had a job and is trying to get a second one to save up for a car. Its a very welcoming place here and I'm glad we were able to get in. Its a really great thing they have here, helping people who have nowhere else to go.

i ended up at the mission in citrus county 9/26/2021.i had to put my dog I had for 2 yrs.in the shelter. that broke my heart .my dog made my life managable.the mission welcomed me, and they provide me with all my needs. citrus has very little out there to live the mission has no timeline for me to leave. Which is less stressful makes it a little bit easier to deal with not having my home or my dog.im blessed. God is good. The mission has been very patient and kind. I appreciate what they are doing here.

My wife and I recently found ourselves homeless after nearly 21 years of marriage with no place to go and nobody to turn to it was scary, but thank God for the mission they took us both in, gave us a roof over our heads beds to sleep in and food to eat. Very helpful staff everyone is friendly the houses do need some work but everybody helps to keep up. The staff seems to be very knowledgeable and ready to help us to move on with our lives. Shelters are not the ideal place but if you want/ need help you with find it here at the mission

Hi. My name is Victoria and myself and my 2 kids need help really badly. We had a house fire 4 months ago today. I’m a struggling single mom and had no homeowners ins at the time. My kids are 15 and 18. My 18 year old is autistic with ptsd and learning disabilities and had been on disability for many years. My 15 year old (Paris German)is a patient of yours. I can’t remember our caseworker and we lost a lot of important paperwork in the fire She had reconstructive spine surgery for chronic scoliosis with the help of Shriners a year ago. I also suffer from PTSD which I was handling until I became homeless.
I “had” a group of Scientologist helping. But they literally “abandoned” us as we have no desire to become Scientologist. They also would make my 18 year old cry by telling her she isn’t autistic. They insisted they could get it out of her. It was a really hard situation to handle whilst trying to remain great full for any help.
At this point I have done a ton of demo work removing charred Sheetrock and scrubbing the walls in my home. I’m working on obtaining a remodel permit but again only myself to do everything. I’ve never done electrical before but I have done construction previously a decade ago in NY.
we are so unbelievably desperate for help.
my home was remodeled prior to us and the damage is only new construction in 10% of the house. The original Plaster and laugh construction is untouched. The structure has not been compromised in any way. The fire was not able to spread in the walls or rafters. We so desperately want to go home.
Im an American citizen born in Fl. I have no criminal record. I don’t even have a moving violation on my driving record. We are good people. We always try to help others in need but now it’s us 3 girls.
if I have to do this totally alone I don’t know when we will be able to go home.
Im begging you from the bottom of my heart to pease please please help us. Our whole family is torn apart. My kids have to sleep at friends houses and I sleep in my car with my dogs. I can’t lose my dogs too, we almost lost them in the fire if it wasn’t for my neighbor bravely running in to save them they would have been gone. They are much loved family members and emotional support for all 3 of us.
Idont know what else to say. We are a good family in major distress over this. If you can find it in your heart to help us we will be forever grateful.
sincerely,

i have been homeless on numerous occasions, however did not qualify in some centers due to not having an addiction problem , overpopulation, or because I do not have children. I feel as though I am BLESSED , giving the fact that I was recognized as an individual and not because of my circumstance or treated like a number. At times I found it difficult, and tried staying with friends who claimed i could stay a specific amount of time however changed their story at a later date after promising me a permanent living situation. i like the mission program because because i am not judged on my nationality, religious preference, as I am a CHURCH goer and have a choice of churches , regarding my decision which are on the bus line or in walking distance.i have found that this particular program has assistance,or different programs for woman and children alike, even ones to fit my individual needs. i am thankful to have a place to reside until I regain appropriate housing. thank you

I became homeless due to landlord issues and had no where to go. I was on the county bus and a gentlemen told me about The Mission in Citrus homeless shelter. I called and spoke with Jim and asked if he would allow me to bring my dog with me and he said we will give it a try. My dog and i now have been here for a little over 3 months. Mr jiggles is now the mascot for the shelter. If it wasn't for the shelter and Jim allowing me to have Mr.Jingles with me i would be in the woods but gratefully he has allowed us to be together. Since arriving i have been searching for property and housing to hopefully one day own of my own. My experience here at the shelter has helped me gain confidence and a family of brothers and sisters. I am able to save money to put towards my future home. Since I have met Jim, Delva, and others that help with the shelter I have been able to gain more confidence in other people. I am very grateful and honored to have Jim as a friend for he is a great human being who has a heart for others.

The mission in citrus is a very nice and maintained place to stay, before I came here I was in the ocala national forest with 3 small children in a tent. I am very blessed my family was brought into a place that will help you in every way they can. Yes there may be rules but that is how things run smoothly and everyone helps each and everyone out. I originally had barely any clothes nor did my kids and husband we now have quite a bit. The kids have everything they need and always get a hot shower/bath.

I was staying with a family member and do to unhealthy situations I had to leave. I went to a resource center and they referred me to the Mission in Citrus. I was scared and confused but due to the people running the shelter, they helped me get settled into the Veterans shelter. My health was extremely poor and ended up in the hospital. I was able to get healthy and back on my feet again. Since then I have become able body to get around and interact with other people in my same situation. Being here i will be able to accomplish my goals in the near future. My goals include getting a vehicle and my own home, and pray that one day my family and i can resolve the past issues we have been through. I would highly recommend The Mission in Citrus to anyone who needs a place and get their life straight.

This happened to me, I’m 58, I called the VA Crisis Hotline and the next day I met with my VA representative and she made a few phone calls and made arrangements for me to come here the next day.
This is an awesome place with resources to help me get a job which in turn will let me secure a home of my own again. Don’t know what I would’ve done if it wasn’t for this sanctuary.

Hi, my name is Rick. I served in the Navy and continued to support the Military for many years. Our Country takes care to provide options for those who need help or seek guidance to adapt change that sometimes lead to homelessness. Some have medical related issues that have affected their ability to interface with the workforce and or the delays in securing employment. The Mission In Citrus Veterans Homeless shelter was founded by an individual with a focus based on the values given by God. It is through this inspiration I feel the love of an extended family of Veterans while I attempt to find and understand what the future may hold that is good and is defined by God. I see it as a brief chapter in my life's story leading to recovery with the assistance of friends in similar circumstances.

Hello. My name is David and I am newly homeless for the first time in my life. I recently turned 50. I'm probably not your stereotypical homeless guy. I tell you this because like many people in the world I thought this could not happen to me. I've always heard that many people live paycheck to paycheck and are only two weeks from homelessness. So here I am. I have a degree. Have worked at the Director level at Fortune-500 companies in retail for 25 years. I am a veteran of the US Army. I have medical certifications, training and experience. I've volunteered throughout my life so I've known a lot about homelessness from that side. Now it is me that's homeless. I want to share my story with you so that you don't end up like me and many others. Also, so that you can better understand how to help if your so inclined. If so, read on.

Because I was laid off in NC I couldn't pay my insurance which resulted in the loss of my license. While trying to work was stopped twice for expired tag, driving with suspended license and consequently went to jail over it. I had a tax return and spent every penny on my van. I lived out of my van but was able to work and live knowing I was on my way out of this horrible hole I had dug for myself. Stacking on another bad decision I purchased a tag for $10 from a man trying to save money and the tag had been stolen. I now have a “Petty theft 1st offense” conviction preventing me from working in any job in my retail or sales fields. I lost my van, my home and all of my belongings while in jail for 20 days.

I was accepted into a homeless shelter recently but their restrictions were difficult. I was ejected daily from 7am to 3pm. So I had a roof, food and bed. Now I just had to find that impossible job where I was within walking distance from 8am-2pm daily. Although my resume looks great on paper there were no retail jobs where I would pass a background check. That means my 25+ years of experience, hard work and education are now null and void. No job existed so I chose to live in the woods in a shelter I built so I could be available to work each day at a local labor pool. There were no guarantees for work just because I showed up each day at 5:30am. I have met many wonderful people while homeless including the Pastor that gave me my steel toed boots so that I may work.

I finally found out about this place where I am now. This place I call home. The Mission of Citrus. I am currently at the veterans shelter but have also been to the regular sister shelter as well. While I am grateful for the help I received at other shelters I am now much more grateful to be here. The difference is simply night and day, black and white. Between my decades of volunteer work and now recent experience being homeless I thank God I found them. The Director Jim Sleighter, the staff, volunteers as well as tenants have helped me more than I can state in this letter. They are empathetic to the Veterans problems and situations as well as respectful and loving to each other. They provide not just a roof, food and clothing but give us every tool imaginable to help us and allow us the dignity to help ourselves. They are God fearing and loving people. We have the freedom and tools to get back on our feet and back into life again. Whether your needs are transportation, legal, physical or mental medical benefits, employment assistance and training, school or education improvements, housing assistance or simply inspirational advice they seem to have it all.

I have been approved for temporary housing already. I now have a part time job and was hired for an awesome job the other day. I try to be positive but I have to assume I will fail the background check due to my Petty Theft conviction. I do have hope. My problems are fading away and are hopefully short lived. I am grateful for basics such as food and shelter. Its the other tools they offer that have made this homeless nightmare come to a positive end. Of course, I thank God for putting them in my path. They have also inspired me to continue to help others as I hope you will too. In summary please help these good people any way you can. Please support Jim Sleighter at The Mission In Citrus and others who are professionals with homeless assistance.

Sincerely,
David

PS: There is a difference between lying and being a liar. Taking a breather and being lazy. I fear that beauty and perception lye with the beholder. I do not fear that God will judge me. It is you that I fear.

The Mission in Citrus Veteran's Shelter was an absolute godsend to me.

I'd been homeless twice before in my 56 years here on earth and the situation was certainly one which I didn't want to experience again. I've no one to blame but myself as the use of illicit drugs, among a number of other bad choices I've made in my life ( I've twice attempted suicide), were the primary reasons I'd become homeless in the first place.

