MENTOR ME PETALUMA

As a volunteer for Mentor Me, I have to say that meeting with my mentee each week brings joy to both me and my mentee. I love seeing my mentee as he brings with him a big smile and hug each time we meet. I am a caring adult and friend to him just as has flourished into a beautifully caring and loving young boy. Thanks to Val Richman, Executive Director for building this wonderful organization for children who need that something extra in their lives -- a caring and loving friend that they can depend on.

I have mentored with this organization for the pass 6 years.I know what good it has done for both me and my mentees. One of my kids graduates High school this year and is going to the junior college(something that was far from his thoughts just 2 years ago). Both have avoided the gang problems that exist in are town, tho it has been so close to their lives. It has made me feel so good to have helped them both and to know that they want and need me to be in their lives.

This mentoring program began at the elementary school where my kids went to school, and one of the teachers asked me to come back one hour a week to mentor a 2nd grade boy. They have a mentor center set up with games, toys, books, sports equipment, art supplies, a cooking area and a place to just hang out and talk. We do puzzles, play with building blocks and cook. We sometimes talk but not always. We also play chess and cards. The mentor center coordinator is there is help when I need her. My mentee's teacher is always available to talk, too.
The Great!
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
My mentee's increased confidence over the years as well as attending school more regularly. Even though he tends to be absent a lot he has never been absent on mentoring day.
Ways to make it better...
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Try to get more mentors to volunteer. There are so many kids on the waiting list.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
Being friends with a young person.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
Great! Dedicated and helpful.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
Open mentor centers in all schools in town, plus a downtown community mentor center. Every young person could have a mentor!
Ways to make it better...
We didn't have to share the mentor center with other activities on campus, like music and science classes.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
Finding enough volunteer mentors and having enough funding.
One thing I'd also say is that...
One-to-one relationships are very powerful. They are simple yet profound.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
meeting with my mentee as well as meeting a lot of other interesting adults in our community.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
top-notch caring and dedicated people from all walks of life with a common interest in making a better place for kids in our town.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
train and support enough volunteer mentors for all the kids that could benefit from a caring adult in their lives. It could also build and maintain safe spaces in which mentors and mentees could meet regularly.
Ways to make it better...
I had more regular interaction with the supervisor in charge at my student's school.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
a misunderstanding about why we need the amount of funding that it takes to run an "all-volunteer" mentoring program.
One thing I'd also say is that...
our volunteers are amazing people!
