The maryland state boychoir, inc. (msb) was established in 1987 and is devoted to the artistic development of maryland boys. Msb's mission is to provide opportunities for talented boys from all backgrounds to develop their musical and social skills through a rigorous program of instruction and choral performances. Msb also strives to serve the broader community by offering facilities for the arts, children and young people, religious groups (including the congregation of st. Matthew united church of christ, the original owners of the maryland boychoir center for the arts), and local residents particularly the mayfield community.
The forty members of the tour choir toured throughout europe in june 2014, singing in iceland, belgium, the netherlands, and france. The choristers sang in historic locales, cathedrals, and town squares. Several weeks later, the fifty-three members of the concert choir traveled up the east coast into new england and sang 8 concerts. Additionally, during the fall, winter, and spring tours, there were concerts and performances throughout the mid-atlantic region. Through touring, the choristers continue to develop a high level of self-motivated learning and self-discipline while demonstrating maturity and responsibility as performers.
the organization hosted over 140 boys, along with choir directors, teachers and chaperones for a week long summer camp and a three day winter camp. During that time, the boys learned new repertoire for upcoming tours, participated in a number of music and non-music related electives, enjoyed peer-to-peer interaction, learned manners and proper social skills. These two camps focus in giving the choristers the opportunity to learn self-reliance, responsibility, and independence. In the annual ritual known as "summer camp", choristers learn how to put aside "me" and become the remarkable "we" that is the key to the maryland state boychoir.
the organization trained over 140 boys in the demanding art of choral singing through group rehearsals and individualized training and attention. Training includes recognizing note values and music notations with an emphasis that music is a language. The success of the boychoir is due largely to the individualized training and attention given to each chorister. While the staff is well aware of the young age of many of these singers, they expect a sense of professionalism from each boy. Most choirboys respond to these high levels of expectations by performing to the best of their abilities. This individual disire for excellence leads, in turn, to a culture of cooperation and mutual support as the choir strives to produce the best ensemble sound possible.
the organization rents space to outside organizations who are performing services related to their community mission.
