Almost two months ago Rodney and I arrived in Florida looking for a fresh start after our own personal economic collapse in North Carolina. Tired and broke, we ended up at a local shelter where upon check-in at 4 pm daily we were no longer able to acknowledge each other's existence. Men and women are not allowed to communicated with each other. Additionally, each day as we headed out we had to carry all of our belongings with us making our job search difficult at best. After a week, we were becoming very discouraged and frustrated. Then a miracle walked into our lives. Her name is Connie Blaney. She operates several transitional homes for veterans and homeless individuals. We were allowed to be a couple again. To be there for each other, help each other, comfort each other, feel normal again. Even if that were the extent of Connie's involvement it would be amazing enough. But, there is so much more. Connie provides empowerment and encouragement to be all you can. She provides job leads, resources, referrals, respect, comfort, laughter, leisure, safety and much much more expecting only that you apply yourself to be the best you can be based on each individual's own unique capabilities. Individually, I believe in addition to the love, the genuine caring that Connie provides is key. No one else offers that. Rodney now has a wonderful full time job in the profession he loves. I am getting the medical attention I need all while being allowed to be ourselves and be a couple. Thank you Connie! To whom it may concern, I came to Liberty Manor and Connie Blaney on Feb. 06, 2010. I am a Navy veteran and I was just released from the Florida Dept. of Corrections for the second time. In the past 20 years, i have spent 18 of them in the prison system. My first release only lasted 2 short years and my prospects of the second release did not even look that promising, that speaks volumes about Florida's prison rehab. programs. As a vet, I felt like my country abandoned me because of my dis-functions that I incured while in the service. As a so-called "free-person," I felt like a total wash-out and totally distant and unconnected to a society to which I must now try to exist in. In short, Connie was faced with one seriously damaged vet that couldn't find a reason to live. When most people would have run from helping a vet in my situation, Connie didn't even flinch, she stepped up to the plate and faced a challenge head on. In six very short months, she has personally devoted hours and hours of her time, usually at the sacrifice of her own family and limited freedom to give guidance and a sense of hope to a vet that has substance addictions, severe mental health issues and a total lack of respect for authority. What has been the out-come from her efforts is a person that doesn't choose a case of beer as his first solution to his problems, to trust the V.A. mental health doctors to treat his issues in that area and to realize that my hate for all authority is very much mis-placed. She has given me a very real sense of being part of a family at Liberty Manor, and that in itself is totally unbelievable if you knew me and my childhood. Today, I have the responsibility of all of her maintenance needs and I have been blessed with being able to help others in the same shape as me at one of her properties. I honestly can't say that I am a totally productive member of society, yet! But she has done for me what the service or Florida Prison System couldn't do in 24 years of having custody of me. What Connie started out with five years ago was an organization, what she has today is a family of 60 or so of some of the best people this country has and I for one owe her my life, respect, and total gratitude, Thank you Sis! I was impressed with the services provided by Liberty Manor. Liberty Manor offered me the chance to get back on my feet. They helped me with rent assistance, finding a job, provided me food, gave me clothing - ALL OF MY NEEDS WERE MET. If you follow the rules & regs...you will be successful. I suffered through many homeless shelters where you would think one would be better served, but this organization does whsat they say they will do.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... person. They are successful in transitioning veterans.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... that all residents were veterans. In that, there is a certain commaraderie.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... dedicated to the cause.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... benefit veterans seeking to transition successfully that much sooner
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... a private room had been available.
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… I suggest getting them more staff. They are volunteers and though very committed, they have limited time in addition to their own schedules and careers.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... limited number of staff
  • One thing I'd also say is that... if a veteran wants to be successful - then they should turn to Liberty Manor. This was a very pleasant experience, especially during bad circumstances. Liberty Msnor was beautiful

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... I have seen people go from homeless to there own apt and unemployed to employed.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... Being part of it and being to help vets.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Great, they would drive 30 miles just to pic up vet and even more.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... They would be able to get 100,000 vets off the streets.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I had a car.
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… go nation wide.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... money or the lack of it.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... give if you can, if not thank a vet today.