Up until July of this year things were looking up for me and I'd found some light at the end of the tunnel; I had a decent job and a decent place in which to live. But because of the bad health and physical pain I was in, I would end up losing it all: my job, my home, and last but not least, my sense of self-worth. Then it hit --

I was heading toward the woods, to live in the woods, actually, when I'd heard of the Mission in Citrus Shelter and made the decision to make that painful phone call, the plea for help to the Crystal River Shelter. They opened their hearts and doors to me and invited me in. After three days of living there I was told that the veteran's shelter in Inverness had room for another vet, and I am a veteran.

The day I arrived there I was welcomed with open arms and I felt so overwhelmed and loved that I thought I was in Heaven. God gave me a family that I hadn't had in years. I thank God and the Mission for being my angel from Heaven every day and will always be grateful for them. They truly care about every person that they come to know and help. I thank God from the bottom of my heart. God bless brother Jim and everyone involved in this cause.

God bless all an thank you,
Robert D. Wegman (U.S. Army veteran)

My name is Peter Swanson and I'm a disabled post-Vietnam War era veteran. I found myself homeless after Hurricane Hermine struck the west coast of Florida in Sept. 2016. And, as a result of the destruction inflicted upon the region and the storm's aftermath, I wound up "living" -- if that's what you want to call it -- in my car in the parking lot of a local mall. I called a few friends to see if they could provide any kind of help at all, only to find that they were worse off than I was. Now really finding myself in dire straits, I dialed the Mission in Citrus Veterans Shelter in Inverness and was referred to their civilian branch in neighboring Crystal River. Within two hours of being interviewed at the C.R. shelter I was assured that I wouldn't have to spend yet one more sleepless night in my car as the vet's shelter had a room and bed available. So I hopped into my car and off I went to Inverness.

Having spent time living in a shelter previously, I was yet quite unsure of what to expect on arrival at the Inverness facility, but was quite relieved once there. "This can't be a shelter", I said to myself, "this is a home." Shelter, home, whatever you want to call it, I have only good things to say about the place; good things such as:

- It's been a tremendous help in my efforts to achieve sobriety; my ongoing fight against the addictions from which I've suffered all too many years. And as I've since renewed my faith in God (the Mission's motto is, by the way, "God runs things around here") I've once again learned to put my trust in not only Him, but His people as well, and let them back into my life. That said, no resident is compelled to believe in God or to attend services; they're perfectly free to worship, or not worship, as they choose.

- I've reestablished contact with my local V.A. clinic and the medical staff is helping me to deal with other serious issues effecting my health; issues that are, for all practical purposes, here to stay. Beforehand I found myself in a very dark place indeed; but now I'm beginning to sense a light, a Presence at the end of that tunnel.

- And finally: I give my heartfelt thanks to, not only the founder and executive director of the Mission himself, Jim Sleighter, but to the mostly volunteer staff (all previously homeless themselves) who work 'round the clock to help those who find themselves in the same situation both he and they once were. I simply cannot express gratitude enough for all the good that's happened in my life since I've arrived at the Mission Shelter; and it's inspired me to help others who are now, or those may one day find themselves in, the same position I found myself. I'm truly blessed, and thank all of you so very much for all the care, guidance, and assistance you've provided to, not only me, but the countless others you've helped to get back on their feet; those who've found renewed hope in becoming proud and productive American citizens once again. May God bless you all in turn.

Knowing I would be homeless within four days, and having received no help whatsoever from the Homeless Veterans 1-800 hotline (and in state of near panic, I might add), on a whim and as a last resort I decided to look up "Shelters" in the Citrus County yellow pages. I dialed the Mission number and spoke to the executive director, Jim Sleighter, personally. I told him my situation; that I'm a 62-year-old honorably discharged Army vet in dire need of a place to temporarily stay, to hang my hat so to speak, until I got back on my feet. Jim asked one simple question of me: Do you have a copy of your DD214? (that's military discharge papers to you civilians out there). I replied yes, and Jim told me to come to the shelter whenever ready as he could always make room for one more homeless veteran. Three days later I arrived with all my belongings packed into a suitcase and a travel bag and was warmly welcomed by Jim himself and several homeless residents of the shelter.

Long story short, Jim put me into contact with several veterans-friendly organizations "not on the map", so to speak. And through HUD/VASH , and the devoted, caring labor of case worker Barbara ("Bobbie") Shaw, I was able to have a housing voucher issued to me . As social security is my only means of income (remember: I'm 62, so obviously I started collecting early retirement, and believe me, it's not much to live on) H/V will require just 30% of my income in order to pay my share of the rent in a low-income apt. complex. This is nothing short of a godsend; a lifesaver thrown to a man about to drown in a hard-enough-to-survive-in world; and I have none other than Jim to thank for it all. May God bless that man; he's sure 'nuff earned his place in Heaven -- and that you can take to the bank, my friend.

I have known of Mr. Sleighter's service to the veterans of our community since prior to the establishment of his Veteran's Shelter in Inverness in 2010 - his kindness and caring had provided food and some respit to those struggling to get on their feet - myself included. Many times, he offered to assist with a place to "get you back on the right track", yet I demurred, feeling that his services should go to those more in need than I: at the time, though I was transient and working only occasionally, I still believed myself capable of continued existence without continuous support.

Until this year.

I found myself without a place to live, struggling with depression and suicidal ideation, no work prospects, and no one who I could comfortably ask for assistance... save Mission in Citrus. I asked to borrow a tent... there were none, but the staff (tenants of the Inverness Shelter itself) were helpful and made sure I left with enough food to sustain myself a few days, and a promise Jim would pick up a tent. That very evening, Jim HIMSELF went to Wal-Mart and picked up a tent, letting me know I was welcome to pick it up... and AGAIN offered me the opportunity to stay at the shelter (with identification verification against any potential legal entanglements and a DD214 to show veterans' status).

I still felt I could do better without clogging up the facility. I mean, a grown man SHOULDN'T have to ask for help, right?

After two days of self reflection and rumination, I decided to accept his generous offer.

After two and a half years of fluctuating residency, living on the couches of others, struggling to make ends meet, feeling worthless and 'a drain on society', I meekly moved into the Inverness shelter.

Sleeping on a bed has never felt so luxurious.

A hot shower never so wonderful.

being able to clean oneself and one's clothes regularly raises the spirits.

And having (even in this secular world) someone who's Faith has built their reputation and their service in the actual spirit of that Faith, well...

An aside: As I think about this, I'm crying - tears of joy.

I have been at the Inverness shelter a little over four weeks now - as of date, I've only missed one VA appointment (my fault - worked over the weekend and overslept the morning of my lab), have had more response to my applications for employment (two offers in less than a month, as opposed to earlier attempts often going as long as a year without an interview or even notification), and will be volunteering with Mission in Citrus with their web presence and SEO for the charity overall (was asked to help... and you're darn right I will!); allowing me to put forth my best effort to advance a wish I have had for over 20 years... to help a business with it's IT department AND to advance my own interests in web marketing.

So many opportunities opening... and granting one thing long since denied (IMO): HOPE.

This place is where angels rest their wings. I have seen this.

Folks on their downside aided with the tools to get their own life back on track. It's NOT Jim's job to do so... it's a service he himself espouses as per his Christian Faith to those who gave their word and their blood to defend this nation. Not for personal gain, either... he's doing it because he WANTS to see his charges happy, healthy, living right, and ON THEIR FEET.

It's not 'a handout' around here, either. Residents are expected to be 'grown folk' about things: Keeping the bills paid, the house presentable, and all of us 'work' the facility as it's our job... because it's WE who are the 'face' of Mission in Citrus. WE who are the culinary staff, the maintenance team, the IT department (raises hand)... US. Not some outside agency, not some group reliant on outside funding (such as DVA, a church, etc.) and that is by design - it allows our facility to work with a level of autonomy for its members no other place - in this county, state, or possibly the nation - can match.

It gives we who live here a renewed faith in ourselves and our own abilities. It aids our Fraternity members who may suffer psychological issues opportunity to resocialize as men and women, as Humans. It's OUR house, so to speak... to treat with respect...

This, though a temporary shelter, is our HOME. These men and women, Fraternal brothers and sisters, our family.

And this... we'll defend.

HOOAH.

My name is Sharon Anderson. I am 60 years old and have been a guest at the Mission in Citrus for about six months. First of all.I want to express my gratitude for the mission, which took me in when i had absolutely nowhere else to go.I feel very fortunate to be here and have nothing but praise and admiration for the mission director and other staff, and all who make this place a temporary home. I think Katherine "Kat" Romanowski does an excellent job tending to the many and varied needs of those residing here. Her many responsibilities -- day and night ,on site and off-- often keep her from getting adequate rest yet she manages to stay on top of it all . And i know she doesn't do it for the money, because there just aren't enough funds available to pay her or any one else a livable wage. Even so, I have seen Kat rise to every occasion. For example ,when the septic tank was clogged this past summer , she was right there, getting her hands dirty ,cleaning up inside and clearing the way outside for the professionals which she had immediately called in. When an emergency arises ,if Kat's not on site, she drops everything to get there and deal with it. I know i feel safe with Kat in charge and sense the other residents do as well. I don't mean to imply that Kat is perfect ,because who on Earth is? However ,she does have the rare to be both congenial and compassionate friend as well as a stern house mother to one and all.Perhaps it's because she has spent time in these "homeless" shoes. I believe these attributes serve the people here well and have prompted many of them to stay in touch with her,and the mission in general long after they have moved on.

The Mission is place to get on your feet and turn your negative into a positive. The rules are fare and it is not difficult. Whatever you need they will assist you on getting it i.e job. transportation to and from, clothing, food. Some of the residence act like this is their personal home, but they eventually get over it, when people bring them to realize it. Other than that it is a great place to get on your feet and focus on you.

This Place is absolutely horrible the house drug addicts who steal and have contagious viral
issues . The "dorm" has a leaky roof & the " coordinator" Kat only cares for certain people in the home . They tell you , you can only eat a certain times even if its job related .
They don't allow you to leave for family emergency without being threaten to be kicked out .
The dorm in the lady house has a leaking roof when children lay there head , these women leave dirty sanitary items on the floors and don't know how to pick up after there self . Only certain people have to do chores and they other are worked like slaves or we get in trouble . Its absolutely nasty in the mens house as well they have people who urinate in the corner and nobody helps out the vets who cant help their self . The owner favors certain people in both Holmes and only does for certian people , they dont do background checks like there supposed to . There is women there who is on the bored who threats people and says people are free loading however they require you to pay 70 dollars a week you only have 15 min showers . It is un-fair and in my honest opinion should be shut down .

