Meals on Wheels of Staten Island was created in 1972 with the mission to provide healthy nutrition to older adults over age 60 residing on Staten Island. Two meals are delivered daily both meeting the nutritionist approved 1/3 recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Meal recipients are individuals who are unable to shop for themselves or to prepare their own meals. Meals are delivered by our staff in hot-shot trucks as well as by volunteers who cover 45 daily routes to all Staten Island communities. Staff nurses affirm that the person is eligible to receive meals and address special dietary requirements based on diagnosis, medication interactions, allergies, etc. Kosher and halal meals are prepared by a subcontrract caterer which we deliver across the island. Emergency food boxes are given to all our our meal recipients and replenished as needed.
Even as the economy is still recovering and many people and businesses are dealing with financial strain, our spring luncheon and fall dinner dance were successful events as we maintained our fundraising levels from those events. We have initiated the process to build a new facility to house a larger kitchen, office and vehicle space needs as our census has grown very significantly and is projected to continue to grow dramatically. We will maintain our comittment to serve all in need of our services.
Older adults, over the age of 60 who are unable to shop for themselves or to cook their meals.
Direct beneficiaries per year:
Our current census is appraching 1000, we have served over 1250 meal recipients over the year.
Geographic areas served:
All community districts of Staten Island.
Home delivered meals is our primary service. Daily contact with the deliverer, either staff person or volunteer is viewed as equally important as the meals that they bring. Our registered nurses monitor meal recipients to ensure that we are responsive to their individual nutrition needs. We partner with fifteen agencies serving the developmentally disabled who assist with delivery, mailings or in our kitchen, in a truly win-win partnership. We are initiating a pet food program for recipients who have pets but have similar challenges in feeding their cherished pet companions. Given the average age of our clients and level of frailty we have also been in position for emergency interventions, when upon delivery we find a person in distress or unable to receive their meal.

I've been volunteering for a few years and have found it to be truly rewarding. The staff at the office is pleasant and very helpful. I have a route every Friday delivering to 12 recipients who are delighted to know that someone cares. I deliver two meals (one hot and one cold) and have not heard any complaints about the quality of the food we deliver. The meals are individualized and comply with their nutritional needs. I have found that this experience has enriched my life.
