For over 17 years, I have been a caregiver for my mother & aunt. From time to time, my mother's critical health concerns required lengthy hospital stays & discharge to convalescent facilities/nursing homes. During her stays at these facilities, her realization of her loss of independence, lack of mobility & being bed-bound was heightened and absolutely demoralized her. Hope & motivation was disappearing for her and the plight of spending her days in a nursing home was overwhelming her, her sister and myself. With my family's consent, I applied for home-delivered meals. Meals on Wheels West was a great solution in allowing my mother to remain in the comfort of her own bed and home. The home-delivery of meals and a visit from the volunteers complemented my efforts as a caregiver. With her passing a few years ago, I now live with and care for my homebound aunt of 84 years of age. Her illness has mandated much of her time bed bound as well. Presently, I am able to manage my work, personal time and the care I must provide to make my aunt's life enjoyable. From time to time, I have been able to volunteer for Meals on Wheels West and my experience of delivering meals to the seniors and disabled, of all ages, has been a rewarding experience. As I leave their homes with a smile, I am amazed that I always feel that I just received something from them. My world becomes a little brighter when they greet me with joy and appreciation for their daily meal & my visit which maybe the only personal contact that they may have all day. I sometimes believe my time volunteering with the meal delivery is actually therapeutic for me. As a caregiver, I have explored many options for support and ways to understand my caregiving role in life. I truly understand the emotional needs of the aging and disabled persons. The need for self-esteem and a sense of independence is so important to every person. I get it as I have been a part of that life experience for so long. Meals on Wheels West is the absolute 'safety net' for the homebound person to remain healthy, vibrant and allow some independence to remain in their own homes surrounded by memories and security. The alternative are the institutions and facilities that I have come to abhor.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The home-delivered meals of Meals on Wheels West lessened my caregiving obligations. During the day while at work, I knew that my mother & aunt were eating and getting a visit by a friendly person. My experience of delivering meals was a revelation that EVERYONE HAS A STORY, no matter the age or whatever.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

My experience receiving the meals and delivering the meals from Meals on Wheels West leaves a great impression on me and I find no reason for change.

Meals on Wheels West is a wonderful organization that is greatly needed in the community. I volunteered for them by working in their office in addition to delivering meals to the clients. I have experienced firsthand how much the clients appreciate the service and the thoughtfulness behind it. The human contact is something that these people look forward to everyday and I enjoyed getting to know the people on my meal route. Along with the CEO/Director RoseMary Regalbuto, I was able to implement a plan to deliver emergency meal kits as well as a one-on-one emergency action plan, both for use in the event of an emergency. While delivering these kits, I could tell that emergency preparedness was not something the clients normally thought about. Multiple people cried out of gratitude as they felt like someone cared about their well-being.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The smiles that the elderly/disabled give when they greet me at the door.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have larger signs for the cars of Meals on Wheels volunteers as they drive around town delivering meals so people can better see what they are trying to do/make it easier for them to temporarily park.

I first experienced Meals on Wheels West when I volunteered at their annual Havana Night fundraiser. Everyone was very friendly, and the event was great! Since, I have continued to work with Meals on Wheels West and still love the organization. The people who work there are fun-loving and caring. Everyone really cares about the clients served and it shows by the excellent work everyone does and their willingness to go overboard for the cause.

Meals on Wheels West is a wonderfully run and vitally important organization in its community. Service is provided with a smile and both the recipients and volunteers' hearts are warmed with a powerful and positive experience.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to deliver this much needed service and continue to reach out to the local community to make them astutely aware how important their donations and participation are to allow us to pursue our mission.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

hearing the stories and rich experiences of the people that Meals on Wheels touches everyday. Genuine friendships have developed and a connection with kind, gentle people have been fostered.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

life affirming.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help so many more under-serviced communities.

Ways to make it better...

we could impact every homebound person in our community in need with compassion and efficiency.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

continuing to grow and modernize our outreach.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Meals on Wheels is fantastic!

It has been my honor to be a part of this wonderful organization. I have been a fundraiser and board member for several years now and the assistance we offer to our clients is so appreciated and necessary. When you see the happy smiles on our clients as we deliver their meals and add companionship to what can be a lonely day, nothing is more satisfying. The organization is run with wonderful, caring staff who always put the client's needs first. I am very proud to be affiliated with Meals On Wheels and will continue to do so into the future.