This former resident has never been a staff member. We can not please everyone, and yes, she was right. We had a leak that has now been repaired. We do our best on a very small budget, and as of today 75% of our residents have jobs or received their disability. We do not create false paper trails or deny anyone access. Anyone is able to visit at anytime and talk to our residents. As I am so very proud of them..If anyone can take drama out of a homeless shelter..good luck...You will never satisfy everyone..We pray for her...

Hello, my name is Bill. The stories are many and there are lives that have been turned upside-down for all of us who are now homeless. I am not going to give you a sob story of my own predicament because I want to give everyone hope for the future. That hope came to me by finding Mission in Citrus and Jim Sleighter who is the founder. Jim has a heart as big as the moon for the homeless. The veterans are especially close to his heart. The veterans shelter in Inverness has helped countless veterans get back on there feet. Many are now leading a happy and have a great new lease on life. If you know anyone in Citrus County that is homeless, please tell them about Mission in Citrus. We will help them if we can.

Becoming homeless has taught me to become a very humble person. Therefore, since I have been here, not only do I do my chores, but if someone can't do theirs, for one reason or another, I go ahead and do the chore for them, anyways. You need to have teamwork and cooperation with everyone in the house, to get things done. I look forward to the day when I can give back as much as I can to the mission, cause the mission has done so much for me. I roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, food in my stomach, and hopefully a direction to go, to improve my life for the better. I've been here almost a month and they are helping me with college and they help me to learn to go threw with my plans. yes sometimes it might be hard but life is hard. I love it because it helps me cope with the real life and teaches me how to live the life I'm suppose to live. I appreciate james and Kathrine for taking the time out to help me, they are very helpful and they really don't have to do this and they do. I love them for that because they take there time out of there own life to help the homeless. I just want to say I'm very proud of myself because I'm just use to getting up and doing what I have to do in order to take care of my habits. I can say I'm almost a month clean and I'm getting my G.E.D and going threw with my college. I really love you guys for this because you really did something for me and your really really appreciated thanks so much for helping me out. love Dusty

My name is diane, wow, what the mission is to me, and what they have done for me. This place shows love, comforting arms, and the feeling that I am somebody and I do have something to offer to society. I am a single parent that endured a lot some my own mistakes and some I had no control over. I came to the mission a few years ago went to a program to better my life, since then I have maintaned a job and got a car paid for and most important thing of all, i was reunited with my daughter three years ago. She is now nine years old. I can say at the beginning my faith had run dry, I am so grateful for jim who I call papa. This wondeful man built my cnfidence and most of restored my faith. thank you papa. Your heart is so huge you have put your life on hold to help others. There should be an award for your faith in all of us. Thank you for eveything the mission in citrus. God bless to all of you.

i got introduced to the mission by friends. Most of the people here are nice & appreciative. This is a good place to be & i'm glad to have found it. I would definitely recommend The Mission to anyone else who was in need of housing as long as they wouldn't take it for granted & were willing to get their lives in order. The people are good to be around & well appreciated.

i moved to Florida in January of 2015. i was scared and felt very alone at first. we stayed at my mom's friend's house for a while, maybe two or three weeks and then we had to leave. i was terrified, we had no money, no jobs, and nowhere to go. we bounced around from shelter to shelter for a while and then we found the mission in citrus in April. we weren't residents of citrus county but we were still taken in and almost immediately, i stopped feeling lonely for the first time since we moved to Florida. everyone was extremely friendly and kind and we all just kind of came together and formed a family. we support each other here and if anyone is sad or afraid, it won't be long before they'll be wrapped in a suffocating hug. if anyone were to come upon my situation, i would definitely recommend that they call the mission in citrus.

A homeless shelter? A phrase I never imagined in my 54 years of life describing as my residence.
I had a decent middle class life. I left home in New England 1982, enlisted in the United States Air Force, got married, had a child and for 18 years enjoyed being the "Kool-Aid" mom.
2003, changed my serene existance forever.
My husband of 21 years, retired Air Force 1st Sgt, Licensed National Board Certified Mental Health Counselor was arrested for abusing the female inmates he was trusted to help.
He obviously lost his job, license, reputation and will to even try. We divorced a year later, and my daughter graduated high school and left for college. two people out of my family of three were gone, I found a job after a short time, but my stress and coping skills didn't jive. I gave up.
My ex left without looking back, agreed to division of property in court, but fell short of fulfilling that.
I eventually lost my job, then my house. I went to stay with family in Atlanta, but needed to come back to Florida.
The friends I enjoyed at one time, no longer answered messages, phone calls, even face to face visits.
I spent through my savings staying at hotels and even my vehicle. I was homeless.
I tried several places to stay, but the religious requirements and lack of opportunity at these places, to seek employment left me no choice to leave them.
I felt literally at the "end of my rope" Suicidal and despondent.
One more call, the Mission of Citrus.
I was more than welcomed. I was thanked. I served this country in the USAF, and Jim Sleighter wants no vet to ever be without. I had a home.
I contribute no where near what it must take to make this possible for me and other women, vet or not. I can without doubt, help with household chores, cook, clean, seek employment, with the secure feeling of a safe place to live.
My story is abominable to me, but I find myself wondering what is the face of homeless in America? The PTA mom/vet , the young mother with substance issues, the Wall Street banker?
It can happen anytime to anyone. I was more than fortunate to come across the Mission in Citrus. I hope this saving grace of a place can continue to be a save haven for those who fall short and need the "hand up not the hand out". Any agency, private or public that can contribute to help this home help other women like myself, get back out there to normalcy, helps end this homelessness.

I came across the Mission in Citrus two years ago when I was thrown out of my parents and only stayed for three days. Two years later I was staying with a friend but was asked to leave and my step dad brought me back to the Mission. I think its a great place to stay speaking as a Veteran. They have provided me with a place to stay with food to eat and donations of clothes and food for me to choose from. I would recommend this place to anyone who needs a place to stay because they have people here that are willing to help you get a job and back on your feet. And they people are easy to get along with.

I was refered here from another shelter, in another county. I was definitely scared when I first got here. However, all the women try to keep the house functioning like a family. If I wasn't allowed to come here, I'm not sure where my children & I would b now. The information & help with getting the things I need has been beyond what I expected. I'm most grateful that I was allowed to be here.

I came here with the clothes on my back nowhere to go and no where to stay. I was given a place to stay food to eat and a roof over my head. I am very grateful for their generosity here. I even got sick and had to go stay in a nursing home for a while and then I was allowed to come back I had no place to go at this time either. If it wasn't for the help of the mission in citrus I would have been living in the woods after just getting out of rehab. I would most definitely recommend this place to anyone else

I came here 7 months ago. I didn't have anywhere to go and my family didn't want to do anything to help. I had gotten myself into trouble and didn't have anywhere to turn. I found the mission in citrus and I gave him a call. When I called at first they said they didn't have no bed I was devastated.a little while later my phone ring and it was the mission telling me to go ahead and come in that they had a place for me. I was scared. I had never been homeless before my life and I didn't know what to expect. I went in and I was greeted with smile. The staff and everyone there were very nice they welcomed me in like I was family. everyone here has helped me set goals and follow through with them. It has made me a more humble person. I have had the pleasure of working with other homeless people here. I am very grateful for the experiences that I have learned here. I have learned that there are a lot of great people in this world. And there is kindness and love in our world still. I don't think I would have found these things out as soon as I did if it hadn't been for the mission in citrus. I just wish there were more places like this in our community where people could come when they fall on hard times and no that there is someone there that cares and is willing to help them. I just want to thank everyone and the mission in citrus for giving me a chance and helping me out. I am forever grateful thank you.

I used to a resident at the Mission. I am an honorably discharged veteran and i am very grateful for what the Mission did for me and my son. I was welcomed with open arms and was helped to get on my feet. The staff and residents were very helpful to the both of us. The Executive Director helped to understand my son better when he would have his meltdowns due to his autism. Now my son has gone from having meltdowns to talking to someone when he feels like he is getting upset. He is also getting straight A's in school and has been getting them for the last 3 years. I am now getting my VA disability every month and we are now living in an RV that was donated to the Shelter that was given to us and we have it up at Dan's Clam Stand. I am now getting a house built through Habitat for Humanity so that we can once again have what we had lost so many years ago. I would have been lost if my son and I weren't picked up at the local Greyhound Bus Station just over 3 years ago by my brother and dropped off at the Shelter. Even though I am back on my feet, I still go back to the Shelter and help them out whenever they need the help. I have found where GOD wants me and what HE wants me to do with my life. I have also found my FAITH once again since we have been at the Shelter. THANK YOU JIM AND EVERYONE WHO HELPS TO RUN THE MISSION FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU GUYS HAVE DONE FOR ME AND MY SON!!!!!!!!!!!

They accepted me as I am and didn't discriminate against my religion! An opened me up to the experience to help other people and has shown me friendship! I think the mission is a good place to help others and be!

The mission in citrus is a blessing for the less fortunate who have encountered unfortunate circumstances in their lives. It is a place where no one is judged, and everyone is treated like a person instead of a statistic. After loosing my sons father, i was graciously embraced, and received things to help ease the burden of such a horrible time in our lives, and am still reached out to by Jim to assure we are doing ok. People have a stereo type of the homeless, and most times shy away, but fail to realize that at anytime, it could happen to them. Illnesses, deaths, financial, and even emotional hardships are not prejudice to anyone...it is a fact of life, and sadly it happens daily to folks just like me and you. Jim and his staff work diligently to help as many people as they can reach, up to and INCLUDING children, and infants. God bless.

I have been at the mission in Citrus Veterans shelter for 4 years now. Over the past 2 years I had to fight cancer and beat it. Two and a half years ago I started to have severe tremors and now because I had a great VA doctor I am tremor free. I now have rods in my spine and am diabetic. I also have to wear a shoe that has a 2 inch lift on it. How many shelters do you know that would go through all of these problems that one man would have. At one time I was going to leave the mission but when I told my doctor my plans she told me that with my health the way it is I need to stay right where I'm at. Dr. Kirchech told me that I couldn't be in A better place. Now I am able to help out the Mission that I love so much and praise god for every day I wake.

