LUCKY DOG ANIMAL RESCUE
Invite reviews
Lucky Dog Animal Rescue is an exemplary organization and should be used as a model for all animal rescues. I first encountered Lucky Dog when I decided to adopt. They rescue dogs from rural, high-kill shelters and bring them up to the DC area where they are placed in foster homes and then given a chance at a new life. I met my Lucky Dog at one of their adoption events. I was thoroughly examined before they would allow me to adopt - first I had a phone interview, then a home visit, and then those two people had to discuss whether I was approved. The dog I was lucky enough to end up with is named Stella and I couldn't adore her more. I have decided to give back to Lucky Dog by volunteering as a handler at adoption events.

I honestly can't think of anything. They are so well-organized, respond quickly to e-mails, and host adoption events every week!
I came across Lucky Dog Animal Rescue at an adoption event while shopping for dog food at our local Pet Smart. It was inspiring to talk with the volunteers, adoption coordinators, and dog "foster" parents at the event. My life has not been the same since. As a dog lover, I knew that I had to get involved with this organization.
Since that day I have donated financial resources, volunteered my time at events and, most recently, adopted my first Lucky Dog after fostering her for a few weeks. She has brought so much joy to my life, and I can't begin to imagine what would have happened to her had this organization not stepped up to the plate and given her a second chance.
The best thing about Lucky Dog is the people (outside of the rescued dogs of course). They are passionate and believe in rescuing as many dogs as possible from death. Every week they send out an email with the names of the dogs that have been adopted. It is amazing how many dogs have saved to date, and how many families have been touched by this organization.
Right now, given how many organizations are struggling financially , it is important to know which ones get the most out of every dollar that is donated. Lucky Dog is such an organization, and I am proud to support them in every way possible.

seeing the joy brought to adopter's faces as they find the perfect dog to adopt at events. I have also felt the joy of fostering a dog straight from a shelter while the organization worked to find a family to adopt her.

I adopted my dog from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue this past January, a 1-yr old Jack Russell Terrier who was in a high kill, South Carolina Shelter. Lucky Dog put my fiance and me through a thorough (though really painless) adoption screening process that included a vet check, landlord check, and home visit, to ensure this pup being pulled from the shelter was in fact going to a great home. We felt like the lucky ones when we realized immediately what an awesome dog he was and feel so grateful that the work of Lucky Dog saved his life and so greatly improved ours! After realizing the organization is 100% volunteer without a single paid staff, I wanted to get more involved and have since supported adoption events and been a foster parent to three dogs until they found their forever homes. Foster parents are the backbone of Lucky Dog's volunteer network, and they provide the pups with a foster home and help them adjust to home live while volunteer adoption coordinators, another integral component to Lucky Dog's adoption process, screen potential adopters and place dogs into their perfect homes. They also have strong community outreach through local pet supply stores where they do adoption events, trainers and boarding partners who work with their dogs, and local veterinary facilities who provide medical care to the dogs in Lucky Dog's care. Though a very young organization, Lucky Dog has saved over 3,100 dogs in just over two years. They also provide great educational resources to the community about adopting and caring for pets, and work diligently to raise funds to support medical procedures, medicine, and supplies for the lucky dogs. They are a truly fantastic organization with a vast network of volunteers who all play an integral part in saving animals' lives, and I am proud to be a part of this fantastic organization!

being an adopter and supporting the adoption process through my volunteer work. They consistently notify the volunteer base when a dog is adopted and always provide unique, consistent opportunities to volunteer and showcase the dogs up for adoption. More importantly though is how they put the dogs' well-being in the forefront, and ensure they are putting them in the RIGHT homes through their adopter screening process and getting to know the dogs and their needs when they come to the DC area.

Want to create more awareness, but Lucky Dog does a great job utilizing social media and community involvement. One small change I'd like to see is some more adoption events in the southern part of the DC Metro area. We have adopted pretty far south and have a volunteer base in Prince William county (which is where I live), but no events there yet. We go as far north as Towson, so I'd just like to continue extending our reach south. But for being such a young organization, their reach is incredibly broad!
