Location: 6 Poquonock Ave. Windsor CT 06095 USA

Mission: Our mission is to provide an atmosphere of trust in which children and families who are grieving a death share their experiences, receive support and find comfort. We are able to do this through peer support groups, education and training.
Programs: Mary's Place offers peer grief support groups for children ages 3-18.  Our Little Kids Group is for children ages 3-7, Big Kids Group ages 8-12 and Teens Group ages 13-18.  The peer support groups are offered to children who are grieving the death of a parent, sibling or in the case of teens, a close friend. We also have a Young Widows and Widowers Group.  All groups are offered at no charge to families. Besides our in house support groups we have a resource center and library, offer support and guidance to schools and the community and offer a 6 week course for our parents on Understanding Children's Grief.

My husband passed away a year ago, leaving myself and my 6 year old daughter. A year earlier, my Mother, her only grandparent had passed away. She felt alone in her feelings and different from other children she went to school with. She said "no one understands me, they don't understand why I cry so much". I talked to her about counseling and telling someone about her feelings but she was very reluctant " just talking to another adult". A co-worker suggested I check out Mary's Place. Since our very first meeting at Mary's Place, my daughter just lit up. She just adores the place, it is such a warm & inviting environment. The Staff, well, I can't say enough about the staff, they are so understanding, it's amazing. Of course, the other children who share the same or similar losses as her, they just make her feel like a normal kid again. Like they said the first day we went, it's sad we have to go, but they're glad we came. I couldn't be happier to have found Mary's Place at this time in our lives!

My daughter and I are learning how to go on with our daily routines and at the same time, not forget "Daddy". We are planning vacations to some of his favorite places AND she's so excited because "Daddy" was there. I know without Mary's Place, we'd be shying away from doing this and not living our lives, like Daddy would have wanted us to. AND it just feels good!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I wouldn't change a thing.

In January I decided that It was a good time for me to start volunteering somewhere...but where? I knew that I wanted to work with children...but how? Then it occured to me...Mary's Place!! In the past I had donated my services and attended the Spring Galla but, I knew very little about what Mary's Place was all about. After some intense training and only a few sessions with the "big kids" group I am proud to say that I am now a volunteer facilitator at Mary's Place and am starting to understand how important this kind of support is to the grieving children and their families. It is a "safe" place for kids to express their ideas and feelings about death and grief. It is also a place to share memories and to understand that they are not alone. So Far this experience, for me, has been excactly what I was looking glad I opened that door!!

I am new with this organization and have not yet experienced results with the kids(it's just too soon for that). But, I have experienced some of my own personal growth(through training) and look forward to spending more time with the kids!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would expand! This is a great and needed place of hope and healing. I have personally experienced the loss of a parent at an early age and truely believe in the philosophy at Mary's Place.

My experience has been so enriching to see how families coming to Mary's Place are handled with sensitivity and compassion. The board regularly hears from parents who share their personal story and subsequent experiences about how Mary's Place helped their children and themselves adjust to the death of a spouse, parent, sibling or grandparent through adult groups as well as children's groups from tots to teens. My observation is not one of overwhelming sadness but love, courage, laughter, sharing and individual growth as the children learn that they are not alone and can honestly express themselves while being understood by those in similar circumstances.

I have personally witnessed the progress and growth of one family after their husband and father died from cancer. The three girls were eight, six and four years old. Their happily remarried mother is extremely proud as her oldest is now in her second year of college focused on a career, the second is entering college this fall and the youngest is entering her second hear of high school. All three are bright, engaging and compassionate young women.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would double the current Director's salary and vociferously encourage all forms of funding solicitations to support and enable Mary's Place to grow so it can reach beyond the state and eventually to have additional facilities throughout New England.