I'm proud to donate my time and resources to the Mission in Citrus. They are saving lives in our community and providing people with a hand up not a hand out. The Director and The Board work tirelessly to help people get their lives back in order with dignity and compassion,
They not only provide a secure environment for the residents, they offer assistance in areas like job training and money matters, they help them in obtaining the resources they need to get back on their feet, help obtaining health and dental care etc.
The Mission strives to keep families together, help Veterans in need, and in general give people HOPE.
I'm grateful they exist in times like these and I'm grateful to know such a wonderful organization.

I first came to the mission four years ago, my ex husband had sold our home in new jersey and had abandoned me, I came to florida to reconcile with him, and things did not work out, I only had one night left in the hotel and was facing being on the streets with all my belongings, I asked the lady at the hayes motel for shelters in the area, and she gave me an article about the mission in citrus, I called and spoke to Jim, and he told me he had a bed and to come on over the next day, he even provided a ride for me. I was nervous when I first came here, but everyone was so warm and welcoming, that I started to relax and feel right at home, They helped me get food stamps and gave me time to find employment. I even met my husband here. The Mission in citrus is such an awesome shelter, everyone is so warm, friendly and welcoming. It"s more like a home than a shelter. It"s the best shelter in citrus county. They truly offer a hand up, not a hand out. They do everything they can to help you become independent and get back on your feet.

My name is Dan, I came to the Mission in Citrus on 7/9/14 after two weeks of hospitalization in a dual-diagnosis facility for depression and substance abuse. I had never been to a shelter, nor had ever been in such a state as how I came to be here, without home, vehicle, money, food, even clothing. The Mission is amazing, I have been given a bed, clothing, food, a sober facility and structure to remain sober, and encouragement to find work and get back onto my feet, Two weeks later I am amazed at how well this facility helps the community and think it should be recognized as a model for all shelters across the country, if only more homeless and despondent people could be blessed so much. Thank You all who donate anything to the shelter(s), including time and resources.

I am a 49 year old female. I was homeless. I called around Citrus County all the way up to Jacksonville to at least 15 different shelters. I was turned down by all except Mission in Citrus because of my health and physical ability. I had a stroke back in October 2013. All turned me down because I have to have a walker to assist my walking. I was told if I couldn't work and stand for 8 hours they couldn't assist me. Mr. Jim and the Mission took me in like family, willing to help any way they can. I was and am treated like family not like a outcast.

I found my son and myself homeless, and scared to death. I couldn't imagine where we were going to end up, and I was told about The Mission of Citrus. I called and was greeted with such warmth on the phone and eased my mind. I felt awful cause all I did was cry. The next day I was brought to the Mission and when I drove up, I was surprised that it looked like a real home. I walked up and was greeted with such warmth, love and understanding. My we were welcomed with opened arms into a home an not just a house. This man Papa Jim took my son and myself in and all my son can say is that Papa rescued me and my mommy. The short time I have been here they have been loving, friendly and given us the tools to help us have something in life, I didn't think was possible. They have show grace and loving mercy. If it wasn't for Papa Jim and the Mission we would not have a chance because no one has ever loved and cared for us in my life. We have a chance because of this man who my son calls his rescuer and he is.

I have been working with Mission In Citrus since December of 2013 as a Case Manager. They are a homeless shelter in Citrus County FL whose police is "If we don't help them - who will?" The Executive Director goes above and beyond when it comes to the residents. We work on establishing resident needs and then finding ways to meet those needs with the resources we have. If there is a will - there is a way.

I am just a willing vessel for the Lord. I have found over the years that Pastor Jim has a heart of gold. He goes endless days and nights without rest just to be sure the needs of people in this community are met. He fights for a good cause and pushes people to be their best. Pastor Jim is truly on a MISSION FROM GOD and may his efforts be richly rewarded. Many abundant blessings to Pastor Jim and all the residents who have come through these doors.

The first day I met Pastor Jim I knew his heart was to help the homeless. I have watched him help so many people in need regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. His shelter has given people hope, love, spirituality, and forgiveness. He treats others as equal and never looks down on people. His mission is to help the homeless but at the same time is also on a mission from God. I believe because of his faithfulness to serve the homeless and the Lord he is rewarded in more ways than money could ever buy. May he continue in good health and in good spirits with the Lord's hand of protection around each and every person there. God Bless You Pastor Jim. Just a quiet Angel sent to help.

JUNE,26 2009 I was riding my bicycle on the side of the road 19 in Homosassa Fla. When I stopped and talk to a man who was known as Hobo Joe. A homeless man. I ask him him where he lived and he told me where evr he could find a a place to lay his head. Then I told him about a program I was at and who was the director and he told me that he left that place not happy.Well at the time I was not happy there either. Hobo Joe told me about the Mission in citrus homeless shelter and that I should go and talk to a man name Jim. He told me what Jim looked like , That he was a big man. So I road my bicycle al the way from Homosassa to Crystal River and found the mission in citrus homeless shelter. It so happens that the big man Jim was standing right out side. I road up to him and told him that Hobo Joe sent me to him to talk to him about geeting into his shelter. And I told him all about me and how I was a country boy raise out of the Ocala National Forrest, That I know how to fish, hunt, track and trap animals. And he then said to me. Do you know that "GOD" sent me to him. And I said no how. He said you just told me you can track animals . can you track people also. I said yes That I can tell the differance between Animal trails and human trails. Then he ask me if I would go out and track and find people in the woods and bring them back to the shelter so we can help them. And I said yes. Then my job in the shelter as we called it bicycle patrol began. Jim really took me under his arm and loved me and taught me alot about love that I did not have in me. And the love from total strangers was so much of a spiritual builder in the mission in citrus that I was at total peace. Each person had there place and job to up hold in the shelter and no one had to ask for help because if someone saw someone needing help they would just join right end and help without being told . they did it out of love for that person in need of help. I have never in my life seen or felt so much love as the LOVE that I felt in a place with people that I did not know than the mission in citrus homeless shelter. People who came from all back grounds of life came together as one happy family full of love for each other working together to help other nw comers coming into the shelter. I WILL SAY "GOD" is the focus in the shelter. people are not made to go to church in there but they go everyone of them. And Boy at the Miracles that I witnessed in the shelter was Amazing, Finacial Miracles, Physical Miracales, Savational Miracales. I am now out and working and living life on lifes terms a better man, a changed man in my heart because of the love that "GOD" showed me in the mission in citrus homeless shelter that was giving to me from people that loved me for who I was and did not judge me for the things in my past but help me get up and go forward to my future. So I say , don't judge people for their past, don't kick a dog when their down, Help people to a better future, give a hand to help them up. And he has no sin cast the first stone. One last words to say. THANK YOU. "GOD" For Mission In Citrus Homeless Shelter. And thank you for Jim Sleighter.

Hello, I came to the Mission the first of November after getting out of Jail on probation. I had nowhere to go, I was living with my mother-in-law but she passed away when I went to jail. I have been working on getting my kids back and finding a place of my own. The Mission has helped me get around to all of places I need to go to get back on my feet. They are so kind and open hearted to everyone. I am extremely thankful for all of their help and assistance!

I became homeless on December 1, 2013 and Citrus County Officer Deputy Bruno informed to go to a shelter on Grover Cleveland in Homosassa. It was called The Grace House. When I went there, they informed me that I was too much of a high risk individual and they did not want me there because of all my medical conditions. So they gave me the phone number and address to The Mission and told me to go there because they couldn't help me. So I came here in a renter U-Haul and Mr. Jim said I could stay and I've been here ever since. I was terrified being first time homeless; they all made me feel welcomed.

We fell on hard times and a friend took us by there and they were so kind and respectful and have always been helpful with any problem that has come up along the way. They have most of the time had an answer to whatever the situation was at the time without feeling left out in the cold. The group at the mission is a very caring group that can do a lot of good for what little we have to work with at times.

Only been here one night, but its clear that the facility is clean and sanitary. The residents are kind and are well supplied with hygene, so personal upkeep is good. This place seems like it has got the people that are well intended and willing to help. I have a great amount of freedom and that is great.

The Mission in Citrus is an inter-faith homeless shelters with four locations serving veterans, women and children and families. The Mission in Citrus serves over 90 % of the large number of the homeless in Citrus County, Florida. It constantly has to fight the county government administration who feels that homelessness does not exist in Citrus County. The Mission also serves countless homeless in the woods throughout Citrus County. If given the opportunity the Mission in Citrus could eliminate homelessness in Citrus County.

The annual budget to serve over 1,200 souls in 2013 is less than other homeless organizations marketing budgets with only 35 people being served.

I have been a client at the mission twice now and both times I have been helped in many more ways than any other shelter that I have been in. Jim has been very helpful and kind and you would be hard pressed to find a better friend to the homeless than him. He took my wife and I in after my mom moved to Georgia and left me without a home, my wife's father lost his home to foreclosure and left her without a place also so the mission was the one place I knew that we could get help.

The homeless in rural Florida have proven what I believed in all along. That they could help each other without paid staff, when given the proper resources. Homeless veterans, men, women, and children have shown that they can take a hand up, instead of a handout, and get their lives back in order. In less than three years there were five shelters; two for homeless Veterans.

We recently closed one shelter because the Mission in Citrus eliminated 75% of the homeless Veteran problem in Citrus County, and due to the slowdown in our present economy. Our shelters are geared to operate at the lowest cost, and to be moved or closed when necessary. They are located close to jobs and resources.

Close to 450 former residents still keep in contact with me through email, Facebook, or phone. I am so very proud of them, as their accomplishments are no less than a miracle. We are not faith based but live by faith. No one is forced to go to church, but over 90% attend services each week at the church of their choice. Our saying is that God runs things around here. And He does. Miracle after miracle has occurred during the past four years. A Good Samaritan to all in need. We are struggling now, as we have been denied funding because we do not have anyone who can write grants properly. But we are working on that. And all of the praise, glory, and honor, we give to God for all His blessings.

