As a teacher, I understand how valuable a good education is. Literacy Volunteers – Pitt County offers a service that is not only helpful to the community, but vital. Through its programs and volunteer-tutor relationships, the organization has become a saving grace for people seeking a degree, computer literacy, or the skills to simply function better in society. Through television, radio, and social media, Literacy Volunteers has become a growing presence in the area over the past couple of years. Pitt County is a better place because of this organization.

Just over the past year or so, I have watched LIteracy Volunteers of America - Pitt County, increasingly raise public awareness about the crippling effects that adult literacy poses for 14% of adult residents in Pitt County.

I am amazed at how its super small, caring staff has managed to
bring the issue of illiteracy to the forefront of social issues in Pitt County, and has garnered the support of both leading business organizations and educational institutions to sponsor and support their noble cause.

Having done this, they have reached a broader constituent pool of potential donors, students, and volunteers - all of which are crucial to running a successful nonprofit organization.

I fully intend on becoming a Pitt County Literacy Volunteer in 2012. In fact, I would be honored. By helping adults in Pitt County improve their education skills we tap into their unused potential by giving them the talents and skills that directly benefit not only their lives at home and at work, but also our own community's economic and social well-being.

I can't wait to become a part of this wonderful organization!
