Nonprofit Issues:

Address:

1238 Wisconsin Ave NW, Suite 401 Washington DC 20007 USA

Mission:

Luke's Wings is an organization dedicated to the support of veterans who have been wounded wounded in battle. Recognizing the immediate need for families to be with their loved ones at such a difficult time, Luke's Wings provides families with the means to visit the veterans during their hospitalization and rehabilitation. By purchasing travel agency services and travel tickets for veterans' loved ones, Luke's Wings provides an immediate and invaluable service to the families of our men and women at arms. While individual donations may be made directly through our website www.lukeswings.org, Luke's Wings also encourages corporations to share in our thanks to veterans directly through corporate sponsorship and corporate donations. The organization sponsors and organizes fundraising events in and around the Washington, D.C. area for this purpose, while also raising money for veterans' families by selling t-shirts, stickers, and wrist bands with the company logo. Recognizing the difficulties families encounter as they make their way to their loved ones' side, Luke's Wings is prepared to partner with corporations to ease the burden on families and veterans during their visit. Luke's Wings will purchase plane tickets for a family to travel to the Army Medical Hospital, then Luke's Wings may partner with a hotel and a theme park for free or discounted accommodations, meals, and entertainment.

Results:

Luke's Wings was incorporated in January, 2008. Between January 2008 and December 2010, Luke's Wings raised $211,679 from donations, sponsorships, and (fundraising) ticket sales. With that revenue, Luke's Wings booked 240 airplane tickets to bring loved ones to the bedsides of our wounded warriors currently recovering all over the country. 2011 proved to be a banner year, raising $960,976 and spending more than $123,000 on flights for our wounded warrior families.

Target demographics:

Wounded Warriors, Veterans in Hospice Care & Texas Veterans (Grant)

Direct beneficiaries per year:

Over 1000

Geographic areas served:

National & International, when requested.

Programs:

The Wounded Warrior Transportation Assistance Program (W.W.T.A.P.) - Luke’s Wings flies families in and out of military hospitals, but also flies Wounded Warriors home for Christmas, alive days, birthdays, major life events, or just whenever. This service helps ensure that every Wounded Warrior is supported by their family as they recover. In order to deliver this program, Luke’s Wings has partnered with ten (10) military hospitals across the country, as well as the USO, Red Cross, and United Way. Veterans in Hospice Care Transportation Assistance Program - Luke’s Wings flies families into Hospice Care facilities when a Veteran is ready to pass away. This service helps ensure that every Veteran is always surrounded by loving family and friends during their final days and hours (and is never alone when they pass away). This allows them to say their goodbyes and allows them to reconcile their differences. It is a service we hold very dear to our hearts, as we know we are providing a final salute to the greatest generation that ever lived (our WWII Veterans) and those who should have been treated better all along (our Vietnam Veterans). In order to deliver this program, Luke’s Wings has partnered with the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) and their 300 partners to deliver this offer to over 300,000 veterans currently residing in senior living communities across the country.

Luke's Wings changes lives. Having met dozens of servicemembers and their families that have been provided with care by this organization, I can confidently say that there is a personal touch from the staff at Luke's Wings that simply does not exist in other nonprofits.

Lindsay and Jennifer oversee a top tier organization with minimal, and dedicated, staff. Not only does Luke's Wings provide hundreds of flight per year to needing families - but the organization often reaches out to those in need before they have a chance to make a request. Luke's Wings is a standout example of an organization that provides proactive, not just reactive, care. Because every day, the people who work there are looking for people to help.

I would challenge anyone to describe a nonprofit which has such an extraordinary record of care. And its beneficiaries are the very first ones to sing the praises of Luke's Wings. In my mind, there is no higher statement of an organization's success than one made by someone it has helped.

Luke's Wings goes far above and beyond the call of duty in helping servicemembers and their families. The staff forms personal relationships with them, months and sometimes years after they found them in their time of need.

Servicemembers are asked to potentially give their last full measure of devotion on the battlefield. And nothing less is required of their families. No one understands this better than the staff at Luke's Wings; and they deserve every possible public recognition and honor.

You don't have to ask me if this charity is worthwhile - attend any fundraiser and ask any soldier. Better yet, ask a soldier's parent who was flown in thanks to Luke's Wings. Our soldiers are so strong and brave, and they might not always ask to have their parents by their sides. Enter Luke's Wings. With a simple phone call or email, mom has herself a ticket to Walter Reed to be there. This charity is "technically" a military-based charity, but that's incomplete. This charity serves families, and keeps them together at some of the most difficult times they can face. I'm beyond impressed!!!

I'm so saddened to see bullying on the review page of one of the best organizations that I have ever encountered. What Luke's Wings does for our veterans and their families is so noble, so giving. I had the honor of talking to wounded veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan at a recent fundraiser and they were so appreciative - one even said it made all the difference in his recovery. Luke's Wings is a small non--profit with a small team, and they pour their hearts and souls into helping out veterans and families so that no soldier has to recover alone. The impact that these individuals has made already - and continues to make - is humbling. They are an inspiration to more than those they serve, they set an example for everyone around them. Bravo, Luke's Wings!!

The work that Luke's Wings is doing is priceless!! Not only do the donations help families visit recovering troops, but they're also helping these same wounded warriors get home for Christmas. The core team of staff and volunteers are so compassionate, professional and sympathetic to what these families are going through.