Over two thousand people were helped back into society since 2009, by using fewer dollars and more sense. Their success record is 80%, which is much higher than the national average. There are no security cameras or locked doors. Our foundation is based on that no one should lose their freedoms that so many Veterans have died for, unless they are a criminal. Since February 1st 2013, over 42 people moved into homes with jobs. That may seem small to many, but it was over 50% of our residents living at our shelters. Fourteen were children. Five were entire families.

Our 1st Veteran's shelter was opened on less than $5000, and a lot of faith. It is now approaching its fourth year of operation. Veterans have returned to society into their own homes after receiving their much deserved benefits. Similar shelters were built using millions. Formerly homeless Veterans run the shelter, after being helped themselves. All give a volunteer commitment. Fund raising is now in progress to increase their capacity. Our second shelter was designed after the John Wayne-type outposts in the old west. In rural areas, the homeless have to walk between 12-50 miles for help and services. The outpost provided meals, shelter, laundry, showers, and much more. It served many Veterans living in the woods and swamps, and those traveling around the country. The model was highly successful, before it’s closing due to lack of funds... Our next project is a mobile command center called Angels on Wheels. It will be able to help Veterans in any area with full service. The mobile vehicle will enable the Mission in Citrus to reach out to many Veterans, who are currently receiving little to no help.

“If we do not help them, who will?”

The Mission in Citrus Homeless Shelters were founded in 2008, after the Executive Director “I “became homeless. My research and personal experience showed that traditional shelters were not working, and too much of their budgets were spent on administration expenses, and not on the residents. Too many criminalized homelessness. Most of the homeless are not criminals; they just need the resources to get their lives back in order. A hand up, not a hand out. The focus is on jobs, and our Hire the Homeless program has been highly successful. The residents also help operate the shelter by paying for their upkeep with donations, once they find employment or receive disability. They volunteer thousands of hours to Habitat for Humanity, area food banks, Sertoma Club, Lion's Club, and many other nonprofits. No one is allowed to sit around. All earn their keep.
We have overcome many obstacles in the past four years, from 60 tents to 5 shelters. We had major fights with everyone from the Fire Marshal, Sheriff’s Dept., and many other agencies, including County Commissioners. We now have positive working relationships with all of them. We have earned their respect. We still have a long way to go.

Grant writing is hard because there is little time after helping so many people each day. We beg for 80% of our operating funds using collections sites, such as Wal-Mart, and County flea markets. Over 1000 people were helped last year with $120,000. The Mission in Citrus continues to fight for homeless rights. Our emails are sent to numerous government officials each day. Homelessness can decrease through more accountability of dollars. One shelter gets Federal funds, while operating at an annual cost of $38,000 a bed. It is cheaper to go to Harvard.

Our residents age from four days old to 72 years old. The new face of homelessness has become many homeless women and children. We are expecting two new babies in the next month. The days of the old homeless stereotype are over. The present economy is taking no prisoners.
Our long term goals are to share our system with others, and to increase our homeless Veterans beds by 150 by buying a motel. We soon hope to start a successful in-house drug and alcohol treatment shelter. The Mission in Citrus could easily become a movie as so many miracles have occurred there. When I turned 51 last year, over 200 former residents visited, Face booked, emailed, or called. That does not happen at normal shelters.

They take great pride as they have become a family, and lift each other up. We have two quotes. “If we do not help them…Who will? “And “We follow the parable of the good Samaritan.” We help all in need. In our history, we have never failed to feed and help anyone who has entered our gates. We even take food and water into the woods and swamps for many hard core Veterans, who have lost faith in society.

About The Mission in Citrus

Our Mission is to help all in need to the best of our ability. We follow the parable of the Good Samaritan, as there are no requirements for our services. We constantly reinvent the wheel to make it all work. The faces of homelessness can change as well as each individual’s circumstances. And there have been very few that we have not been able to help. Veterans have become our priority as we have seen their suffering the most.

To all the past and present residents of the Mission in Citrus. I am so very proud of you. You made it work. God gave us the direction and help through many. God bless you all and much Love to all of you

James M Sleighter – Founder and Executive Director of the Mission in Citrus

I heard about the place from a friend of mine and looked it up on the internet website. When i got here, I was welcomed with open arms. I have only been here 2 1/2 days but it feels like I've been here longer because of the environment and the people are marvelous. It seems like home.

I thought the dog here was vicious when I first saw him, but now I'm going to miss him. His name is Mission.

Jim, the diirector, is like a father figure. In fact, there are several women here who are like mothers: Sheila, Carol, Catherine, Kit-Kat (tell her to lay off the sugar) and Jane. you all will be truly missed.

I am responding in regards to what hillb6 wrote about the Mission, its directors, and the clients that are here. You say that he has taken money from a client and her son and left them stranded there. Well I have news for you, I was the client that DONATED the money out of my VA settlement out of the goodness of my heart for being allowed to stay here for over a year so that I could get the help to get my VA disability. And I was not left stranded here, I chose to stay on and help others since it is my way of saying thank you to Jim and the other directors here who have helped both me and my son. If it wasnt for me and my son coming to the Mission, I wouldnt have a child who has done a complete 360 in his behavior not to mention his grades at school. My son has accomplished something that I never had the chance to do and he has been getting straight As all year long. You have no one to blame for the treatment that you received but yourself. Jim had taken you back numerous times out of the goodness of his heart but like he always says you cant help the ones who dont want the help. Just because you had a bad experience doesnt mean that the rest of us have. As for women going in and out of Jim's office all hours of the night is not true. Dont say things when you dont have the evidence to back your accusations up. The Mission is mine and my son's home since no one else has been there to take us in and help us like Jim has. I am proud to be a client and a FAMILY MEMBER of the Mission Family!!!!!!!!!!!

This review is written in regard to the hillbilly who posted The Mission's director had a pot problem. First, you are an idiot; second, the director is Jim; third; the lady you referenced does not have a problem. If you are going to make accusations about us, The Mission (which I PROUDLY call my home), make sure you have something to back it up. Jim has been nothing short of a saint when it concerns you. He never had to take you back as many times as he did. You should be thanking him, not trying to smear his good name and the name of the Mission. You were dismissed from here for good reasons, and probably should have been sooner than it was. You were given chance after chance to prove yourself but never took any of them. You have burned every bridge you have crossed. Even the guys in the woods don't want you around, but we all know you can't survive out there anyway. You have no one to blame but yourself.

How I got to the mission? I was pretty much put out of where I was living since mid april of 2012.
Then ended up living in a motel for 2 months. Then stayed for about a month with another family
member. Finally, I started calling shelters, and came across the Mission in Citrus. Once I arrived here, I was a lil worried what it would be like. I soon came to find that here, there is a family. James is the FATHER OF ALL RESIDENTS ;-) This man has a HEART that is AMAZING! He loves and protects all
of us as if we was his own flesh and blood. He makes sure that we don't go without. The kids here
are well taken care of and wants for nothing, if he can help it. The people here are like MOTHERS, GRANDMOTHERS, AUNTS & COUSINS & UNCLES. We look out, protect, cook, work, help, etc as a family should. James has taught us to love one another and that even tho we are homeless, we do matter and we do have a purpose in life. He has also taught us to have FAITH. I don't know what else to say about my experience here at the mission, except that, I am glad that I found them. I have been blessed to have found my new found extended family. I thank James for establishing the mission, and for being the MAN that he is.

I came to the mission after my ex-husband left me with no place to go. He sold our home in new jersey and left me stuck. I flew down to florida to try and reconcile, things didnt work out. I was stuck at the hayes motel with no money and no place to go. I asked the lady at the front desk about shelters in the area, and she gave me the number for the mission in citrus. I called and spoke to jim, i told him my situation, and the next day harry and dave picked me up and brought me to the shelter. I'm gla.d. t.h.e mission was there for me. Everyone there hwas so wonderful and friendly. They made me feel so welcome and loved. Like one big family. They helped me to heal from all my ex put me through and helped me find myself. I even met my new hushand there. We've been together for almost three years and we have a wonderfullittle boy. The mission saved my life. It is a wonderful shelter with awesome people. I think it is the best shelter out there. They really give you a hwnd up and not a hand out. They actually help you get back on your feet and they dont judge you.

I am so proud and honored to be on the Board of The Mission in Citrus County. My heart is for people and that is the heart of Jim Sleighter, the Director. (I believe that is why God connected us ...love for people) Jim is not a man of politics but a man of compassion, who truly cares and is concerned for the homeless. There are so many misconceptions about the homeless, but I still have fond memories of the first time I walked into the shelter....the warmth and the love. I pray that God will bless this ministry beyond measure as Jim continues to do what God has called him to do in spite of hardships and trials. "Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me...Inasmuch as you do it unto one of the least of these my brethen you did it unto Me. Matt. 25: 34-36; 40. This passage truly describes the heart of Jim Sleighter.

I have been connected to the Mission In Citrus for about 18 months. The church that I minister to began interacting with the people from the MIC. It has been a great blessing to me and to my church. The MIC is truly a unique place. It is a place where people are caring, loving, willing to hold another to account, willing to give so that the MIC can sustain its ministry. Lives are being changed. The residents there are not looking for a handout, but need a hand to help them out of their current difficulty. As the only emergency shelter , their door is always open to help someone. I am convinced that the MIC is able to do more with less than any other organization I know of. Jim and the volunteers are doing a great job providing help to all who need it. Just because an individual is homeless does not mean that they are not important. That is evident from the minute you walk into the shelter.

I work with the homeless students in Citrus County. I attend Community meetings in Citrus County and work with people from other counties that also serve homeless students. I know firsthand what a blessing it is to have a place that will allow children to stay when their family is need. There are many counties in Florida that do not have any type of Shelter and most cannot take children. It is such a joy to see children safe, clean, fed and ready to go to school without worrying where they will sleep at night. Thank you, Jim and all of the Missions’ supporters. Great things come from a Manger.

