I have been following the stories of individuals and families posted on the Mayan Families website. My daughter went to Guatemala to teach English so the children would have a better chance of employment and self-sufficiency. A worthy effort, but the people in the region served by Mayan Families are struggling just to SURVIVE. Children can't stay in school because the $.50 a day they might make is needed by their family. They have one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. I recently donated to help a young mother with 4 children, abandoned by her husband (an all too common occurrence) have a house built. This can be done for $750 !!! This was a very small home on a tiny rented lot -- but it is a palace to this family. Mayan Families has proven themselves to be one of those organizations completely devoid of 'fluff'. You can be confident that your donations are making a huge difference in these families' lives.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My daughter is currently helping Mayan Families. She has no time or tolerance for organizations that don't have their 'stuff' together. She should have left this region and moved on over a month ago, but the needs are so pressing that she's staying.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

For all of Guatemala, I'd like to find a way to safely (without it costing $100's) get donations and supplies into the country. There's so much here (U.S./Europe) that could and would be donated if only we could get it there.

I have spent the past two months as a volunteer for Mayan Families, and I've seen firsthand the importance of their role in Panajachel and the surrounding towns. Since I've been here, I've seen more than one life saved, and many made much better, by the work that this organization does. You can be sure that any support sent here will be quickly put to great use by a very dedicated staff.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

We've been able to get one young single mother and her children out of an abusive housing situation by building them a house, and get essential emergency medical care to countless people who otherwise would have had to go without it. I've also had the pleasure of meeting dozens of the some 1500 students that are sponsored through Mayan Families. These students would otherwise not have the chance to study, and they are thrilled to be able to stay in school.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Get them more long term volunteers, or a few more staff members. Most of the staff are doing at least a job and a half.

Working with Mayan Families was a rewarding and life changing experience. They were very helpful in attempting to direct our efforts and expertise to help the most individuals that were in the most need. They made us feel extremely welcome, and appreciated.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I had face to face contact with the people of Panajacho, Guatemala by going to their homes and working side by side with them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I feel the organization is fantastic, but they need to limit the scope of what they try to accomplish instead of trying to do a multitude of different things in different directions.

These people are really amazing. Seem to be very active, with a lot of direct involvement both in and from the communities around Lake Aititlan that they serve. I had a terrific experience working with them and would highly recommend them to anyone interested

I had the opportunity to work with Mayan Families for a few days in October as we distributed aid to families affected by landslides and flooding. They are helping in such a huge range of different ways it is staggering - this is one of the most proactive charities I have ever come across. Witnessing what they do first hand I can only admire their commitment, optimism and pragmatism in the face of a challenging situation. They were so helpful in helping us acheive our goals during our short time in Guatemala.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Several small villages in the lake Atitlan region of Guatemala

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Change the logo. But they already know that ha ha ha.

I have always enjoyed my time with this great group of individuals. They are truly committed to helping better the lives of those most in need. I have worked with them once a year since they started, and have seen them grow exponentially in size. Their employees mainly consist of local Guatemalans who use their intimacy with the community to discover those most in need of aid.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

watching the numbers of children sponsored grow, and the care and consideration for each child is amazing.

Volunteering for Mayan Families was such a great experience for me. I learned lots, and had the priviledge of giving back to others. They are a great organization to volunteer with!!

While in Guatemala we travelled to some of the homes and schools that Mayan Families had built. We were able to see the direct impact that this organization has on these people.

We have worked with Mayan Families for 6 years and have watched them grow. The need is so great in this part of the word and they react to that need, instantly. They have their finger on the heartbeat of what is needed and they provide whatever they can, however they can, as fast as possible. They also provide steady work for 40 indigenous people. This is great. Mayan Families doesn't stand on pomp and ceremony. They are not about how it looks to others. They are the real thing with their heart in the right place at all times. I will continue to have my organization (Mayan Families Canada) work exclusively with them for years to come

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

We work directly with Mayan Families in Guatemala and then bring back our experiences and their needs to schools and communities across Canada. I have seen how a child in Canada responds when they hear how they have helped a child there. Magic!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Find sponsors to provide consistent, long term funding. This organization runs on a shoe-string and does the work of any large-scale organization in other parts of the world. But it needs more funding.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Meeting the indigenous people, both workers at Mayan Families and the people we help, and developing relationships with them that have lasted over the years.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Truly there to help others. Not involved with themselves.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Make an even bigger difference than it does already. The people of the Lake Atitlan area would be healthier, better educated and be able to provide for themselves - a goal of any NGO.

Ways to make it better...

More funding was available.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Finding funding

One thing I'd also say is that...

I will continue working with this organization because of the trust I have in what they do and their open hearts to help those truly in need.

Volunteering with Mayan Families was an incredible experience! I learned so much about Guatemala and had the opportunity to help many people through the many great programs run by Mayan Families. The staff and volunteers at Mayan Families have such big hearts for the people of Guatemala and are doing great things in the country. It is really amazing how many students are able to go to school through the sponsorship program. Many kids are very loved by their sponsors.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

installing water filters in a small village. It was a wonderful experience helping families get clean drinking water with the water filters we delivered. It was change I could see!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to find a more efficient way of dealing with clothes donations.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the wonderful caring staff and being able to help the local people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

amazing! So caring and they all have such big hearts. I will miss working with them a lot!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

really make a huge difference in the Lake Atitlan region! So many children could be able to go to school and have the necessary food and clothes.

Ways to make it better...

I knew what I wanted to help out with before I got there

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the want to do so much and sometimes it's hard to find the volunteers and the resources to do them all.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I loved working with Mayan Families and I'd love go back!

What I found so impressive about this organization is their commitment to help as many people as possible in concrete and sustainable ways. The staff both paid and volunteer were committed to helping the people as much as they could, but also worked to help impower the people to be able to build a better life for themselves. In other words, we weren't just handing out, we were helping people to structure their lives and make choices that they could eventually sustain on their own.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My experience working with Mayan Families has made me want to continue to help them support the people they work with through work in my own country.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I wouldn't change anything about the organization, I just want to encourage more people to support their work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Meeting the people being supported by Mayan Families in their homes and communities and experiencing their culture.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Everyone was supportive, helpful and fun in spite of language barriers and some of the sadness that we encountered.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

This organization could build more sustainable programs that could reach even more people. It could also build more schools, homes and provide more services that directly help the people.

Ways to make it better...

I hadn't gotten so many mosquito bites!!!!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Finding consistent funding through committed donors.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Coming to Guatemala was the experience of a lifetime I won't ever forget!
