LaVerne Banks is a woman who cares deeply about educating children who need more help to succeed. She and her husband have gifted the building and much of its contents to underprivileged youth. Their whole family plus volunteers they actively recruit tutor neighborhood kids who need practice to catch up in reading, writing, and math skills. This process is done with kindness and goodwill towards all involved.

I've personally grown from knowing Mrs. Banks, and I think many other people have too.

I would encourage more caring people to volunteer at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin!
In the summer, I volunteered at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin (LTCEA) as a volunteer tutor in areas such as math, reading, writing, and geography. This center is a non-profit organization which provides free tutoring services to children in the East Austin area. The students' genuine desires and passions for learning as well as the dedication of the Banks family were truly inspiring. I really enjoyed working with everyone at the center, and I always felt extremely welcome. The entire experience of volunteering at LTCEA was truly a rewarding experience for me.

witnessing the dedication of the youth. Tutoring was a new experience for me, and working with the children to come up with creative ideas to learn allowed me to grow as well.

perhaps tutor in more subjects (history, the sciences, and foreign languages).
I volunteered at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin in 2009 and return every year for a joyous, stimulating academic environment for our youngsters. As a tutor, my days are filled with reading and sharing the latest books with students or reviewing and proctoring math quizzes. The Center has proven to be a nurturing, warm haven that operates more like a family than a school. Projects and assignments indirectly prepare students for regular classwork and statewide exams. They’re so much fun, though, the students don’t realize they’re sharpening their skills for their next grade level.

...a thousand ways. As a tutor for two consecutive years, I look forward to participating in the daily activities and assignments at the Learning Center. I've seen the joy and excitement on the faces of these students and know the Center is truly making a difference. They make learning fun. While our schools suffer by focusing on "teaching the test," the Center focuses on real learning.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
....tell the rest of the world how great the Center truly is. If I were Rick Perry, I would require every school district in the state to follow the curriculum and philosophy of the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin. The youngsters in the State of Texas would benefit enormously.