My mother Sheila Douglas is the director of the Mission in Citrus. I came out there on my mother's birthday in July of 2011 after not seeing her for 11 years talking about a birthday surprise. I was in an abuse situation with my husband and needed to get away. So me and my youngest son at the time he was 3 months hopped on a Greyhound in Baton Rouge and headed for the mission. James paid for my bus ticket, and when I arrived there were maybe 40 people standing there at the mission with open arms literally, I had received hugs from every person there. When they say Louisiana is known for their hospitality, the they have no idea about the mission. I felt so welcomed and loved I made some amazing new friends and had so much love and support. I will defiantly return for a Thank You visit. I love the mission and everyone there I promise the mission in Citrus is a true blessing from our Lord and savior. See for yourselves take a visit and I promise you will see the positivity that I saw and still see. Thank you Mission and Citrus!!!!!!!!! ;)

So many lives, so many ages, so many genders all in serious need. The needs are all different from food, shelter, medical, education and jobs. Looking at the men, women, and children as they struggle to pull themselves back up into independence is not easy. When I am there at the Mission in Citrus trying to help, I see much caring by all and this isn't just those that are in volunteer positions to help. It is everyone there. They all care about others and are always lending a helping hand. With being able to find an open arm environment at the MIC, so many are able to look at their lives, do what is needed, get back to work and stabilize themselves. Isn't that what we all want? With so much healing that has happened at the MIC, lives are being changed! Each person there has their own story, definitely in need and working on their own needed individual goals. When this happens, the MIC is very thankful because the MISSION IN CITRUS is in existence to be help!

As a volunteer with the mission, I have come to believe, that The Mission in Citrus is a true lifeline to many women, men, and children who are in need of assistance with their basic life needs. Being founded by a man who became homeless himself, the grounding of the mission is to help all. After dealing with the immediate needs of food and shelter, the ultimate goal of the mission is to help individuals deal with their own needs, rise above them in whatever way is needed (medical, educational, emotional, etc.) and regain their independence. While this is going on, all residents take part in maintaining the mission whether it is office, building and grounds maintenance, transportation, etc. needs; they all pitch in and keep the day-to-day operation going with the end resulting in everyone becoming a part of the Mission in Citrus family. The mission has grown from their original housing to 5 shelters with one being specifically for veterans who have become homeless. With all ages arriving at the mission, the need has grown rapidly in our small rural county and the mission has been an immense part of helping put many lives back together. When lives have been broken and individuals have no where to go, the Mission in Citrus is always there to give help and hope for the future; and to be able to observe this in the lives of many men, women and children has been a life-changing experience.

When I arrived at The Mission in Citrus, I was homeless, jobless, alone, and scared out of my mind. I was welcomed into the family type atmosphere with open arms, given the emotional support I so desperiately needed. Jim the director helped me get a job housekeeping in a hotel. I quickly worked my way up to front desk. A year after I arrived at the Mission I was living on my own, have a job that I love, a new family and friends I'll keep for a lifetime. There is no better place in the world to start over when you have nothing. Thank You Jim and all of the staff members of The Mission in Citrus. God Bless You!

I had gotten in contact with The Mission in Citrus when my family couldnt help no longer with housing. We had been staying in a hotel for 3 days before I could get a free bus ride to the shelter. They were full, but was willing to take my husband and 2 children in no questions asked. Jim, the director of The Mission in Citrus helped us with bus tickets to Mississippi where a friend of my husband had told us he could get us jobs and a place to live. We only stayed a week, but everyone here welcomed us as family. This has definately been the most life changing experience of my life, and I wish Jim and everyone at the shelter the best of luck!

hi my name is janice groom . i am 18 and in the 12 grade i have been in and out of foster care for most of my life. my father was deported in 2007 back to El salvador and my mother is in a nursing home suffering from brain cancer . with all of that going on my twin sister and i had found ourselfs homeless .the mission for me has been a blessing in our desperate time of need. walking in i felt scared and alone, that was until the staff greated me with open arms. they made me feel like part of a family. they have showed me so much love never making me feel hopeless always there to incourage me when feeling down on life. i belive the mission is an amazing place for a fresh start. the staff really care about how you feel , always willing to help you with what ever it is you need to . the mission will teach you alot about yourself, it is a good safe place to grow and mature into a productive member of your community. being here will teach you team work, as well as being independent. we each have our own responsibility in tending to house work. the mission makes it a priority in finding a job. they always keep your spirits up in incouraging you to getting back out on your own. i feel the mission is a blessing to have for people who need some help in what could be the lowest part of their life. the mission really cares about the well being of the people that come in and out . they want to help and see them grow in every aspect of their lives. wheather that be mentally, physicaly, emotionally, or spiritually. if we need someone to pray with, or just someone to talk to they are here for you. if you want to go to church they will get you there. always there for you , never to judge, but lisen and give you support when you have no one else. we have group meetings every day . there is also alot of group stuff we do to. its kind of like group theripy it is optional ,you do not have to be recovering from drugs you can just go to learn life skill and tehecnics that can help you cope through the struggles of life. although i have not been here long i strongly belive that the misson is an amazing constructive place to grow.

We shared opinions on how to help people and what the perfect shelter would be. But then he left and I was sad. I felt led to come to the Mission In Citrus to help Jim (Papa Bear). He has a big heart and likes to help people and see people help themselves. God runs the Mission 100%. Jim has helped me alot and I look up to him.

I was in The Mission in Citrus for about 3-4 months. James was a great guy - helped me out when he could. I had to go to probation and he always made sure I got there. They recieve donations of clothes which help everyone dress for jobs. One month after beginning my stay at the mission, God showed himself to me through a friend I had made there. James uses a Christian influence, without forcing everyone under it. He requires everyone to leave Mon-Fri to look for work, and on Sundays you have to leave in the morning until noon. He doesn't require you to go to church, but there is ample opportunity with multiple vehicles. When I first went in I was sleeping in a tent - as people moved out Jim moved others into the houses. Since then the tents have all been taken down unfortunately. Jim pushed the idea of opening my own business and going back to school, while working with local churches for others to get them to other states where they needed to be. Now I'm involved with another non-profit that works with several missions, and we love to help Jim when we can.

I have started receiving my disability last year and was able to purchase a RV. Jim has been quite a mentor to me. I have learned a great deal of patience since I have been here. Ever since my divorce and the many medical problems that I have developed along the way, as well as my alcohol abuse, I have not been able to hold down a job. I applied for Social Security Disabiliy and was approved. This allowed me to be able to get help from Veterans's Mission in Citrus, Fl. I have only been here for two weeks, however what I have recieved from my stay here, is an extremely comfortably clean place to lay my head. I have stayed in many shelters and this one is most assuredly the most pleasant in which I have been. There is plenty of food to eat and entertainment.

All we could do was write letters but it wasnt the same because i couldnt give her a hug or kiss through a letter. I cried for 4 days straight when i couldnt see her. It was tough not even seeing her through summer when we first got there to visit i didnt leave her side and didnt play with the other kids at all. jim sleighter is the best papa i ever had. Came to the Mission last year after being a single mother to my 3 year old, by myself, due to my husband leaving because he couldn't find a job. I came to the Mission after loosing custody of my daughter due to me having no means of taking care of her. I didn't care about anything due to loosing my daughter. I didn't do the things I was suppost to do while I was here, I left after 4 months, and my life got alot worse. I ended up coming back getting a second chance here 4 months ago and I am proving everyone wrong. I have been working for the past three months at Fat Daddy's Roadhouse Bar and Grill and I love it. Now I am doing good in hopes of getting custody back of my both my children and hopefully beable to get my own place soon, but first I need a vehicle. I would recomend this place to everyone, friends, and family. Thanks to Jim Sleighter giving me a second chance I wouldn't be doing good like I am.

We all do it because we see a program that is non-traditional but IT WORKS!!!! The Mission has results unheardof. I am also a Member of Mission in Citrus Inc.'s Board of Directors. This charity is on it's way to bigger and better things, and I just wish we had more dedicated volunteers willing to help us with grants and fundraising, then this mission will have the funds it needs to operate and have programs desparately needed for the residents. What little programs this mission has its amazing the people it has helped.

The mission in citrus is the best shelter group I have ever seen. They all survive on donations, that unfortunately they have to beg for. They have helped so many people, it is truly amazing. It is easy to see that they are a faith based organization and they give God all the glory. Everyone please please donate to this group. They do so much with so little. I first began donating when the shelter first opened and now they have grown to over 5 shelters!!! They help people find jobs, offer hope when it seems imposible. If I could only give to one organization this would be it

I am always amazed at how they do so much with so little. Their finances are thread bare, and even though those running the Mission do receive a salary they remain dedicated. The homeless at the Mission act like a family. Those fortunate to enough to find work provide a significant part of the financial support required to run the Mission. Becoming homeless is not something any of us want to happen to us, but the people at the Mission somehow manage to keep a positive attitude. This speaks highly of the homeless and the highly of the leadership at the Mission.

I am very proud of the homeless and have been blessed since I founded it in 2008. They have proven that they can help each other without paid staff when given the proper resources.

My name is Scott and I'm a USMC and US Army veteran. A traumatic event in November 2010 left me jobless, penniless, without a support network, and homeless. I reached out to many nonprofit homeless shelters for immediate assistance but none responded. I was making plans, to my utter horror, to live in the woods when Jim Sleighter of Mission in Citrus contacted me. With his help I was able to find long-term housing in Gainesville and now I recently accepted a good job offer from the Veterans Administration. I've come a long way in the past 2 years, but I didn't come alone. Thank you, Jim.

I just want to say thank you for all the help that you have giving me and my daughter. Without the Mission in Citrus we would be on the street and my daughter would be taken away from me. Jim has been there for me no matter what has been going on with me and won't give up. On the homeless no matter what the cost.

It was a few years ago, i had just gotten out of jail, and couldn't return back to where i used to call home, so now left with nothing, and unable to go back and get my belongings, i called a few people whom i concidered to be friends, but low and behold, i quickly found out who my friends where, it took me a lil time to figure that out though, i struggled with the fact of not knowing what i was going to do, who do i turn to, thats when i turned to someone i would do anything for, and that man is James Sleighter, and te friends and family at the mission in citrus, he took me in when no one else would, showed me the way i should live and prayed for me, as he does anyone who steps through the door, im also glad to know that if anything ever happens where i need a place to stay, i have my good friend and someone im proud to call a brother James Sleighter, thanks so much!!!

