After having followed this group on facebook and e-mailing with them my wife and I made a trip from Syracuse NY to visit them...they were everything they claimed to be. The atmosphere and attitude at Rikki's is amazing it really is all for the animals. We were very impressed!

This animal sanctuary takes animals that most other rescues would euthanize. They take the elderly, and they take the sick. That have the love and patience and knowledge that it takes to heal the animals. The animals are treated as they should be -- as one of God's beautiful creatures.

I've met many wonderful people through Rikki's.
How did this volunteer experience make you feel?
It feels great to know that helping, even just a little bit, can make a big difference to the people and the animals of Rikki's.
Rikki's Refuge is one of the most beautiful places in the state of Virginia!

I like to go out and hug the goats! Nanny is my favorite. I take them Nilla Wafers every time I go.

I wish that there were no more unwanted or abused animals in the world so that Rikki's (and every other animal rescue and shelter) would not be needed.
Ever since I took the mini-tour I fell in complete love with this refuge! Even with all the animals there are, they all find a way to be spoiled and loved. All the employees have a great love for animals and truely make it a great place to volunteer.

I would plant a vegetable garden for the animals, ok then I would have to hire someone to maintain it and keep the goats away :)
Rikki's refuge is unlike any sanctuary I have come across in many years of domestic and international travel. The emphasis it places on all living things, the rally cry that all life is sacred and worth saving is extraordinary. No animal is too old, too sick or too disabled to be treated with kindness and respect, and all efforts are made to provide comfort and a sense of love and belongingness to all who come through the gate. The core values of compassion and humane treatment for all animals are demonstrated in word and action by the Director, Ms. Kerry Hilliard, and all who donate time and energy to this magical place.

..every trip to the Refuge, which is almost every Saturday for tha last 3 years. I have seen miracles happen right before my eyes - an old dog that is given a week or less to live goes on to live well beyond a year; a cat who is given a death senstence of FeLuk lives years beyond what could have ever been expected. I have seen how animal compassion can change the life of a veteran or a teenger.

I would try to increase the revenue and resource stream to ensure no animal would ever be turned away from the gate...
Rikki's is a place where animals with few other options can find a home. They are a life sanctuary for the physically, emotionally and socially challenged animals that need more help than the typical animal refuge can provide.
The volunteers and staff care very much for the animals. I have met some great animal people there, not to mention some great animals. Vincent (spokescat) and Duke (spokesdog) are both handicapped, but don't let their physical circumstances keep them from being absolute charmers. It is a good place.

Seeing how grateful people are when they find a place for their needy animals. For example, Rikki's is rare it that it takes in cats with feline leukemia. Typical shelters would just euthanize them, due to the nature of the illness. Rikki's lets them enjoy the brief time they have and gives their former owners some peace if they're forced to give them up.

Give it a whole lot of money. Being in animal rescue is stressful enough just dealing with people and animals. Try to do it on a shoestring is a road to burnout. Pets need all the supporters they can get and the people who are pet supporters need some breathing room and TLC.

Rikki's Refuge is a blessing to all who live or visit there. Kerry Hilliard, founder and director, is the most unselfish human being that I have ever met - she gives so much and only asks that you help her help the beloved critters at Rikki's Refuge. God bless this wonderful sanctuary and all that make a difference for the ones that cannot speak for themselves.

The Refuge is a refuge to humans also - helping the beloved critters touches your heart and you know that the world is a little nicer and kinder because you helped at Rikki's Refuge.

Win the lotto and give it all to this incredible, wonderful sanctuary for abused, injured and homeless animals. Rikki's Refuge you are a blessing - you make such a difference in this world!!!!
Thank God for the people that support Rikki's Refuge. They take of the animals that people discard because they are too lazy to have their pets spayed/neutered.

Rikkis is truly a santuary for all creatures great and small. You cannot remain unchanged for the better after even one visit to Rikkis. One visit and you'll want to come back to volunteer at this refuge for old, handicapped, sick and dumped animals. Each animal at Rikkis gets medical help, plenty of food, warm dry shelter and LOVE for the rest of their natural lives. There is no other place on Earth like Rikkis Refuge.
