I found Heritage retreats to be an incredible experience, both for those with and without knowledge of Judaism. The caring and dedication of the staff was really unbelievable. I left the week inspired, uplifted, and with my commitment to Judaism renewed.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping unaffilated Jews learn more about their heritage.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The inspiring classes.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

wonderful!!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do unbelievable things. It could reach out and change so many people's lives and show them the beauty of Judaism.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I was a participant in the January 2007 Heritage Retreat held in Santa Barbara, California. I feel extremely privileged to have been a part of it because it impacted me in truly lasting way. Providing young women like myself with highly intelligent, inspiring and sincere teachers, Heritage Retreats gave me a venue to probe my personal connection to my Jewish heritage and discover its true meaning. The program offered me an accepting place to ask my questions and get real answers; a place to meet bright, young women like myself and experience much of what I had only heard about. We had illuminating classes discussing differ topics such as prayer, philosophy and modern issues, where the staff would take the extra time to get to the bottom of a complex or hot-button topic such as style of dress. We spent time hiking, horseback riding and enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings of the ranch where the program was held; and we experienced a touching and memorable Shabbos together with the staff and families who came in for the weekend to be with us. Overall, Heritage Retreats reconnected me in a significant way to my Jewish heritage. After participating in the program, I felt that I wanted to learn more and a few months later, I decided that I would try further Jewish learning at Neve Yerushalayim, a seminary in Jerusalem.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

sincere, kind, open, always, ALWAYS available for questions and completely wonderful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

impact the Jewish world in a hugely positive way: by creating Jews who LOVE their Judaism and want it to be meaningful for themselves and the next generations.

Ways to make it better...

the week-long experience was longer, or at least had the option for women to spend more time at the program if they chose to.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

funding. They have many, many young women (and men) that they could reach if only they could have more programs.

Growing up as a secular Jew, I was acutely conscious about the barrier that separated me from religious Jews. I recall purchasing two loaves of challah at a deli in Borough Park, and being glared at by the customers and cashier because I wasn't wearing traditional clothing. The barrier was seemingly insurmountable. The amazing rabbis and yeshiva students at Heritage Retreats made me feel welcome, and in so doing bridged a gap between two worlds. These were learned men who had studied Torah their entire lives, but they had the patience to teach me something as simple as the aleph-bet. Words cannot describe how honored I was to receive their guidance. The ideas I first encountered at Heritage Retreats have gone on to enrich every aspect of my life. Two of my siblings went on the program as well, and it brings me great joy to see my family's faces in the light of the Havdalah candle at the end of every Shabbos.

The time I spent on Heritage Retreats was truly an eye opening experience. By bringing together a diverse group of Jewish students for a week of growth and connection, Heritage Retreats enabled me to explore in an honest way what I have to give and what I can learn. I came away feeling energized and committed to continued growth--it was truly a once in a life time experience!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the connections I made that have lasted beyond the week of the program. Many of us are still in touch though our locations span the globe, it is truly inspiring to feel connected and cared about by the people who shared this special week with me.

Heritage Retreats provided me with a phenomenal learning experience that allowed me to grow as an individual while giving of myself to others. The program afforded many college age students to explore their heritage in a non judgmental, relaxing, and stress free environment. The location, directors, teachers, and participants all add to the amazing experience that we all shared.