My name is ashley. I am a twenty-six your old with three children all under the age of eight. My husband and I have been married going on eight years. Recently my husband has became physically enabled, his spine is deterioating and had to quit working. On top of that I had also lost my job. Like day to night we went to living pretty decently to winding up in our very small compact car, My husband, three children and I literally had Only the clothes that were on our backs. Parking the car in some nearby woods and diving the dumpsters at night just to keep the hunger pains out of our bellys. Listening to my children cry from hunger until they fell asleep drove me to the brink of suicide. I knew that my husband and I could not take it no longer. From out of no where someone had told us of the missions in crystal river florida. Mind you we had been on the phone for half a day looking for a shelter and not a single soul would help us. When we told "papa" Jim about our situation without a thought he told us to come and that he would NEVER have children and a family live that way. That day we came here we were fed a wonderful meal, we were givin clean clothing and had a warm bed to sleep in. Since then the mission has takin us in and made us family. My children have three healthy meals a day and even the occasional happy meal from "papa". They love him and he loves them back as if they were his own. I have NEVER in my life seen such passion to help a complete stranger in need as I have here. I thank God everyday. Thank you for your love and compassion if not for you I would not be here today.

I am a previous resident of the Mission In Citrus. I arrived in September of 2010. The prior months to me arriving I was struggling with finding a job. My boyfriend had kick myself and my two teenage daughters out on the street. Stranded with no means of transportation, no food to feed my girls and I was loosing all faith in life. Until a guardian angel had given me the number to the Mission. I was so upset that my oldest daughter had called. With in minutes we were being picked up and taken to the shelter. From the moment I walked in the doors I felt a sense of relief. I could now feed my daughters and lay my head down at night without worrying. For the first time in a long time I felt like I could do what I needed to do with out getting kicked out. I knew I was able to find a job without getting an eviction notice or worrying if my lights were gonna get turned off. After three days of being at the Mission I was able to start working at a really nice job. Which really brought up my self esteem up. I knew I could do more. Until my health issues got worse. I wound up having two more surgeries but yet I had a job and a roof over my head. When I healed from the surgeries I was able to get my own place. Something I haven't been able to give my girls in a long time, due to six previous surgeries. The staff at the Mission are so wonderful. If you had questions or needed help doing anything, they were there to help. I still stop over to help those who have lost their faith and lift their spirits. The Mission helped me in so many ways that no one will ever be able to understand. And I will continue to tell everyone what good they do for those in need.

I am 55 years old, educated and have worked in Neurology for 26 years. I owned my own home, had a supervisory position at a large Medical Center, and put my daughter through college. Due to a growing addiction to prescribed anti-anxiety medication, I lost my job, my house, the respect of my family, and for the first time in my life, became homeless. The Mission in Citrus took me in, gave me a comfortable bed, food to eat, fellowsip with Christian women, help with my medical transportation, and a new family that loved me for just being me. I may not be alive right now without the help of The Mission. Living in the woods in Florida is dangerous....snakes, gators, wildcats, and people who will hurt you for a dime. I am forever grateful to Jim Sleighter, the director here for not giving up on me and giving a second chance on returning to a prosperous and faith based way of life. God bless him!!!

I have struggled with addiction for 5 years. Picking myself up from losing everything wasn't easy, but the missions has helped me by surronding me with women in similar conditions facing similar battles. Jim is understanding of every sitution, nnobody judges you for your past. Many people think of a homeless shelter to be uncomfortable, the missions is not that. Here at the missions is a family enviornment supported by god. I am greatfull to have found the missions and hope rebuild my life and use the missions as a steping stone.

For me this place has help me really get back to a functional member of society. I have learned through my faults what it was i needed to overcome. Jim has been there for us anytime we needed help or an ear to talk to. As have other individuals there. I have been to other places but they are all different. This one however has been me open to us finding work, having visits whenever, and other activities these other shelters only talk about but never let you actually get out and do. I give Jim props because it takes alot to run all these house and deal with so many different people all day. I wish there were more places like this out there for people who are in a bad spot in life. My praise goes out to Jim and all his help and clientel.

my names chelsea huggins ive been at the mission 3 times now and each time has helped me out so much. it may not seem like it cause i keep ending up here but now that i see how the economy has changed so many lives i know its not the worst thing i could go through by being in a shelter jim has helped me abundantly and now i have had the push to motivate myself to go back to school. the first time i was here i was 5 months pregnant with my daughter who is now 18 months old if it wasnt for jim i would probably still be on the streets or even worse..... he helped me by putting food in my belly and a warm place to stay and pushing me to find work. i know now that if i didnt go through what ive went through that i wouldnt see the world as i do today. homeless people arent bad people they just need to straighten there life out and thats what jim is trying to help us all do. some more than others. i am now about to start school to become a LPN and getting my life straight not only for me but for my daughter and to prove to people that because i was homeless does not mean im hopeless... i set my goals and am now succeeding them thatnks to jim. im so glad he pushed me. the mission is the best thing that ever happened to me cause honestly being back here three times has showed me i need to better myself. thank you jim for everything i love you.

I am a homeless veteran who came to the state of Florida to resolve a personal family matter and seek employment. Having lived here in the past, the only thing I dreaded was the extreme heat , hurricanes and the tornadoes they spawn. As for the family matter, I had to walk away.

The mission in Crystal River did not turn me away. Immediately I was reassured that I would be given shelter and a bed to sleep in. The director offered to help me apply for food stamps, but I already had. The routine here at the shelter has structure that does not leave a lot of time for other matters as one might think. I just wish there were enough jobs available so that everyone who wanted to work could find work to support their household.

My name is David Gillespie, and I searved in the Marine Corps. I came to this Veteran Shelter, because I became homeless back in January 9th 2010. Right when I got here they heped me get my DD214, and the counseling that I needed, also they helped me get my medical records transferred from Ocala to Lecanto VA. Everyone here has gone out of there way to help me. I now feel safe, and they helped me constuct a path for me to stay on, and I know that if any problems arise I can turn to them for help. I myself have done everything I can to help out here, and they have told me that I am appreciated, that in itself makes me feel like I am wanted, its like being apart of instead being on the outside looking in.

My name is Chanell McCord, I've been here at the Mission for almost two years, this November and this is my story. I have been from place to place starting from my parents house. It was a loving environment don't get me wrong but it was also controlling, I wanted to do my own thing and make my own niche in the world. I had moved from my parents place to a friend of mine and they threw me out over something stupid. Transportation from work at 3 am. So I found a place that was a room for rent and I was all excited because I had my own room. I had a job at Burger King, I had that job for three and a half years. I got fired for calling out sick when I was sick. I had the stomach flu that was going around in 2009. The manager at the time said to call in two people and get a doctors note, I told her that I had just woke up with a mess in my bed. I had offered to come in the next day she said no come in on Monday and see if you are on the schedule. So I came in the store and she then said come in on Friday. So I did, she then said where is your uniform, I said it is in the car she said get it and I'll give you your last check now get out. That was basically what she said so i no longer had a job. So then I was jobless and getting ready to be put out of the room that i had rented. By that time I had met my fiance Tim, he had rented a room that was across hall from me. He had offered to move out of his room and move into mine and we pay only one rent instead of two. Well the landlord did not like inter-racial couples so he threw us both out. Tim was the one who told me about The Mission and that was where he was staying. While I went back to my parents, I didn't even last a full week when they threw me out again. I'm not on any drugs or drinking any alcohol I'm clean as a whisle. So Tim and I stayed at a hotel till we ran out of money and we both went to the Mission. I was so terrified at the thought of being homeless and upset about my own parents not even wanting to take me back in when I was willing to look for a job and go back to school to obtain my GED. The Mission was so helpful and loving it was like joining a big family of course there will always be problems but they're small. Jim is like the Big Daddy of it all. I was there when he opened the Vet Shelter for the Vets. I help out as much as I can and when i had found out that I was pregnant, Jim was even more helpful in making sure that I had gotten to all my appointments. Helped getting the items that I needed for the baby. Now that I have my baby they are even more helpful. But when I leave I'll never really leave because I will still keep in touch. Even though The Mission is a homeless shelter this will always be home.

My experience with Mission in Citrus Inc. is as a homeless resident. I came to hear about Mission in Citrus from a former resident. This was in December 2010 and i still reside today. I came here with only a few clothes in a small backpack. No job, no money, and definately no hope. Not in myself or even hope of landing a decent job to get my life back. Or what i thought was a life. How can one enjoy life when they continuously walk around in an alcoholic haze? There was a time that i would tell a tale of bad luck. Anything to get the root of the problem off my shoulders. People in AA call this denial or the blame game. Truth is I am an alcoholic of the worst kind, to top that off i have, in the past, never held myself accountable for my drinking. Not even with all the legal trouble. Never seeing the real wrongs that i did to myself and the people who let me in their lives. Then i arrived at Mission in Citrus only to see that a change was sorely in need.
After being here for a while, spending time with Betsy, (the assistant director) And seeing what it is that Jim and his staff are trying to do for people like me as well as so many others, it is very hard to continue on the destructive path i was on. I have, even here. To this day I cannot see what it is that Jim saw in me to keep me here til i got myself staight. Honestly? Jim could have kicked me out a few times, i also could have left as well, which i have. But he didn't and something kept bringing me back. Jim and Betsy will give all the credit to God. they always say that He really runs the Mission. I am definately coming around to the thing i always called "the faith thing". What i have seen in the last few months. I can see the validity of faith and how it does work if you only try it. Only when i came around and turned to faith did i get a job, stop drinking, (only briefly but still working on it) and now looking to do something to help those in my position. Give back something of myself to others, give back ANYTHING for a lifetime of selfishness.
Upon seeing the amazing things that have happend here (even in my short residency) i know all things are possible. With God of coarse, and with people that actually care about the forgotten, the abused, the broken. We all have our pasts they are all different, but they all ultimately led us here. Ony to be healed, fixed, and loved like family. It will take awhile for me to get in a position to do some good. Obviously i can't do anything for other alcoholics for i would not trust myself without at least a year of sobriety. but it is a good goal that might be possible some day. However, in the mean time, i can continue to work, and do the best that i can for my new family. Even if it is just doing what i am told to help out, or simply staying sober.
As a matter of fact this story is my first attempt at helping out with the inner workings of Mission in Citrus. This is a homeless shelter and even when it is that i get out and into my next appartment or home, i want to, and will be here to help any chance i get!! Simply stated this is the best home i have ever known, and the best family.

i have been in this homeless shelter for a few weeks now and so far i love it here. i became homeless after my father got arrested for protecting my family from my older brother. after he got arrested the people whom we were staying with decided to kick us out. after that we made the decision to come here and i personally think it was the best decision we have made in a long time. now my father is still in jail but jim, bless his soul, was kind enough to let my dad come here after he gets out of jail. ever since i moved in here with my mom and my little brother the people here have treated us with so much respect and they didn't down grade us at all. i think mainly because they know the situation my family and i are in... i just want to honestly say that i am grateful for the mission in citurs homeless shetler.

