Growing up with a sibling with special needs, I often thought how incredibly unfair it was that I had so many opportunities and experiences available to me while my brother did not. It was easy for me to interact with peers like myself, join different social groups, and experience new adventures with friends. My choices seemed to be endless. For those with disabilities like my brother, however, those opportunities are extremely few and far between especially in our area. Lindsey's Place provides an opportunity for people with special needs to get that much needed peer interaction as well as opportunities for a sense of independence and both social and self-growth.

Now as an adult and school psychologist I work with children and young adults with special needs everyday. I can vouch that above everything else what most of the wonderful people I work with desire and need the most is more positive social experiences. Providing these positive social experiences not only gives them an outlet to interact with others in a way that increases their self-confidence and overall well-being but it also provides a powerful teaching environment for them to learn social skills that will help them in their day to day lives. I cannot think of a better cause in this area to help those with special needs.

I helped at rd the very first lindsey's place...it was amazing!!! There is a special love and caring that goes along with or already tight group of friends.I can't wait until april for our second "instalment"! The director, Kara Billingham and her father have poured out there hearts that our participants have a wonderful time.God has a special blessing waiting just for them. I am just happy they gave me a chance to participate.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my day to day job. I work with the special needs already, and the camp gave me a chance to better understand the skills I help them learn to perform daily living skills.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase funding so that a larger amount of people would get to experience it. This would assure a higher councelor to camper ratioand an improved overall flow of the camp.

As a parent of a Special Needs child and a resident of the Southeast, I can certify that camping and bonding experiences for them are few and far between. Lindsay's Place has successfully completed their first weekend camp and has wonderful plans for the next. What an awesome plan to create a permanent facility that can accomodate all the needs for individuals with special needs.
A trainer for my son, a Special Olympic weightlifter, was one of the first counselors for Lindsay's Place. His success and sense of fullfillment was a sight to behold. He plans to continue in that capacity at the next weekend camp.
These weekend camps are just the tip of the iceburg. Only so many campers can be accomodated in a weekend capacity so something much more permanent with the needed equipment is a much desired goal.
Our first fundraiser, in which I served as a volunteer, was a huge success at educating the surrounding areas about the needs of these individuals and we plan more in the future.
This is a lofty goal and we are on our way. Any help would further this and make it happen faster so that special needs individuals will have a chance at some type of "normal" camp like all other kids.
I remember that one of the first campers had never spent any nights away from home, nor had his parents since he was born. He came to camp and his parents came to Savannah and enjoyed the first weekend for themselves since his birth. The camper made lots of new friends and his parents enjoyed each other and the sights of Savannah. How refreshing!!

the success of the fundraiser financially and the exposure to the area about the mission of Lindsay's Place. Seeing the video of the first camp with the campers expressions on their faces.

Words cannot describe how impressed I am with the Lindsey's Place organization. The founders of this non-profit have a passion and continue to push through any obstacle to make this special needs camp a reality for so many people. Lindsey's Place held its first camper session this past Fall with huge success, i.e., the special needs campers had a meaningful experience and look forward to another session. The founder Kara has pursued this organization to only make as many people with disabilities as she can have an enjoyable life experience. I could go on and on. Bottom line...Lindsey's Place has grown out of love and continues to serve because of love.

I met Kara Billingham a few years ago, she was talking about Lindsey's Place and about the camp, about all the beautiful people that share her life. As she spoke I wanted to know more about the camp and all about the children/adults that attend. She spoke with such compassion, full of love for everyone that attended. The gift she and her husband have are very unique and strong. Her children look at these young adults as just people, they don't see the disabilities. How wonderful to raise your children to see such beauty and innocence. So many people in this world see a disabled or mentally disabled person they close their eyes or turn away. Why? don't they want the same things we do? Don't the disabled have that right to have a smile on their face, to have a life???????????? I went to see the Camp this past summer with my husband and I found the facility was beautiful. I saw staff playing, talking, swimming. The care I saw was unbelieveable the quality of care was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw HAPPINESS in each and every client.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kara and her Husband are doing such a wonderful job to give these people a chance to have what we take for granted everyday. I support Kara for Lindsey's Place as much as I can because these kids/adults need to feel whole they need to experience what a normal child /teenager/adult do. Prom night, bingo, swimming,
yoga, music, plays should i go on? This is what i saw at the camp and my heart grew full of admiration. Lindsey's Place will no doubt be the most warmest, loving, well cared facility. Please help them conquer this journey.

We began Lindsey's Place in 2008 with the goal in mind to bring happiness and more fulfilling life to individuals with special needs.

I have worked with the wonderful population of individuals for over 16 years. The passion I have to make a difference comes from the smiles on all the faces
of our campers each year! The staff too!

Lindsey's Place has already made a difference and I am so proud to be a part of it! Please help us get the word out about this very special place. Our campers need YOUR help to succeed in having a special opportunity like this in their life. We all deserve to this Lindsey's Place grow much bigger and reach many more worthy individuals.

We had our first camper weekend retreat in 2010. What a beautiful site to see and be a part of! Our campers came to Savannah, ages 14-30, to enjoy activities and friendships....laughter and fun! In organizing the weekend session, I could not have dreamed a better turn out. We are all so grateful!
