I am well pleased with this veteran shelter because I would be living in the woods right now if places like this weren't around. Since my stay here in this "family like" environment, I haven't been so depressed. I am also grateful and in better health thanks to the shelters services such as the meals, showers, television, and my bed.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

All in all this shelter has helped me to get out of a hole and on my feet. I'm now able to find work and stay out of the street because of this shelter.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would get more food donations, and provide easier access to transportation.

More feedback...

How did you find this group?

A sheriff recommended the mission shelter, then from there Jim recommeded this V.A. shelter. So I came here and am still getting better every day, and soon I'll be able to be independent once again.

What, if any, change in your life has this group encouraged?

No change, just encouraged to accomplish goals daily in order to better myself and support my daughter.

My name is Chanell McCord, I've been here at the Mission for almost two years, this November and this is my story. I have been from place to place starting from my parents house. It was a loving environment don't get me wrong but it was also controlling, I wanted to do my own thing and make my own niche in the world. I had moved from my parents place to a friend of mine and they threw me out over something stupid. Transportation from work at 3 am. So I found a place that was a room for rent and I was all excited because I had my own room. I had a job at Burger King, I had that job for three and a half years. I got fired for calling out sick when I was sick. I had the stomach flu that was going around in 2009. The manager at the time said to call in two people and get a doctors note, I told her that I had just woke up with a mess in my bed. I had offered to come in the next day she said no come in on Monday and see if you are on the schedule. So I came in the store and she then said come in on Friday. So I did, she then said where is your uniform, I said it is in the car she said get it and I'll give you your last check now get out. That was basically what she said so i no longer had a job. So then I was jobless and getting ready to be put out of the room that i had rented. By that time I had met my fiance Tim, he had rented a room that was across hall from me. He had offered to move out of his room and move into mine and we pay only one rent instead of two. Well the landlord did not like inter-racial couples so he threw us both out. Tim was the one who told me about The Mission and that was where he was staying. While I went back to my parents, I didn't even last a full week when they threw me out again. I'm not on any drugs or drinking any alcohol I'm clean as a whisle. So Tim and I stayed at a hotel till we ran out of money and we both went to the Mission. I was so terrified at the thought of being homeless and upset about my own parents not even wanting to take me back in when I was willing to look for a job and go back to school to obtain my GED. The Mission was so helpful and loving it was like joining a big family of course there will always be problems but they're small. Jim is like the Big Daddy of it all. I was there when he opened the Vet Shelter for the Vets. I help out as much as I can and when i had found out that I was pregnant, Jim was even more helpful in making sure that I had gotten to all my appointments. Helped getting the items that I needed for the baby. Now that I have my baby they are even more helpful. But when I leave I'll never really leave because I will still keep in touch. Even though The Mission is a homeless shelter this will always be home.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

keeping my spirits up and learn to ask for help when I needed it. The people at the Mission are willing to help but you have to help yourself in order to get help.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

do nothing it changes on its own but i would help either way

My experience with Mission in Citrus Inc. is as a homeless resident. I came to hear about Mission in Citrus from a former resident. This was in December 2010 and i still reside today. I came here with only a few clothes in a small backpack. No job, no money, and definately no hope. Not in myself or even hope of landing a decent job to get my life back. Or what i thought was a life. How can one enjoy life when they continuously walk around in an alcoholic haze? There was a time that i would tell a tale of bad luck. Anything to get the root of the problem off my shoulders. People in AA call this denial or the blame game. Truth is I am an alcoholic of the worst kind, to top that off i have, in the past, never held myself accountable for my drinking. Not even with all the legal trouble. Never seeing the real wrongs that i did to myself and the people who let me in their lives. Then i arrived at Mission in Citrus only to see that a change was sorely in need.
After being here for a while, spending time with Betsy, (the assistant director) And seeing what it is that Jim and his staff are trying to do for people like me as well as so many others, it is very hard to continue on the destructive path i was on. I have, even here. To this day I cannot see what it is that Jim saw in me to keep me here til i got myself staight. Honestly? Jim could have kicked me out a few times, i also could have left as well, which i have. But he didn't and something kept bringing me back. Jim and Betsy will give all the credit to God. they always say that He really runs the Mission. I am definately coming around to the thing i always called "the faith thing". What i have seen in the last few months. I can see the validity of faith and how it does work if you only try it. Only when i came around and turned to faith did i get a job, stop drinking, (only briefly but still working on it) and now looking to do something to help those in my position. Give back something of myself to others, give back ANYTHING for a lifetime of selfishness.
Upon seeing the amazing things that have happend here (even in my short residency) i know all things are possible. With God of coarse, and with people that actually care about the forgotten, the abused, the broken. We all have our pasts they are all different, but they all ultimately led us here. Ony to be healed, fixed, and loved like family. It will take awhile for me to get in a position to do some good. Obviously i can't do anything for other alcoholics for i would not trust myself without at least a year of sobriety. but it is a good goal that might be possible some day. However, in the mean time, i can continue to work, and do the best that i can for my new family. Even if it is just doing what i am told to help out, or simply staying sober.
As a matter of fact this story is my first attempt at helping out with the inner workings of Mission in Citrus. This is a homeless shelter and even when it is that i get out and into my next appartment or home, i want to, and will be here to help any chance i get!! Simply stated this is the best home i have ever known, and the best family.

This group has used our donations in an extremely frugal way to help as many clients as possible on so little. I'm convinced that my donation is serving the most people because of its low overhead.

i have been in this homeless shelter for a few weeks now and so far i love it here. i became homeless after my father got arrested for protecting my family from my older brother. after he got arrested the people whom we were staying with decided to kick us out. after that we made the decision to come here and i personally think it was the best decision we have made in a long time. now my father is still in jail but jim, bless his soul, was kind enough to let my dad come here after he gets out of jail. ever since i moved in here with my mom and my little brother the people here have treated us with so much respect and they didn't down grade us at all. i think mainly because they know the situation my family and i are in... i just want to honestly say that i am grateful for the mission in citurs homeless shetler.

Since my arrival here at the mission I have accomplished a lot. This is the only place that has given me the opportunity to feel human. They didnt turn their backs on me as my family has done. My children and I have been through a great deal. And the mission has helped me overcome these devestating events which have happened. I was able to find a job within the first week of being here. I have been able to get through two surgeries without losing my place in life. The mission has given hope, love and a family that I never had. The director is one of the most amazing men I have ever met in my life time. The only one who has ever showed concern for the problems that I had/have to over come. If I could be in any homeless shelter this is the one to be in. Although, we think a homeless shelter is a place to be scared that is not true. I am safe with my daughters, in the safest place I could be right now in life. If it wasnt for the Mission In Citrus I would be in the woods with my girls. We also have a good christian enviroment, a place with God.

I personally am grateful for the mission, I came here with alot of personal issues in my life. and because of the love and support i found here i have been able to overcome and live my life somewhat normally. I am a recovering addict and up until coming to the mission i was uncertain how to deal with everyday life. But, Jim took me in with open arms and has helped me with my recovery. alot of peopole take for granted the people and places that come into their lives but, i for one will not make that mistake again. The mission has given me a new lease on life. I know i can do anything that i set my mind too and there are people here who are willing to help me to make the right choices and point me in the right direction. I would like to thak everyone here at the mission, our wonderful director Jim, and all of the other people who donate their time to make our lives better.