Since my arrival here at the mission I have accomplished a lot. This is the only place that has given me the opportunity to feel human. They didnt turn their backs on me as my family has done. My children and I have been through a great deal. And the mission has helped me overcome these devestating events which have happened. I was able to find a job within the first week of being here. I have been able to get through two surgeries without losing my place in life. The mission has given hope, love and a family that I never had. The director is one of the most amazing men I have ever met in my life time. The only one who has ever showed concern for the problems that I had/have to over come. If I could be in any homeless shelter this is the one to be in. Although, we think a homeless shelter is a place to be scared that is not true. I am safe with my daughters, in the safest place I could be right now in life. If it wasnt for the Mission In Citrus I would be in the woods with my girls. We also have a good christian enviroment, a place with God.

But, Jim took me in with open arms and has helped me with my recovery. alot of peopole take for granted the people and places that come into their lives but, i for one will not make that mistake again. My name is Jessica. I came to the Mission in Citrus In March of 2010. My husband and I had been living in our van for three months, we hadn't eaten in days. We were both at the end of our ropes and very suicidel. Jim, the director of the Mission took us in and he and the rest of the people of the mission have helped us turn our lives around. I am now a staff member, and have been able to defeat my problems with self mutilation and extream sucidel tendcies. My husband has been able to kick his long fight with addiction of drugs. Not only has this place changed our lives, but has shown us what we want to do with the rest of ours, help the homeless. We our expecting a baby boy within the next month and just moved in to our own home that we are buying. The mission has helped us with obtaining everything we need for our new home and our new baby. I love this place, I love the people, and I love the way we are changing the way people view the homeless.

the mission is a great place to re-unite families. I am residing here now for the folowing reasons i had gotten into a dispute with my father and it didnt go so well. Life at my house which is located in springhill wasnt going so well. i lived there with my father and step mother. my father and i used to be so close but now ever since he aquired a new wife he's changed dramatically. i used to be able to talk to him about everything , but now i cant even ask him how his day is without something going wrong in the middle of our conversation , bottom line my relationship with my father has been askew. once i moved to a "homeless shelter" called the Mission in Citrus my life began to fufill. the people around here have shown me love like i was their own child and the love only gets stronger. day by day they help me if i am in need of something. we get along more than my father and step mom every could. we do not fight we do not argue i find it here what some intellectuals call peacfull. life here is more comforting than at my own home. then there is jim the director what a great sociable person. he helped my mother get through her hard times and took her in to help her get back on her feet. now she has a job and is working on getting her own place. jim is currently helping me get re-united with my mother. i lost contact with her for some time. i was very upset at the fact that i couldnt talk to my own mother. my mother has five kids. one is distant in new york. i am the third oldest making me 16 years of age. my two little sisters who i love dearly come on some weekends and they get to see us and i have a good time with them. they love jim. everyone who comes here has no reason to dislike him. he is a straight foward man and will go out of his way to help anyone who wants to help themselves. he has a big heart and nothing can change that. we like to think of everyone as family. we grew close to each other over the two months that i have been here. i love everyone here and they love me just as much if not more . the mission in cirtus is the best thing that could happen to me during a hard time. theirs delva... what a great lady i like to think of her as my sister she is always thinking of me and helping me through some hard times that i dont like to discuss with most. we hangout and go to the springs occasionally. their is also two men that live here their names are lee and wally. they are father figures to me and they are just out there looking out for me , trying to keep me on the right track. they will go out of their way to make me comfortable and feel at home.jay jay... this kid has been a brother to me since i have been here. he has just graduated yesterday and im so proud of him. we like to go to the springs and hangout to catch a tan. all i have to say about this is thank you everyone for all your help and support.

I felt like i had no where to go or noone that loved me.I see that is not true, there is a bunch of people that do love me and want to see me do good.I wouldnt change where i am for anything. this is my family & they mean the world to me.I was addicted to roxicodone and xanax the mission has helped me to quit cold turkey. my drug problem happened when i lost my dad 3yrs ago and it still is hard for me to deal with that situation. If it wasnt for the mission and jim i would be dead right now. i had lost all hope and i am so happy they changed that thought and helped me get closer with god.I LOVE THE MISSION VERY VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!

I came here after being incarcerated. I thought I had seen peoples eyes change while in there, before my eyes, but when I came here to The Mission after finding out where my husband was, coming here not only reconciled my marriage, but I have seen God's Miricles and lives changed even more than I ever expected.
It warms my heart and sole to watch the transformation of souls that have been broken by addiction, abandonment and daily life struggles. To watch this and witness it happening, is irreplaceable.
I myself am a recovering addict and I give to them what has been given to me...RECOVERY.
Most of all what I see at the Mission is God.

I My essay on what I think is awesome about The Mission in Citrus Inc.

I would like to start out by saying that this place is AWESOME!! and I am truly blessed to be here. I believe God puts people in certain places for a reason and I believe He led me here.

I may have a different perspective on things here because I see much more than some of the other residents. Not all of them, just some.

I quote Jim: "If I don't help them, no one else will." I have witnessed this account on numerous occasions. I have quickly learned how true this statement is. Jim feels the pain of every resident who comes through that gate. So much so, that it makes him ill. You couldn't get the love, compassion, and understanding from any other Director or their staff at any other place, but here.

I've also witnessed the miracles that have happened in this Mission because of that statement. I've witnessed people survive and overcome suicide. I've witnessed hardened hearts learn to love again. I have seen mothers get reunited with their children and some who regained custody of their children.

I have seen people come through those gates with addiction to alcohol and drugs and never thought to change. However with the grace of God they have wanted to change and get help. These people are not FORCED but strongly encouraged to do so. They are made aware that people DO care, something that they somehow lost along the way.

I've witnessed people overcome homelessness, get a job, their own place, get reunited with their families, and become productive people in society all by the hand up they were willing to take and get back out there and be happy again. We still see their struggles, however they all know that they can come back here, and MOST do, sometimes to get food, clothing, gas money, diapers, or an encouraging word from the Director Jim, and the other residents. Some will come back to help, or to just say thank-you and they are doing well. That's AMAZING!!!

I also think The Mission in Citrus Inc. is so great because these Shelters are run by THE HOMELESS. FOR FREE. BECAUSE WE WANT TO. Not because we are paid to. This is something that I never thought, dreamed, or imagined I would do. Seeing what is accomplished at the end of the day is very satisfying. The work is endless though, but by God's Will, what gets done seems to be just enough to get by. We barely make the bills every month and some months it seems that we can't...very scary thought...this is the last place for us and it might end next month...but by God's will, AMAZINGLY, somehow we squeak by. God truly runs this Mission.

What keeps our Director going, (and the rest of us) is the children. I have actually heard the little ones say: "I don't want to leave". These children said they like it here, AT A HOMELESS SHELTER, better than at their homes with their other parent, grandparent, or other caretaker. We keep going because we see the families that reunite because of this wonderful place. The people we can help and do help brings us so much joy. We continue on for the people that get saved here. Saved from addiction, suicide, themselves. Saved by Jesus and The Mission in Citrus Inc.

I am an RN and a veteran of the USMC and have worked in Kingston, Jamaica with abandoned and severely handicaped children. In addition, I volunteered in Long Beach Mississippi and New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. I know first hand how individual lives can be changed when they know someone cares. When a person has lost everything it would be so easy for that person to just give up or turn to a life of crime. The everyday things we take for granted mean everything to them not only to survive but to give them hope and a sense of well being and feeling of usefullness. The Mission in Citrus does this and so much more; they offer safety, food, shelter, friendship, faith, assist with employment and educational opportunities and so much more. The world needs more people like James Sleighter whom truly care about others. May God Bless and help this wonderful organization to prosper and help all who need their services.

Existence for the Mission in Citrus is solely based on helping those in need. Seeing all genders, ages and life situations arriving for assistance is a life-altering picture. Being able to house and feed in order to take care of the homeless situation is monumental. However, the paramount drive for the Mission in Citrus is to rebuild the lives of those who have not achieved success on their own. That’s what it is all about. Yes, getting into a place of warmth in the cold winter weather, filling up the stomach that is hurting, providing clothing and hygiene facilities are definite life needs. But to look further at each individual person’s life and the direction that is needed stands tallest above everything else at the Mission in Citrus.

When a person and/or family arrives for help, all facets of their life are taken into consideration. If there are legal issues, further action is taken. This is the same case for addiction needs. Each and every person is dealt with in reference to the situation that is deemed primary in their lives. Education is afforded to all that need to possibly get a GED or into a vocational training program. When a minor is involved, they are immediately enrolled in the public school system. The positive support that is demonstrated by the Mission in Citrus director speaks for itself when residents share their stories of survival and success because of the power of the direction they have received at the mission.

Seeing the life-changing situations that have occurred at the Mission in Citrus is sometimes hard to perceive. It is so heart wrenching that I can often not envision what life has truly been like for so many unfortunate people. But the changed lives is what counts and the Mission in Citrus is responsible for the changing of many many lives in Citrus County.

As a non-profit worker with experience in homelessness for the past four years, I am often on the lookout for ministries and shelters that are DOING, rather than saying. The Mission, with their open door policy and come as you are attitude, are one of those rare finds.
